Total War: Shogun 2

I tried the demo and I thought it was almost perfect.

Almost. Why, you say?

Because it looks like somebody took every single color in the game and turned up the brightness intensity to 500%. It honestly looks like I'm playing Shogun 2: Bright Color Era on my PC. It's been pretty damn annoying since it occurs both on the world map and in battle as well.

I'd post screenshots but I can't seem to figure out where Steam or the game has decided to keep them.

Total War tends to be one of those games that likes to disable my ATI gamma settings, I don't know if that's the same problem you're having but ATITrayTools works as a fix, allowing you to activate a gamma profile while in-game.

I didn't play much fo the Shogun demo. I downloaded it like the minute it was out and when I loaded into the battle, I got a black screen with the start battle button, is this right? I was expecting the option to arrange my troops before I started. Anyway, without the chance to get a good look at what I was playing with and where they all were (I know, I should have paused, it just dawned on me now) I got whooped pretty fast. I didn't spend any more time with it as I had to be somewhere but I'm going to load it up today and have another go at it.

I'll definitely be getting Shogun 2 anyway. I love the Total War series.

I've had my eye on this for quite a while, but after playing the demo I'm not going to get it for now.

It just seems like a huge time investment in order to really get the most out of it, and I've got way too many other games on queue.

I don't think it's too much of a time investment. You can get sucked in for sure but playing it sparingly, you can have a single campaign last for ages jsut doing a handful of turns here and there.

Or you can just do skirmishes, they can be fun too.

Well, it's like how I bought Civ 5 at launch and have only played one full game.

It's something I'd probably enjoy, but I'd need to let myself devote a bunch of time to, for the launch price to be worth the buy.

  • 3 weeks later...

Shogun 2 hit retail today and, as is becoming tradition, I went on the hunt for the collector's edition. First stop was HMV. They didn't have it but would order it in for the cheap price of €78. Screw that! I want it today and for no more than €70! So off I go to Gamestop and as luck would have it, I grab the last of the only two collectors editions they had left.

The collectors edition comes with the limited edition of the game which features 4 "exclusive" unlocks: The Hattori Ninja clan, the battle of Nagashino historical battle, special armour for your online avatar and some starting XP for your online avatar. The collectors edition comes with one more thing - a lovely hand-painted bamboo chess set. You can see pictures of it here at Eurogamer.

Anyway, onto the game. DX11 isn't patched in yet and since DX11 support encompasses DX10.1 (Don't ask me why), the game runs only in DX9 mode. This, unfortunately, means that you can't enable AA through the in-game options but I had no problem forcing AA through catalyst. The game runs well and everything seems to be smoother than in ETW and NTW - loading is faster, the campaign map doesn't seem to lag (yet) and battles play like silk (so far). I've played just under 2 hours so far and everything seems to work well at first glance. One bug (or maybe it's just a change) that will be immediately noticeable is that in battle, the markers aren't showing - this means no path markers or selection markers - and it can throw you off but it's perfectly manageable. I don't think I'll get really stuck into it until later on tonight but I'm looking forward to checking out the new multiplayer campaign mode.

So is it just me or has anyone else here bought the game on day 1?

I wouldn't mind in the future. Currently I'm not getting it since I have 3 huge edits to finish for clients for next week. I think I'd be up for April. Games like this would purely be for me, since my wife doesn't play strategy hence my delay :/.

P.s on a scale of total war is it more like a medieval to 2 jump? Or Rome meets shogun. I didn't like empire much and have yet to play napoleon. Demo left me indifferent, but demos always do for rts games.

I pre-ordered the game and have been playing it since it unlocked. I'm really impressed with the singleplayer co-op, and the multiplayer clans sound interesting. Apparently you're able to tie your clan to a Steam group. I'd like to know how many people on TAY have Shogun and/or would be interested in forming a clan for multiplayer.

That'd be pretty nifty. I am 100% down with joining a TAY clan for Shogun. I'm still exploring the game, but it looks like it'd be a blast in multiplayer.

Steam ID is Mr. GOH! for anyone who wants to add me as a friend for some samurai battlin'.

I got it on release day as well. I have never played a total war before. I gotta unlearn all these starcraft strategies. RUSH RUSH RUSH doesn't seem to work all that well...

I first played as the hatori clan all this week and was steamrolling through the weaker clans, but I should have been setting up alliances and being more diplomatic. My one ally sat by and watched me feebly try to take a castle, failing misreably. Then out of a nowhere a stronger clan just marches right in and takes 2 of my provinces.

SHAMEFUL DISPLAY!!!!

Needless to say I suck but the game is very very addicting. I get bored with Civ, can't play more than an hour before I get sleepy, but Total War strikes a balance between diplomatic tactics and combat tactics.

If anyone is still sitting on the sidelines and wondering, yes, the game is great, and fun for newcomers looking to get into battle style strategy games as well.

/sarcasm: I would consider Shogun 2 to be the best JRPG to come out in the last 5 years...
