TheForgetfulBrain
I love greasy food and I love beer. Great for the morale, not so great for the wallet or the physique and general bodily systems, particularly in a multi-year binge. My once rail-thin physique now looks something like this: Anyway, I'm miles deep in credit card debt and waist deep in stomach, so it's time for me to wave longingly at my dearly beloved booze and fatty treats and start some willpower rolls. Right now, I'm gonna shoot for soup and salad at meals, and oatmeal or lowfat yogurt for breakfast. On that note - General thoughts on diets, personal experiences, dreams and aspirations, etc? MasterDex
I want to lose weight myself but I can't see my diet changing. I'm practically 00% carnivore so it'd be hard to cut fat from my diet. To counteract that, I've started cycling again and I'm giving up smoking. Neither is off to a great start. I'd like to be fit. I don't have to be totally skinny or really buff but if I lost my beer belly and treetrunk thighs, I'd be happy enough. It's just soooo hard! Ill go back to vegetarian someday probably soon, but for now im loving eating meat. Its so good. I also need to start working out since ive been gaining weight recently. when im on a diet i just work out about 4 or 5 times a week and eat a bit less, but i dont starve myself and i dont deprive myself of fatty food, i just eat less of it. peteer01
I have some ancient Japanese secrets. Or, at least, secrets my Japanese wife has grown up with that make so much sense that some of them are worth sharing. The simplest one is this: Don't eat after 10:00PM. Period. That's it. That simple. I like it because it falls into the "So easy, even I can do it!" category of advice. If you're out drinking, you can still drink, but don't eat after 10:00PM. If you're not out drinking, just don't eat or drink anything with calories after 10:00PM. (She's got some other rules and guidelines, which help explain how she's able to eat as much as me and be consistently underweight according to her BMI) Now, that said, I definitely can throw myself in with the rest of the group in saying that I want to lose a bit of weight. Winter always makes me a bit more sedentary, and I haven't been the best at not snacking lately... That said, winter is wrapping up, and for better or for worse, that big bag of Valentine's Day Peanut M&M in my fridge is going to be gone in the next few weeks at the latest, so hopefully less chocolate and warmer weather will push the scale back in the right direction. excaliburps
I consider myself fit. Well, physically that is. I mean I'm turning 30 this year. So, I stopped smoking last Dec. Haven't had even a puff since. I do go to the gym about 3-5 times a week. And that is the solution, my friends. By "going to the gym" I don't mean going there and using the treadmill, cardio machine for 10 minutes and then going home. Nope. Do weight-lifting. Use a whole body program for at least 2-3 weeks to adapt your body to the pain, soreness, etc. And trust me. You will be sore. After that, use splits as a program. If you guys need any help I'm willing. Me and my brother are heavy into weights, martial arts, etc. Some people find it surprising that I'm a nerd when they see me in-person. Not sounding like an ass or bragging, but we have to admit. Nerds aren't known for their physique or for being physically active. For diet? I recommend NOT drinking anything in a can. Water. Just water. FYI a can of Coke is equivalent to 1 Hershey bar. If you're feeling the munchies I recommend nuts, crackers, etc. Things that will make you feel full. Anyone here who's a weight-lifting/Martial arts junkie as well?

The vast majority of people around me who I'd say are in great physical shape don't have a gym membership. They might engage in physical activities of some form or another (like riding a bike for pleasure), but most of them just eat very well and live a pedestrian oriented lifestyle. I do agree that the gym can have a very big, and positive, impact on your weight, body composition and energy level, among other things...but there are other options. TheForgetfulBrain
I've tried going to the gym a few times, but I never keep up with it and it ends up being a huuuuge waste of money because those predatory bastards know that a large portion of people that sign up for the gym are going to do just that - go rarely - so they get you into these huge contracts that are a bitch to get out of, and they make some really shady deals. Hell, the 24 I went to was part of a class-action lawsuit for charging people's credit cards after they'd canceled. I'd like to do a gym-thing eventually, perhaps, but for now I'm going to try and do the running thing again and some minor home-weight lifting, sit-ups/push-ups. Ugh. Gotta start doing that again. And Peteer - thanks! I'll try and do the past 10pm thing.
