I caved in. I made my first purchase through GMG because they have another 20% off discount. $48 for a game that will unlock in less than 6 hours.

Much like Skyrim, I'll have it on PC, but I'll be playing with a controller. My current setup for my PC isn't ideal for gaming, but my ridiculously long wired 360 controller resolves the issue.

I've put in about 3hrs last night (through ways which mean I'll likely be starting afresh tonight when I've the disc in my hands). How Spoilery are we going? Pretty much everything I've done so far apart from "that segment" is what we've seen in their trailers with the 50's suburbia and saving the town hall. Then from there a little bit trecking back way I came to do the town building stuff which is a little bit fiddly and not overly well explained but you soon grasp the hang of it. Kinda useful in that you can essentially just build up a house almost ASAP instead of questing until someone bequeaths you with one.

My main peeve is that they've changed a lot of the controls around (e.g VATS is now Q instead of V, F isn't the 1st/3rd person changer, in fact I don't know what is so I just have to scroll). I like the inventory pick-up, and there's nice touches like the changed HUD in the power armour. Apparently it supports DS4 native, so while it's kinda sacrilege I might go with that.

Not my pic (I'll grab one later) but surprised to see some of the options available in the character creator:

I'm playing as "Barbara Gordon" (which get's the greeting of "Mrs Gordon") with Femme Fatale hair and a splotch on my eye which is kinda neat look. While I'll unlikely play with him much (especially considering the first thing he does is somehow summon a bunch of enemies while I'm digging around for loot) the dog is useful early on if only cos you can crack open his rib cage and store all manner of spare guns and armour in him to carry.

The armour pieces stuff I'd seen in some of the leaked video but it works different to how I'd thought, rather than build up a set of armour using the pieces, upgrade existing, you instead just apply them individually, which kinda sucks since you can't directly compare with a suit, but so far seems you get better DT off it.

I guess it makes sense since you won't spend the rest of the game going "wait, but why were we in Cryo, this is unlike other vaults, is this the big mystery" I guess it makes sense they'd have computer terminals that explicitly state the purpose of the vault. But it's still highly unlike other vaults where you have to piece it together from logs and state of the vault.

Also considering from her time span she ran from a nuke, locked away for a few minutes, then wandering around a vault and into the outer world she's sure nonplussed by it all.

PS4 version here. Haven't really run into any noticeable bugs or framerate drops yet. I've only gotten about four hours in, but I would think that would be long enough for me to notice a framerate drop. Either the day one patch fixed the issue for the most part or my PS4 is special.

Edit: I just read that having a faster hard drive helps to mitigate the stuttering problem. I use a hybrid drive in my PS4 so maybe that's why the game feels fine to me.

How's everyone fairing so far?

I'm not overly far into the story. Got to Diamond City and initiated a couple stuff there but other than that largely exploring the northern area of the map (though starting to hit high-level stuff so gonna put off for a while) and a bit of digging around the main city area, which is really nice. It's a shame most of the buildings are boarded up like the previous games, but it's much more denser now and with the vertical added it's pretty nice. Cleared out a couple buildings and adding stuff to my map.

Sanctuary I've got a few buildings made including a "Minuteman HQ" which I'm filling with crap weapons for settlers and other stuff like that, as well as decorating as a army HQ/barracks style. I've been checking. some builds online and folks have walled off fortresses and aerial walkways and all sorts. Pretty neat.

The limb damage stuff is great. I figured from their blog post on updating that that it'd mean that when you shoot a limb off it'd be more accurate to where you shot, but nope it means during fights you end up with armless ghouls and protectrons without feet:

Rather enjoying it, and nice to see what they've updated the visuals on, and which they've left (e.g most enemies are same style, apart from ghouls which are less people-like now...oh god Glowing Ones are pretty). Weapons seem to be the main change. Oh and the pi-boy which is now more "functional" with you loading in holotapes, and the plug to R2-D2 your way into some systems. Not used the app for that yet. It said I'd need to reset my game so couldn't be arsed, will do it tonight. Also now I've the actual disc I'll install to my SSD and see if it means I lose loading screens like Skyrim did.

Only bummer is the dialogue really. It's nice that it's fully voiced, but as expected that came at a loss of nuance to the conversations and practically no perk benefits show up apart from the "money?" "more money?" stuff. Also it's kinda silly you can move a little bit and it ends the convo to need to start up again.

I got to level 11 last night. Last mission I did involved the Memory Den which we've seen in trailers. I finally got a decent outfit that isn't various pieces of Raider gear hobbled together, so that's nice. Once you figure out how crafting works, it's a lot of fun to go around, clean up Sanctuary, plant some crops, build new structures, etc.

I'm not crazy about how you level up. It's entirely too perk based, and honestly not too many of the perks seem better than just upping your SPECIAL stats.

I'm loving it so far. I'm about level 19 and I've explored most of the NW quarter of the map. I've read a bunch of posts and article complaining about the early game and encouraging people to make a beeline for Diamond City and I whoelheartedly disagree. There's a lot of level-appropriate and fun adventuring to be done before you got to Fenway.

TCP: You gotta balance SPECIAL stat buys with perk buys. The weapon damage perks are good, judging by the immediate significant increase in damage I got when I put a point in the rifle perk (which also covers shotguns). The crafting perks for weapons and armor are necessary, too. Putting points in hacking and lockpicking makes dungeon navigation much easier as well.

Dean: the game detects when you're aiming at a limb and cripples/destroys the correct limb. Some guns are better at it than others, it seems, and shooting from the hip is not very accurate, so you may be pointing your gun at the enemy's leg but actually end up hitting the torso or arm. It sorta works like previous Fallouts if you had few points in a  given gun skill,  the spread was really bad. Some guns and mods also hurt the spread of a weapon. I definitely destroy enemies' legs on the regular when I aim for them with a precise weapon.

Biggest and only real glitch so far: I dismissed Dogmeat in Diamond City in favor o f a new companion. I sent him to Sanctuary, but he never showed up and he has a bunch of my stuff, including a minigun. :(

Edit: Oh, and it runs well on my laptop on ultra settings, too. This will make my trip to the in-laws for Thanksgiving a lot more palatable.

Dogmeat is probably in Sanctuary.  You probably just haven't noticed because he never wanders around.  He stays in one of the doghouses.  My advice is to delete every doghouse in Sanctuary except for one, so then he'll always be in that one when you need him.

I don't recall, but if you highlight an item in a companion's inventory that s/he can equip, the button designation will appear below the inventory window alongside the designations for "take," "take all," "inspect," etc. Most of the companions' default armors are full suits that don't allow you to put arm and leg pieces over them, so make sure to keep around some thin clothing to keep them warm and decent if you equip complex armor.

At the moment, I'm using the Grognak armor on all of my human companions, which allows for arm and leg pieces, but no chest piece.
