Last OK Movie You Saw

Dark Skies.

My friend invited me over to watch it last night. Didn't really feel like going but I was bored so I figured what the hell.

Basically a cookie-cutter horror film only with Grays instead of [insert random monster here]. If you've seen the trailer, you can probably predict ever single story beat. I kinda wanna say it's shit but I tend to get some level of enjoyment out of these movies so it goes here.

If you find uninspired horror films to be dumb fun, might want to give it a shot. Otherwise, don't bother.

Title-wise yes Olympus has Fallen is a better title. But that movie was a bit too gritty serious while this one is serious but has that entertaining aspect that slips in a joke every now and again. I gotta give it to the director he may not make good reviewed movies but he sure makes entertaining ones.

But just like with Lady in Black with Harry Potter I had the hardest time seeing Channing Tatum as the father of anything older than 4-5 years olds. His baby-face and great good looks just makes it impossible to see him as a dad. I'd say facial hair would be the biggest help to give him an air of maturity.

Crossfire.

Decent noir with some cool lighting and direction, if a little blunt and long-winded, being that it has a side bit that is almost completely irrelevant. The box says it is 'the movie that supposedly set Washington on to liberal Hollywood, ending with the anti-communist McCarthy witchhunt', which is kinda sad since there's nothing suspicious about not being an ignorant, racist jerk. Though, like I said, the film is rather blunt with its message, even if it does feature a mighty fine speech about immigration and racism and what it means to be American.

You certainly are on a noir kick lately, aren't you?

Heh, well, yeah. It's because of this (note the leet post number), which was highly recommended, that I've got a bunch of film noirs. I do have other films to watch, but then I see that most are around two and half hours long and think, "Ehh, maybe another night..." Whereas I look at this collection and see most are around an hour and a half.

So, expect another 4 to follow at some point. :P

Red 2

Like its predecessor, it's a movie that largely relies on its actors' charm and the humorous conversations between them. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily, but it's not a good thing either. It's largely forgettable. Let's be 100% honest here, anybody who watched Red remembers nothing of what happened in the first one besides maybe a character no longer being there.

And this one is no different. It's the definition of extremely forgettable film. You'll be entertained and chuckle while watching it, but it's like cotton candy or chips. You'll enjoy them while eating it but you don't think about them after a couple of hours.

White House Down.

I'm not gonna lie this is basically Die Hard with Channing Tatum. But it's thoroughly enjoyable.

Presumably this is a sequel to Black Hawk Down, where the Somali Militia scrapes together all their pennies to buy a couple of pedalos and raid the White House while the heroic government makes a brave stand while using their billions and billions of dollars to eventually drag themselves to a pitiful stalemate.

The Wolverine.

I had low expectations going in and it met them. Tries to be a little too serious...features a mecha-samurai. Film is far too long for what it is and the story is a little all over the place. That said, the action is fairly good and the setting is a nice change.

Oh, and I didn't really care for the credits scene because I'm still skeptical about Bryan Singer behind the camera again.

Gangster Squad.

The movie is completely stuffed to the brim with 1940's clichés but to me that was actually part of its charm. Was it well written? From an objective viewpoint, probably not so much. Did I enjoy watching it? You bet.

Life of Brian. It's been forever since I've seen a Monty Python film so I'm unsure if I just wasn't getting it fully or what. Anyways, it had some funny moments, and I understand for its time was very controversial for the way it satirized religion. Some gags went on too long that just seem outdated but speech impediments and shit like that are probably worn out because of these guys in the first place. Overall I enjoyed it but I am in no rush to see it again. I also found it kind of annoying that everyone is SHOUTING throughout most of the movie since basically every single escalates to an argument and they play it up big time.

Tried to watch it a few years ago, my opinion was about the same. Nothing to write home about. In fact I think I fell asleep at one point.

I agree with FDS. Funny, but not brilliant. Although I bought the film when the local Blockbuster went out by my place. I was a huge fan of the Holy Grail in my younger days and I would say my interest in humor has gotten more sophisticated, but I still laugh my ass off to that movie.

Confidence.

First time i'd heard of this movie (not surprising). It stars Ed Burns, Dustin Hoffman, Andy Garcia and Rachel Weisz and is totally forgettable. It tries to be cool but misses the mark by a country mile. I like Burns but i'm not sure he's quite cool enough to pull this off. Weisz, Garcia and Giamatti are criminally underused and Hoffman is..well awfully cast.

Should you all want to revive your love of Monty Python, go see Spamalot.  It's a hoot!

I saw Spamalot, I enjoyed the play, but my theater experience was not what I expected. I was in NY 6 or so years ago visiting my brother and we decided to go see it. He tells me "we should buy 'standing room only' tickets, it means that you wait until the theater stops allowing people inside and you get seated in the empty seats." He was wrong. It meant that you get a little half wall with a cushion on top to rest on and stand in the back of the theater, which had a balcony so I had to really lean down to see God in the play. Still a good play to see.
