Mr. GOH!
I mean, yeah, the graphics are secondary to the gameplay and writing for me, and I will absolutely be buying this game because I fucking LOVE Fallout games (though I can't justify doing the GMG preorder yet). I am nevertheless surprised Bethesda has not significantly upped its character art and animation game, is all. deanb
Â (such as not running right on Playstation) From all the material I've seen it looks like next-gen only, and PS4 doesn't have the problems that PS3 did, like a weird architecture and separate, limited pools of RAM, so I don't think there's any reason to think it won't run right on PS4. Â Â That remark was more of a generic "for 4 games it ran like poop on a third of the platforms, even when they remade the engine as "Creation"" (I used PC, so not a personal issue but I imagine not one PS3 owners were fond of), to go along with much of the "they never bothered much with the technical side of things". One thing I remembered today was the loading screens for entering caves n buildings, kinda hoping that goes away, it's quite "last gen". Especially with the vastly improved RAM, would hope they can hold a building interior in the memory.

IDDQD
If only they would realise what a massive waste of time this will turn out to be once the game gets released.
Mister Jack
Apparently there's some rumor floating around from a leak 11 months back that you can only play as a male character in Fallout 4 for story reasons. This leak came from someone who was fired from Bethesda for a script leak he did beforehand. Â Â I gotta say, I have a hard time believing Bethesda would go this route, especially in this political climate. Â Not only has every other open-world game they've made so far had a female option, but they would get crucified by the gaming press if this were true. TheMightyEthan
Yeah, there's no way that's true.
IDDQD
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that dude from the trailer speaks, which leads us to believe this will be a first bethesda RPG to feature fully voiced protagonist. Although what's to stop them from having fully voiced man and woman (aside form money)? Inquisition even had two different vice actors per gender. Faiblesse Des Sens
^The Kotaku source (which apparently was so correct that Bethesda cut them off from the rest of their press stuff) indicates that yes, there's a speaking protagonist, and that you can be a male or female. Â Casting calls for both the male and female versions of the player character note that the player begins the game in a cryogenic sleep chamber.
Vecha
Yeah, I think it's the same engine. Â Just glad no one here is trying to say the game looks WORSE than Red Dead Redemption and/or other open-world last gen games. Mr. GOH!
It looks worse than GTA V, which is a last-gen game.
TheMightyEthan
It doesn't look worse than the last-gen versions of GTA V, at least.
Vecha
https://m.reddit.com/r/Fallout/comments/395mkk/lets_talk_some_sense_heres_why_fallout_4_looks/ Â Found this to be a pretty interesting theory.
Mr. GOH!
I would argue it looks worse than the last-gen GTA in some ways, but most of that is a result of the art design rather than the graphics engine. Â Edit: I don't know much about how graphics work on a technical level, but that post did really highlight the difference in texture quality between certain scenes in the trailer. I wonder if it's a case of the house just not being as finished as the other parts shown. Edited June 10, 2015 by Mr. GOH!
TCP
No release date... you'd think if it was going to be next year they'd say "2016" at the end at the very least.... Mister Jack
Thank god there's actual conversations now. Â And they don't take place in an awkward first-person staredown anymore either. Â Fantastic.
Faiblesse Des Sens
Unfortunately they haven't done anything about their absolutely terrible animations so I'm not sure that's as big as an improvement as you're thinking. They straight up just need a new animation team.

deanb
Â Gameplay video. Â Oh god do the faces still look dead n animations are funky but this is a bethesda fallout game. Pretty sure that's Troy Baker too. Â Not in the above but sounds like you can craft buildings too which'll be interesting element I guess. SomTervo
Fallout 4 will be out on 10 November 2015. Have people here missed that? Â [Edit: I got to eat my hat after saying it would certainly not be out until 2016] Â Â Comparisons to Witcher 3 might be unfair, but given similarities it's easy to make and it's kinda poopy a decades old studio is popping out the likes of the above on a third party engine, and a small relatively new Polish studio is popping out the likes of Witcher on their own engine. Well, CDPR is no longer that small, as far as I know. We're talking about a multi-national staff of hundreds of people here. Â I remember that bethesda rpgs never were that good when it came to tech standing behind them. All their games looked good because the art was great, but engine always had it's quirks, like stiff animations, very plastic looking shaders or character models straight from the uncanny valley. Maybe it's time to get a new engine, but I really won't mind if the graphics aren't "as good as witcher 3, omg", as long as art design will be as good as always and characters don't animate like someone rammed a pole up their ass. Â Â Swear I responded to this, but I'm pretty certain The Witcher 3's team was only like 100 people. It's a relatively small team who achieved something incredible. Strangelove
That pipboy in the collector's edition looks like something you would have gotten in a happy meal back in the 90s(I cant say for the quality of current happy meal toys). Or something Gamestop would have given you for preordering back in the early 2000s when they still gave you actual stuff or preordering. IDDQD
While patiently waiting for FO4 I went back to New Vegas since I never got around to playing any of the DLC. So far so good, though I find it a bit annoying that each one of these DLCs start off with someone talking my ear off for 30 minutes before sending me off to do some fetching for them. TheFlyingGerbil
The trains in fallout 3 are NPCs with train hats and your train ride is the inside of a helmet. How on earth do game engines like that exist. LINK I'm guessing there are significant improvements in 4. Though from the reaction the trailer got it seems they're not exactly citing edge still Edited July 22, 2015 by TheFlyingGerbil
deanb
I'd guess if it was a totally new engine and not just Gamebryo/Creation then they'd have made a point of that. Â I've seen the hat thing floating around the past few days, it's rather ingenious given the engine doesn't support vehicles. It was a bit of a tease to have FO3 with a bunch of cars and motorbikes lying around and no way to actually travel in them.
