Last OK Movie You Saw

This is where I'll put my viewing of the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

I'm a fan of Geoffery Rush, and it seemed like he was having fun with the role, but something about his performance bothered me in this one. He did this thing with his eyes every time he appeared on screen where he would bug them out for a good, long time, and then they would be almost shut in an airtight squint.

And this is the last great appearance of Captain Jack Sparrow...

I just watched La Regle du Jeu, which is supposed to be one of the greatest films ever made. I must be decidedly uncultured as I found it quite ridiculous and the actors shrill and OTT. Not quite sure what I wasn't getting about it.

TL;DR Missionary and mermaid strike up completely unrealistic impromptu romance that doesn't go anywhere and only ends... well, maybe once you see it you'll know what I mean.

In the background at the beginning of the credits you can see the silhouette of two mermaids swimming away. I took this to mean that the missionary was turned into a mermaid.

Pirates of the Caribbean 4.

I'd almost put this in the crap thread but it was OK. I was actually quite bored during some of the action scenes and the Jack Sparrow stuff wasn't always funny but it had its moments.

It's funny how divorced the cleric and mermaid story was from the 'main' characters, since it barely featured at all. Can't say I'd complain about that, even though the actors were clearly better than Knightly and Bloom.

Probably Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It was definitely not as good as the first, but better than the third. I'm glad they tried to reinvent a little bit, but there were just some things that were obvious like replacing Orlando Bloom (with lean, blonde hottie) and Keira Knightley (mermaid), chase scenes, etc. Although I did enjoy the dynamic between Johnny and Penelope's characters, especially at the end of the film. To be honest, I wasn't expecting it to end so abruptly and in your face (or hers, rather). And of course, it was great to see Barbossa again.

Bottom line, it wasn't brilliant, by any means, but it was sorta fun.

This is where I'll put my viewing of Green Lantern. It rises just enough to not be in the Crap Movie thread.

I'm familiar with Green Lantern lore, and the movie doesn't really do any injustice to the comics, it's just how everything is handled is the problem. Personally, there were many times I couldn't stand Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. He's a funny guy, and therein lies part of the problem. It's not so much Hal Jordan is making a joke, it's that somehow everything around him has to be a joke.

I can only assume that those behind the script couldn't tie everything together, so instead they make a joke to lead into the next scene. Even then, there's an issue with editing. There's the scene where Hal Jordan is being taken to Oa, the Green Lantern Corps. headquarters, yet at the same time you're shown Hector being infected by Parallax. It ruins the wonder of Hal Jordan's scene with that of some creeper moaning in his bed.

There wasn't as much epic adventure as there was, "I'm not responsible and I have fear; why did the ring choose me?!" Upon running with that for 50 minutes, the female interest tells him the obvious, "You have the ability to overcome fear."

And excuse me, but how they dispatch of

Parallax, it makes me wonder if there is any intelligence in the Green Lantern Corps. if our "measly little" sun could destroy the Fear Entity. So yeah, I'm not sure if the Sinestro Corps. will be formed as Sinestro himself was like, "Hmm, Hal Jordan proved himself and the Green Lanterns." There still is a yellow ring, but I can't see a good sequel either.

You know, and I have one problem with DC comic movies now: they don't connect. What I mean is look at the Marvel movies. There's always a reference or such that indicates, yes, there are other heroes and that everyone is aware of other events in other films. You hear that Hal Jordan's nephew is having a Superman birthday party, but that's about it.

It's no wonder they'll have to reboot previous movies if there is going to be a Justice League film.

EDIT: Oh, almost forgot: I didn't really care for the "Green Lantern vs. The Elephant Man" scuffle in the middle of the movie. -_-

Spider-Man

It has not aged well at all. The slapstick elements, the really bad digital Spiderman (which for some reason they use even in parts that wires would have worked fine), the weird all over the place-ness. It wasn't too well paced. It felt like filler in order to then get everyone up to speed and in t he right places. Which given I'm now on Spider-Man 2 and it starts with snapshots from the first film.

Tobey McGuire is not a great actor. I think that kinda drags it down. The support is all very good though.

Also Cave Johnson. Man he was made for the role. It was hard to watch that parts he was in without thinking of lemons.

Saw Cars 2 last night (Friday) and it's better than I expected, but it's still a mediocre film. I'm seeing people in denial, and those who absolutely hate it, but the general consensus is that Pixar's "25 Years of Excellence" has been ruined.

Basically, the film is good and I think everyone should still see it. After all, you want to be able to say you saw history, right? I mean, it looks fantastic and everything that can be classified as "spectacle" is high quality. It when you get to the story that you are immediately let down. I knew something was wrong when Roger Ebert gave away the tells of a mediocre film like "nostalgia" and "no plot, but fun."

To summarize and to keep this short, there is no substance and there is too much work being put in to have a spy story and have a character study of Mater. Yeah, like I want all of this for nearly two hours. If they just stuck to having a Grand Prix plot, it would have been a really good film. I hear the reason why Cars 2 even exists is because of the worldwide marketing campaign for the first Cars gave inspiration to have a more "open, international" world to Cars.

So yeah, while I say this is a good film, it's like a good Dreamworks film, i.e. Megamind.

I guess it was going to happen sooner or later. -_-

C'mon its easy to sell cars merchandise. Just think of it hot wheels lite (which in itself is matchbox lite which is in turn lite versions of more expensive hobby cars).

Cars toys and merch will mostly sell a lot more than the others since the toys and such are easier in terms of a traditional sale. I am curious how Pixar will merch out Brave (outside of figures and activity books) since it looks like it wouldn't have many merch opportunities.

Cars was always one of their lowest rated but most profitable films. There's always Cars related toys out for sale. Finding Nemo? Monsters Inc? Ratatouille? Nope.

Not in the specifics of merchandise, but there will be a Monsters Inc prequel titled "Monsters University" coming 2013.

I think there are a few Pixar films that have high merchandising potential. Toy Story itself is merchandise come to life, but like WTF said, Cars is the easiest. Something like Incredibles 2 would require action figures with each character featuring unique mechanisms.

Cars is cars, and cars are cars. I know they've done some weird things with the cars, like wrestling, but it's still plastic with four wheels. -_-

Cars is a fucking advertisement. How that shit got a sequel, and stuff like A Bug's Life, Wall-E, and Finding Nemo never got one pisses me off.

Pixar. You used to be at 98% good (Incredibles and Cars fault you), but now you're just 97% good!

Wat. Incredibles was amazing. How dare you >:|

That's actually very nice to know. Monsters Inc is my favorite Pixar movie and I REALLY don't want them to pull another Cars 2 with it. Making it a prequel set in a university actually makes for a nice premise. Once the premise is there I'm more confident in Pixar's ability to turn it into a good film.

Incredibles is my favorite Pixar film.

I don't like the idea of Pixar selling out with Cars 2. Don't kid yourselves, that's the reason this movie exists, period. That's how the world works sometimes, though. The thought that comforts me is that they can use all the stupid merch money from Cars to invest in more meaningful projects like Wall-E and Up.

Yeah, I don't think a lot of people are fooled by the intention behind Cars 2.

I guess if they had to sell out, they did it with the most profitable sellout under their disposal. Kids will still get a kick out of the film, but it's (to me) the first Pixar film where it feels awkward to view sans family/children. I saw a few dates take place, but again, this (to me) is the first Pixar film where a date feels inappropriate.
