Some of you may already have seen it on Facebook but, last week, we had to have our cat put down. Having not been there for the process before (we've had a few cats reach old age), it's a sad thing to witness.

She was nearly 18 and had gone downhill pretty quickly. She'd had something funny with one of her legs for a while (we suspected arthritis but vets couldn't identify it and in retrospect it might have been related to balance and hearing loss?) and had lost her hearing sometime last year but was otherwise fairly perky. Then in February, she'd stopped drinking and eating for a couple of days. A trip to the vets and some IV stuff during an overnight stay and she seemed to recover, although no real cause could be found. She'd been on and off different types of food for a couple of weeks, then last week she'd stopped eating and drinking (even from the taps, which she always enjoyed) as well as showing breathing problems and what seemed like an inability to find a comfortable position for resting. She'd also stopped purring and seemed generally lethargic (moreso than cats are usually...) She'd started to get a growth in her abdomen as well as the one they get in their mouths, which is basically the tumour that all old cats get so we took the decision not to prolong her suffering.

It's still kind of upsetting as we'd had her over half my life and she became very much "my cat". And since I work with my dad and join my parents for dinners (I'm usually the one cooking it) it's strange not to see her waiting in the hallway and loudly meowing upon seeing me, or running out into the driveway, or finding her upstairs and greeting her like so.

Sally, our family dog, passed away March 7th, 2018 around 9:00 AM MST. I was getting ready for my part-time job when my father walked up to me with the news after having the vet office call him.

This was half an hour after visiting her and under the belief that she was getting better. From the prior days, she was more alert and was happy to see us once again visit her. The family would visit once in the morning, and once in the afternoon each day while she was at the vet. We even left her one of her favorite toys and I was happy to know she was getting her fluids. She had suffered from hemorrhaging in her liver from liver cysts. Normally, older dogs do development these, but rarely do they ever rupture. We don't know if was her medication for her other cancer she was recovering from, or if some kind of physical trauma caused the rupture.

She was only 11 years-old, and I miss her with every ounce of my being.

We've rescued a Romanian girl who is currently nameless which is getting a bit frustrating but nothing seems to stick. She's a nervous little girl but changed so much in just the week we've had her. A long way to go as she's 4 and never lived in a home and not been treated great so doesn't understand how to live in a home or how to interact with humans that want her around.

edit: She's called Ada. When we told the lady who runs the rescue she said that was the name of her first rescue dog from Croatia which is why she decided to set up her own charity to rescue the Romanian dogs so that was nice and helped us feel it's the right name.

During lockdown we've been looking after  housemates mam's older Yorkshire terrier (we'd been dogsitting once a week to give her a rest from the other younger dogs she lives with. During lockdown she's kinda just ended up with us full time). Kinda realising, especially on the days when I'm only one in WfH, that I probably want to get a pet when I'm in new place. Not sure what type of pet mind. Something to research during lockdown.
