P4: Gritty Reboot
I gotta second the quad-core.recommendation. Most games coming out will be optimized for more than two cores, and I think the trend will continue. I just built my wife a PC recently and went with a quad; couldn't be happier with it. deanb
Yeah I second (eighth?) the choice of a quad core in a gaming PC.
excel_excel
Yeah I agree with quad core too. Like my smashing PC I feel your pain and worry about the PC though, but trust me once everythings fine hardware side, it all clicks into place. Did you get someone to fix the wire yet Enervation? Mal
Geez, I recall not even a year ago that most folks would just say duel core, anymore would be not needed. Next thing you know most people will say 12 GB of RAM, 16 GB for extra padding, to be minimum. Actually, I got a question. I don't think there anything wrong but... every so often, it only happened twice, when I push the power button to turn on my computer, it turns on for one second then it turns off. Next push will turn it on for good. Again, I doubt nothing major. Just wondering. Edited April 26, 2011 by MaliciousH
Yantelope
With PC components you're always going to weigh price vs. performance. Hedging your bets against future upgrades is very very difficult. I bought the Core i7 thinking that socket was going to be around for at least a few more years but it's already been retired after just a couple of years. It's very hard to plan more than a year in advance but I will say that what is happening now is that computers are starting to use quad cores for games. No, I'm busy every weekday with work or classes (classes in the afternoon/evening, work in the morning). I only have weekends off, so every time something breaks I always have to wait a whole week before I can even get it checked. It's a pretty tiny wire, I'm not sure how I'll be able to fix it. P4: Gritty Reboot
Well, it's that time again. The beast has gotten a little long in the tooth, sporting a downright medieval 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo and only 2 gigs of RAM. A new PC build for p4warrior. Luckily, I've already got some spare parts lying around the house, and I'm going to reuse my new-ish graphics card, so I think I can get in at around $200 USD. End result - CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black Edition @ 3.4 GHz ($160) Mobo: Gigabyte ATX Motherboard (Included w/CPU) Memory: 8 Gig DDR3 PC3-10666 @ 1333 MHz (Free from friend who works @ RAM manufacturer) Video Card: ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB (Carried over from old build) Storage: 500GB HDD @ 10,000 RPM + 1 TB External (Carried over) Monitor: 26" Samsung T260HD LCD Monitor @ 1920x1200 Native Resolution (already have) OS: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit ($60 through student discount) Surface Type: Rich Mahogany Desk (Handcrafted with my own braun and mansweat) Reclining Apparatus: Lawn chair (Found on sidewalk in Pomona) I am going to upgrade the video card eventually, but on my current budget I'd rather just upgrade from my Core 2 Duo, RAM, and OS situation and worry about that later. The 4870 is still pretty great, especially because I got it on clearance for $70.
Enervation
I'd highly suggest replacing your, uh... chair. Consider an upgrade for it?

MetalCaveman
Finally built it today. Thanks to all who helped me! \m/ \m/ \m/ \m/ Made some changes though, since some of the stuff on my original list wasn't available and because I also got some extra money to use. Anyway, here is the final list (I may be forgetting something... Not sure): Cooler Master HAF X Cooler Master V8 Intel i7-2600K Asus Maximus Extreme IV Asus Matrix GTX 580 (More of a graphics brick instead of graphics card. ) Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000 (yeah I know... But the graphics card said it needed at least 700W so I thought this would be better. ) 16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM 1600MHz OCZ Vertex 3 SSD Samsung Blu-Ray drive Seagate 1TB HDD I probably went overkill with that stuff, but I couldn't avoid it. Also, the actual process of building it was incredibly easy, the software side... Not so much. Anyway, thanks again to all who helped me with this stuff! \m/ \m/
Luftwaffles
Out of curiosity, how much did that cost you? Because damn, that is a beast of a PC.
MetalCaveman
Counting the extra 200mm fan and the thermal paste/material/stuff it was $2821 dollars or 34810 pesos.
Mal
... Geez, I wish I have that sort of dough on for a computer. I would be GOD.
