TheMightyEthan
I'm pretty excited about this game. Hope it turns out well.
Kovach_
Yeah, i'm pretty excited about it myself, but i'd like to know SOMETHING about the game other than the fact that you kill zombies.
TheMightyEthan
I feel like I used to know things, and those things excited me. I've since forgotten those things though, so I can't enlighten you.
deanb
RPS comment guy puts it well. One minute I hear you can play a rapper and use an electrified machete, the next minute they’re pushing an emotional narrative. I don’t want to be too judging before we really see anything, but I can’t see those two things gelling, and I know which one’s going to fall by the wayside (emotional narrative) and I know which one I don’t want to fall by the wayside (emotional narrative). http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/05/17/the-moving-dead-dead-island-trailer/
Thursday Next
Prefer the hanged man. The zombie makes me think "This is an island full of zombies that I'm going to slaughter." the hanged man makes me think that this game will have some intelligent comment on the impact of the events on the islands residents. It's like comparing Zombieland and The Walking Dead. There are plenty of Zombieland games out there. Dead Rising in particular. There aren't any The Walking Dead games (at least not to my knowledge). TheMightyEthan
I prefer the hanged man too, but I understand why the US's special history might make them avoid that here.
Thursday Next
I prefer the hanged man too, but I understand why the US's special history might make them avoid that here. We used to hang people all the time in the UK. Of course that was for sensible things like being armed, in a park, with a blacked face, as opposed to being born black and walking in a park with linked arms... Seriously, the blacked face thing is true. http://www.exclassics.com/newgate/ng169.htm Joking aside, I do get that America is uncomfortable with certain aspects of her past, and after the Resi 5 thing, discretion is probably quite wise. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, and I think it wouldn't be quite so big a deal if the past would stay in the past, but there are still plenty of racist people around, and the noose is still used as a symbol (like hanging a noose from a tree in a black family's yard). SomTervo
Kotaku just did a pretty good article on it. I don't agree with this. They aren't pushing an emotional narrative (he's basically right but is hoping there will be one, which there won't). That trailer sure was emotional, but if you read any previews or interviews, unanimously the developers are saying that it's an action game with unemotional gameplay- although there will be emotional backstories and situations surrounding where you go and the people (living or dead) you encounter. It's basically a combination of Oblivion/Fallout 3's quest and open world system, Left 4 Dead's co-op and action (with bigger focus on close combat), and Dead Rising's weapon combination and vehicle system. It also has the RPG'ish elements of Oblivion and Dead Rising. Sounds pretty fucking good if you ask me. So you get quests from people, are free to go anywhere, weapons break easily and can be combined, at first your person is pretty unskilled with items but you can level them up to get better. The vehicles sound extremely fun- but break a lot, like in Dead Rising. Which, tbh is fine, as IRL a car wouldn't be able to run many people over at high speed before it's pretty busted. SomTervo
Sorry for DP: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/714102.html 10 minutes of footage. Looks very odd. Cartoony, strange interface. But still looks like it would be good fun- this vid's odd as it's not 10 consistently played minutes of the game, but a pretty chopped up sequence of gameplay footy that leads you through a while of gameplay. Kovach_
This was what i was looking for. Good one kenshi. So, it's like Dead Rising 2 just way more open and without a time limit. Well, i hope it's w/o a time limit, unless that storm comes faster than i can do sidequests XD I like the fact that you're playing a random woman instead of a buff ex-marine bald dude or some shit like that. I dislike the lack of zombie children. I thought the game would be full co-op (aka L4D), glad i was wrong. Can't wait to see more of this on E3. Connorrrr
I was pretty impressed with the gameplay video, it looks like it could be a lot of fun and not as mindless as most zombie games where you can just get by shooting everything and smacking whatever runs at you without having to worry about becoming fatigued. I will continue to be interested in this game :
Thursday Next
I'm interested. Not sure where I'm going to find time for this though. Looks like a fun RPG, I assume the survivors are all immune to zombification, otherwise I'll be a bit annoyed if they do a "person got bit but didn't tell anyone" thing. The only problem I have with this as a game concept is if I can lop off zombie limbs at will then it's a bit annoying when zombie bosses somehow have heads arms and legs that are harder to remove than mooks. Zombies should be a "strength in numbers" sort of foe not a 12 health bar boss thing.
Pirandello
Dead Island Gameplay Trailer I gotta say, it doesn't look bad. Edited May 23, 2011 by Pirandello

Pirandello
Did you miss Kenshi's second post? Yeah, just realized that. My bad. I like how equipment names are Diablo/Torchlight-style. "Powerless Knife of Concussion."
SomTervo
Heheh, I'd trust GT more as a video source anyway, Piran Also I can't wait to put my 'Ancient Carribean Gem of Slaughter' into my 'MLB Baseball Bat of Fortitude' I like the fact that you're playing a random woman instead of a buff ex-marine bald dude or some shit like that. I dislike the lack of zombie children. I thought the game would be full co-op (aka L4D), glad i was wrong. Can't wait to see more of this on E3. No worries man. However, you aren't really a random woman, you're something like either a buff black guy, a female assassin who's good with blades, some businessman (or something), or some other chick. I can't even remember. The characters don't sound great, and aren't random at all, but are pretty stereotypical 'survivor'/ 'unusual badass' types. Indeed, though, it can be played 1, 2, 3, or 4 player from start to finish, apparently. All of it is in the same game experience. Which is very nice. Zombies should be a "strength in numbers" sort of foe not a 12 health bar boss thing. Totes. I wish more games would make the most of this. Old school Resident Evil is so intense because it understood that so well. Edited May 23, 2011 by kenshi_ryden
deanb
You just linked to the same video Kenshi did yesterday Anyway my comments: Legs need tweaking. That map needs moving ever so slightly more in the corner. Looks nice enough. I'm not so hyped, btw whats the random blood ...sheet that seems to be the default weapon without the baseball bat. Isn't it meant to be an RPG? Or just an open world title? edit: have I just had this tab open for ages? edit2: Oh I opened it the same time as the witcher tab.... SomTervo
Like open world L4D with RPGing. Take the quest system and RPGing of Oblivion/Fallout, plop it in visceral FPS combat with co-op like L4D and hand-to-hand combat like Condemned. Open world, too, indeed. Whole place available from the start. 4 player drop-in-drop-out co-op at any point. The RPG aspect is less pronounced, though, it's an action game primarily. TheMightyEthan
Where were people getting the impression that it was an RPG? (honest question, no snark intended) The video made it look like almost exactly what I was expecting, except maybe somewhat more action-oriented. Kovach_
I thought it would have more shooty, less stabby elements. Again, glad i was wrong.
