As a kid I never had a GBC, but my first crush had won one at a school rifle, we didn't know any english, but we still played. More like I would watch her play and try to help, we picked Charmander and we named it... Chari! Which also carried on as her nickname.

Since I wasn't directly playing the game I wouldn't count it as my first. Later on a friend gave me Pokemon Ruby so I picked Torchic and left it as default, I think I changed the name when I transferred him to Platinum, can't really remember.

Fire-types are usually the most popular and any trainer knows why. Although the past gen and current gen I picked a water type (piplup) and a grass-type (Snivy)

It all began with bulbasaur. Use vine whip! Use it harder, bulbasaur! Harder! I began with blue and an intense regimen of Pokemon everything. The card game wasn't my incipient TCG, but I've attended the most tournaments under its pidgeotto-pinions. Then Yellow arrived. Then Gold and Silver. Then the series began its crawl into hackneyed territory, and I quit cold spearow. With the release of Diamond and Pearl, I attempted to reenter the arena. Nope. Still hackneyed.

I still miss it.

Charmander! Called....CHARMANDER. Cause the games put them in ALLCAPS.

Ahh Charmander....we worked hard to beat Brock didn't we?

Me too, and yeah, first gym boss is rock just to screw over charmander. Second gym? Water. SONOFA!!!!

While we're on the topic of naming:

Squirtle, which I accidentally nicknamed Squirtle, so even when he was a blastoise, I still called him squirtle. He was the only pokemon I ever used to fight. He was level 80 when I went to the elite four, never beat them because my second highest pokemon was a level 10 pidgey.

My bro and I got a yellow GBC for Christmas in '98 (don't ask me how I remember the year. I just do). We asked for Pokemon Yellow but my parents got Red, so that's what we played until we got back home (we always spent Xmas at my grandparents') and got an exchange. So normally we would've had Pikachu as our first Pokemon but it ended up being a Charmander I think.

I still have my yellow GBC and it works perfectly fine (as do all GameBoys apparently :P), but I've long since lost my Yellow cart. We moved houses and just completely disappeared. I'm still pissed about that >:| Though I do still have my Pokemon Gold from when we bought that, so it's not all bad.

Pokemon Yellow wasn't released in the US until 1999 and 2000 in the EU.

I got Pokemon Red when it was released so I was 15 at the time. My other friends and I traded and did all the pokemon stuff until I realized that Pokemon was huge with the elementary school kids and that killed a bit of my interest in it. There were plenty of people, including a girl who is now my wife, who made fun of me for playing it.

Would you look at that. It WAS '99. We also got Donkey Kong 64 that same Xmas and it, too was released in 1999.

I remember being a bit upset/confused as to why Pikachu was not a big deal in the game like he was in the cartoon.

Hopefully more confused than upset. I'm just picturing a 15year old with a quavering lip, "pikachu... where are you...?"

Ha, yes, more confused. I was coming off the FFVII days so I was really confused as to why there was almost no story. The show came out a little before the game in America if I recall correctly so if you started watching the cartoon first you'd be confused why Pikachu is not a big deal in the Red/Blue version. Consequently that's the whole reason they made the Yellow version.

This is probably the best place to post this.

I saw a little kid at walmart playing pokemon on a gameboy color. I asked him if it was pokemon yellow. He looked shocked

"how did you know!?"

"it's pokemon and it's a yellow cart"

"how do you know about pokemon!?"

He seemed shocked that an old man like me knew about Pokemon. It was hilarious. I told him I had Pokemon Red when it first came out and he said "that was before I was born!". That made me feel a bit old.

On a separate occasion I was wearing a Pokemon shirt at Target and overheard "Mommy mommy, that man was wearing pokemon!".
