It almost feels like they had a good movie then for some reason realized it didn't have a villain and just jammed Apocalypse in there at the last minute. His scenes feel so unnatural, like they don't belong there. It's very strange. Just a terrible and uninteresting character. All the non-Apocalypse stuff is really good. Fassbender kills it again, despite the shit he has to work with. This movie probably has the best special effects in any recent superhero movie I can remember. Wolverine gets a blatantly shoehorned scene. Its very flashy when it needs to be...as long as it doesn't involve Apocalypse, who still fucking looks like Ivan fucking Ooze. And I just hate Jennifer Lawrence. But Apocalypse kind of took all the heat here. She seemed better in comparison so she didn't bother me as much as I assumed she would. I also liked all the casting. I liked Sansa, Olivia Munn and whoever the new Storm is. Everyone else is fine as well. Nothing to be upset about. I don't regret seeing it, but it could have been so much more. Maybe as a two parter. There wasn't any time to get invested in anything here. I just did not give a fuck. The writing is just...blech. I swear the movie will give you a mild case of anxiety because's always something to be nervous about. There's a nice moment in the middle where everything is going well at least. Obviously it's a Suspense/Thriller, but typically these movies focus on one thing and go with it. Maybe because there are only three main characters and like 1.5 side characters, that's why they had to keep mixing up the focus. The actors were great in their roles and the bunker was a nice little setup. Everything else I have to talk about in spoilers. Reveal hidden contents Could we have gotten to the alien aspect quicker? I'm sure a lot of people were expecting this to still be a sequel to Cloverfield. Instead, it gets tacked on at the last 7 minutes as "and then" material. Michelle can't catch a break in the last damn 30 minutes. There's absolutely no cooldown. Between having to escape, watching Emmett get shot, escaping from Howard, and then taking on a giant alien tentacle ship. I get the ending is suppose to show Michelle changing from someone who runs away to someone who confronts challenges, but it feels sudden given all the drama and stress that occurred in that single evening. Normally I'd agree with you, but I genuinely think Civil War is the least run of the mill movie Marvel has put out in years. Story is kind of a mess and a bit feel goody but the fights are pretty good. A bit too much of Ong Bak in the Tony Jaa's parts though. deanb Posted July 29, 2016 Report Share Posted July 29, 2016 The Killing Joke It wasn't as bad as the poor trailer animation and the news of a new sequence having batgirl n batman in a relationship would make it out to be but it could have been better. The animation actually was pretty good for the most part, I think it might have spoiled it somewhat if it was BTAS style animation, which was much more cartoony and this is a far from cartoony batman story. However the batgirl <3 Batman arc they added in is a decent 1/3 of the whole thing and really drags itself out compared to the actual Killing Joke part. I think they'd have done better to have all that stuff removed, maybe just a montage of her n batman doing cases or something to set it up as being "she's batgirl not just Jims daughter", certainly no need to have awkward relationship troubles thrown in. Would have allowed them to flesh out the Killing Joke part some more, it goes by so fast otherwise. And while it's the same end as Killing Joke it feels like a weird place to end the film. Especially given how they'd changed the start of the film. There's no resolution to the Batgirl side of things in her becoming Oracle. Instead they build up this relationship then it's like "welp she's a cripple now, lets leave her in the hospital n have Batman and Joker having a laugh. Roll credits". Anywho, watch Batman: The Animated Series if you haven't. Brilliant cartoon, brilliant super hero series, brilliant VA, animation, all sorts. It's great. I guess I didn't have an emotional connection to the nu-Trek Enterprise enough that its destruction had any emotional effect on me. It was better than Into Darkness, but it seemed like a long, FX-heavy episode of TNG or DS9 more than an epic movie. It had some nice moments, but ultimately I couldn't shake the feeling that we didn't need this movie. Dory herself is a fun character, but I don't want her as the main protagonist and whilst it might keep the kids entertained I'm not sure it places high on my PIXAR ranking. Rocky Horror Picture Show Not a massive lover of musicals, but I enjoyed this much more on the second attempt. Song's are fun, and the film's got its own sense of style. It's still a musical. The dialogue is trash, the editing janky, the sound is just horrendous. But it's a solid standalone story and something a bit unique (That got beaten into the ground ages later). Also rocking Queen soundtrack. Even makes it fit in 17th Century Scotland. Wasn't expecting much, got 2 star off Empire, hadn't seen any trailers except snippets playing off their phone. Wasn't overly terrible, I think could have been "good" if it had polish and maybe got rid of the pigeon character. The wolf pack was fun though, they start forming a bridge, in much the way you expect of climbing on top of each other to then fall across the chasm, instead they build a suspension bridge, and this sorta continues throughout the film. Some of the lines from the