Dead Island

Sense of humor? I don't think the Dead Island trailer was suppose to have humor, right? :P

I can get where he's coming from, but he is still uptight. For me, I'm not a parent, but I'm very sensitive about little girls. Little boys? Nah, a school bus of rowdy male youngsters could blow up in a video game, and I might say, "Dang, that sucks."

BioShock is a great example. I've never harvested a Little Sister, especially in BioShock 2. To me, the Little Sisters looked to me as a protector, someone who they could confide in when in a fallen utopia of deranged mutants. You could say, "Uh, it's just a video game," but we also make that argument that video games go beyond basic entertainment. That they have the artistic quality to touch you emotionally and provide food for thought.

Still, I watched the Dead Island trailer in full. While I'm sensitive about little girls, I also appreciate it when any media throws out the Infant Immortality trope. I still remember the Yu Yu Hakusho episode where Kurama explained how children view themselves as immortal as they believe no harm will ever fall upon them. This was right before he was going to win some match against a child who claimed to be the Goblin King or something. By the rules of the game, the loser would die and so the child did die.

Executive 1: 'Hey check out this new game it's been getting a lot of attention, maybe we should buy the rights?'

Executive 2: 'Interesting, what's the premise?'

Executive 1: 'Oh it's just generic zombie fare and the only novelty is a game-play mechanic that in no way translates to a cinema screen. In fact it's a standard feature of pretty much every zombie film ever made.'

Executive 2: 'But you said it's popular right?'

Executive 1: 'Oh sure everyone's talking about it.'

Executive 2: 'Well the stupid masses will go see anything if we pump enough money into advertising, let's buy it.'

Both: Evil laughter

How about the opening episode of the Walking Dead where Rick puts a bullet in the little zombie girl's head.

She's also holding a teddy bear. That's in the first few minutes.

That was also very emotional. And that was actors, not a video game.

If people get upset about this trailer then, like usual, they're just making a fuss for attention.

Oh I also watched the trailer with some large expectations as Kenshi had gone on in Steam chat about how it had great facial work, better than Heavy Rain.

I didn't go in expecting a pre-rendered trailer....

Heyyyy, I didn't say anything like that. I: a.) don't have you on Steam chat, b.) have never spoken to you about Heavy Rain, and c.) don't think the facial animation in the trailer is good at all. Pre-rendered, too, natch.

One time I did tell you how I think the facial animation in L.A. Noire is amazing though, even though the models and textures suck pretty bad.

I thought this trailer was extremely well edited and conceptualised. It's blatantly not indicative of the game itself- however as someone stated on Kotaku I believe, the fact that Techland are taking this emotional approach to the situation is indicative of them and what kind of experience they could pull off if they applied this stylistic quality to the game as a whole. We'll have to see how it goes.

Dead State sounds awesome. I'm playing through Dead Rising 2 right now, too, it's totally sweet.

EDIT: From that Demonoid preview: "Imagine Borderlands set on the Just Cause 2 island with the Left 4 Dead style of zombies, featuring a quest system similar to Fallout 3 and the weapons system of Dead Rising 2. "

Doesn't sound at all emotional. Oh well, it does actually sound good. Apparently it's going for Braindead zombies- you can cut all their limbs off and they'll still lie there flopping about screaming at you.

edit: I'm actually talking about someone completely different now that I look.

Fucking weird names. Why is everyone using weird names. At least it's not in Korean.

Haha no worries man. I've actually been wanting to change my name for years, but I use it on so many sites/games/services that it'd be insane amounts of bother to change it, and old online friends would have no idea who I am.

Looks like someone already posted a Kotaku link above, but NHS was where I read about the film options.

This is good news for Dead Island's marketing team, and good news for the whole development team, as this will almost certainly increase sales, but does the acquisition of film rights, or the additional mind share this game is getting translate into a larger team or budget for this game?

I'm hoping this game is good...co-op, creative trailer, open world zombie game...it sounds like it could be great...but for as little as we know and as much hype as the trailer seems to have gotten, there could be a lot of disappointed people when this game comes out.

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/19/dead-island-movie-rights/

Update: Dead Island publisher Deep Silver states that, contrary to earlier reports, the rights to a film adaptation of Dead Island have not been sold -- though it claims to have received "a vast amount of inquiries" following the game's buzz-building trailer.

"We are looking for quality above all else for a movie based on Dead Island," says Klemens Kundratitz, CEO of Koch Media (parent company of Deep Silver). "We want to do it the right way as film realizations of games (or vice versa) usually fail to deliver what the fans were looking for." The goal, according to Kundratitz, is to "work with someone who already has a proven track record with blockbuster movies." That doesn't necessarily rule out Union Entertainment, which was rumored to have already purchased the rights, but it sounds like the IP-holder is still evaluating all potential silver-screen suitors.

I think they're both pretty good, and I can see why they'd want to avoid people reading some kind of racial subtext into an apparently lynched figure (even if the likelihood of this happening is pretty low, we all know how people will seize on the stupidest things if it allows them to slander video-games). The black background works to re-establish some of the menace lost by replacing the hanged figure.

I think they're both really good as well. In fact, I might favor the altered logo because it at least establishes that there are zombies, rather than dead bodies. You have to think of the gamers that don't stay up-to-date with gaming news, blogs, and etc.

I mean, I know what Dead Island is thanks to all the crazy hype from the trailer and premise.

Don't be silly, that man was clearly hanged for being a pirate, and if we take the P from pirate and the N from the noose that he was hanged with then we get Dead PNIsland or Dead Penis Land which tells us this film will be a piece of feminist propaganda where the zombies' constant lust for flesh is an allegory for men's wanton sexuality.

Or that's what I see anyway.
