I thought the season ending wasn't too bad. It wrapped it up pretty well, came fuck all close.. like plastic sheet thin close. ;)

I would have preferred Lumen stick around, but we all knew it wouldn't happen. That's the problem with the season long guest stars, especially with an actress like Julia Stiles. Despite opinions on her, she's a fairly known movie star, so I wasn't expecting her to stick around. (although showtime is getting William H fucking Macy on his own show...)

Sure it didn't end on a high emotional point like Season 4, but 4 was an outlier in that regard.

With Lumen's darkness "leaving" at the end, I'm wondering if maybe the show will attempt to go full circle and Dexter delves more into his so called creation with the goal of getting rid of his dark passenger as well.

So now that it's just like any other show you think it's better? Besides the beginning of the season (the very first episode in fact) I felt like this was your typical premium TV show and nothing more. The end of the season only reinforced that. The reason that Dexter is so likable is because he is unlikable. He's a monster. That's what made it interesting. The same can be said for the other characters. Their faults make them interesting. Now that everyone is okay with everyone elses faults and everyone is all loving dovey... it's just too easy. Also, you can think of a kill like the photographer for every season but the first, really. Season 5 had the guy in the bathroom, for example.

I see what you mean, but still have to disagree. The bathroom murder (albeit not part of the code) was necessary for Dexter to evolve as a character. To move beyond the grieving period of his wife and try to get back into a routine. I also don't think that Dexter is likable because he is unlikeable. Dexter is likable because you kind of understand his plight. He was so severely scarred at such a young age that he has these horrible desires now. That's not why we like him, though. We like him because he always tries to do what's right, in spite of his inner demons.

In season two, Dexter went into full douchebag mode by cheating on Rita, and pretty much saying "Fuck you!" to everyone who cared about him. That was Dexter being unlikeable.

I stand by my analysis of season five. It wasn't the flashiest or the most intense, but it absolutely did what was necessary to move Dexter out of the mess that season 4 left, while still allowing room for the characters to grow.