kid were pretty fun too. Reveal hidden contents So after Tulip is born and undelivered the storks stop and become sort of Amazon. Which means for 18 years kids aren't being delivered which must create some Children of Men type scenario. (though I guess au naturale works given the knowing looks between the policeman and parents, and given their son is like 10 or whatever). What it does better than its predecessor is put the turtles as the stars right away (and tweak their terrible design a little). There's still some April and Casey Jones bullshit, but the turtles are a little more prominent (they get a sort of arc!) However, there is so much dumb shit going on that it makes my brain want to shrivel up, like just contemplating people writing that Bebop and Rocksteady (who's fucking "OIRISH") transform into those specific animals because the ooze unlocks... something to do with their ancestry and animals. What the fu... Oh, yeah, Bebop & Rocksteady. They're fun at times but a constant reminder that this really is a live-action cartoon. There's so much bad stuff but it zips along without troubling your brain cells too much and there's some good action and a couple of decent gags; my favourite being one at the end. deanb Posted November 20, 2016 Report Share Posted November 20, 2016 ID4:2 I went in expecting a proper terrible movie but I'd say apart from the usual tropes of a last minute saving n "oh no the school bus full of children!" stuff it was pretty fine. Few shaky bits of acting (especially around deaths, though Data makes up for it) and you get kinda distracted by not-will smith and not-thor. Few minor plot issues such as the fact we have developed space faring fighter planes and tug boats but the cars still run off petrol 20 years down the line. But it's got flashy pew-pews n plenty alien fighters n shit. I kinda like the "white orb" plot line others have hated on, sets up for a sequel though falls into the trope of "humans are the best in space" trope. Oddly, I found the movie to be predictable. Once you realize who the characters are, it mostly comes down to seeing how they'll interact with each other. Warren is a clever liar which he had to become to survive as a black man post-Civil War. It's his form of interrogation as the other character he begins questioning don't know how to out lie him because he has the upper hand. Now that was something that bugged me later on. Warren was almost always in an advantageous spot, never doubting or making a mistake. The one time he is weak is... Reveal hidden contents when his junk get shot off by a new character. Great twist and a little poetic after his story of having the General's son suck his big black dingus. I found John Ruth to be a good character because he was cautious, but at the same time gullible. He didn't want to trust anyone, but he still ended up getting fooled. Chris Mannix was alright too in that we're not sure if he's really the sheriff of Red Rock because he's overall a dick, but he does have his moments where he makes the movie entertaining. The rest of the cast I feel I would need to put all in spoilers as their character is all central to the overall plot. The problem I have with them is that they felt more like set pieces than actual characters. Reveal hidden contents Ironically that's what they actually were from the start. I can appreciate that in the end the whole thing was a giant farce, like how you look at Minnie's business not actually being what it's called. It's not deeply metaphorical so I wouldn't go on raving about it like it needs to be in a college textbook 30 years from now. Truth be told, I feel that some of the things the movie gets praised for actually end up hurting it just a bit. Like when we learn the truth of events halfway through the movie. Great stuff, if not for some editing mistakes. You have to go back and realize, "Oh wait, that stuff from 10 minutes ago is actually like this now!" Normally I love plot progression like that, but it didn't always fit the character. That's the problem when you've got liars in the mix; they tend to get screwy with your plot. One last spoiler and that's about it. Really I just felt the movie should have taken a bit of a different direction halfway through the film. Reveal hidden contents Channing Tatum's character, Jody Domergue, felt wasted. We eventually learn he's a gang leader, but even before that he was this smart and smooth character who had this all planned out. He goes out by being disarmed and shot in the back of the head. "Durr har har har! Daisy's brother's blood all over her face! Screw her!" say the fans. I'm sorry, but it would have been better for Daisy to have died and the story to continue with Jody. Just imagine, Daisy dies right in front of Jody and the plan fails right there. So Jody goes on about his gang and some of the same dialogue as Daisy did. It's more believable that there's 15 men in Red Rock, but that adds to the suspense. Jody and his gang all get shot and Warren and Chris bleed out. Yeah, because while the hanging of Daisy is "symbolic," I couldn't believe two guys soaked in their own blood having the strength to hang Daisy. But we gotta honor John and do as he says in his Tarantino quote. P.S. I was kinda expecting Bob to really have been a worker for Minnie. This goes back to be complaint that Warren was just too good as figuring things out. Like he knows there's multiple people involved, but he ends up killing the only innocent one while the others retaliate. Obviously that doesn't work in the grand scheme of things.