Mal
-Sees Peter's wife advice while eating a large plate of noodles at 11:20- Great advice however. I should seriously follow that... some other time. Well from me to you folks... as some professional says, don't be afraid of a bit more of breakfast. Then go with snacks until 6 or so when you should have your dinner. Don't be like me who have dinner at 8-9 PM. If I could, I would switch it to 6-7 PM but its hard to change a whole family's habit. This will give you plenty of time to digest anything before sleeping. Hell, have a snack, before 10PM, if you want. AND I SHOULD REALLY EXERCISE MORE, YOU (ME) POT BELLY PIG. Am I 210 yet? excaliburps
@peteer01: Yeah. If you're not going to be going to the gym consistently, at least do something physical. A lot of people don't know it but brisk walking (Not even running) burns a lot of fat. And proper diet. If you eat a lot don't assume everything's hopeless. You can eat a lot and be fit. I used to have "cheat" days myself. I'd watch what I eat everyday except on Sundays. On Sundays I eat whatever I want. cakes, pizza, etc. As long as you're burning those off the rest of the week, that should be enough. Depends on what you're after. Just a normal, non-pudgy body is easy enough. Abs? Chest And being able to fill out those clothes sexily? You have to work out. @ForgetfulBrain: I know what you mean.My advice is go with a buddy. It's easier to work out when someone's motivating you. This has also been confirmed to be a fact. If you go to the gym and work out. And you stop for a week, chances are you won't be coming back for at least a month. The first month is always the hardest one. Body ache, having the motivation to do it, etc. Once you get past that, and people start noticing you're putting on muscle and whatnot you'll be motivated yourself. If I lived near or was in the same country as you guys I'd help you out. No joke. I'd drag you to the gym if I had to. That's what I do here with some of the people I know now.
TheForgetfulBrain
Exercise buddies are definitely the way to go. I've been trying to get the girlfriend to start exercise with me pretty much since we started dating (and I stopped exercising), but it is a difficult task, especially when she brings out the puppy eyes - "But I don't want to!" Aiiihy. Rebuffing my attempts soon.
slithy toves
i can't really recommend any losing weight tips but i can give you some staying healthy tips. i have to do gym type stuff cos i commute, so there isn't a whole lot i can do about maintaining a consistently pedestrian lifestyle besides moving, and having a gym at work helps but if you find something you like doing and that actually challenges you more than just physically (for me it's yoga and dancing, probs not yr cup of tea but hiking, rocking climbing, martial arts etc.) yr more likely to stick w/ it. as for eating if i think about the word diet i immediately start to eat more, i'm so much of a fucking rebel i even rebel against myself, so usually i just pay attention to how i feel and if i start feeling crappy or lethargic i eat less or eat different stuff or otherwise change it up. i actually just started losing the whole shit-ton of weight i gained when i quit smoking (according to my doctor it did something to my hormones or something and was compounded by some meds i was on that i stopped taking) but actually losing that weight that felt like it was never ever going to come off at this point kinda kick started me back into healthier habits again so setting some kind of goals and hitting them helps. cos progress totes compels you to go further.

Nothing like you weigh 200 pounds and you want to be 160 in a month. I mean you want to lose 5 pounds in a month. Something like that. Also remember that muscles are heavier than fat. So even if you're still 180 after all that working out it might mean that the fat got turned into muscle. I love lifting weights. Don't know why but I do. TheForgetfulBrain
Jogging through the park is actually ideal - she lives across the street from Golden Gate Park, and we've done it a few times - it's just finding the time and getting our energy up. I know what you mean about exercise being addictive eventually, and progress making you more inspired to make more progress - it feels good after a while, it's just getting into a new habit that's the toughie. slithy toves
when i started doing yoga when i couldn't take classes i like literally had to keep it to like 10 minutes a day at first or i totes wouldn't do it, then i would feel guilty about not doing it and then skip it for like 2 weeks before getting back into it. so i told myself doing something at all was way better than doing it one day for an hour and then not again for a couple weeks after that, and to this day even when i can't or don't workout cos of other things i still do my 10 minutes of yoga. Yeah. I know what you mean. Getting the the motivation and energy to do it takes some time before it becomes routine. Once it does, it should be easy. Maybe jogging's not her thing? Try boxing as well. That's one of the most tiring things I've ever done in my life. One 3 minute mitt round (with medium to heavy impact) will do wonders. Of course your arms, forearms, back will hurt like hell at first, but the payoff will be amazing. It could also be fun seeing as you're a couple. peteer01
if you find something you like doing and that actually challenges you more than just physically (for me it's yoga and dancing, probs not yr cup of tea but hiking, rocking climbing, martial arts etc.)I lost the tendons on the outside of my right foot indoor bouldering. (Bouldering is a type of rock climbing that's more about a specific path than just climbing up.) But bouldering and rock climbing are both awesome. My wife and I used to do it together before we had kids.
slithy toves
but isn't getting injured doing something totes awesome that you like way better than getting injured forcing yrself to jog cos you feel like you need cardio? another reason to find something you dig and go for it imo. excel_excel
This 10 pm advice sounds so great. I'm definetly giving that a try. But the problem is if your out drinking and stuff what the hell can you eat that has low low calories? and drinking beer with no calories.... D: As for other stuff...baby steps baby steps! I used to be really into Wii fit back at my parents house. i have it with me in my flat but just don't use it anymore, got EA sports active for Wii on the cheap and its fantastic but still haven't used it much. Dude, beer is one of THE major hindrance to your weight loss. Hence "beer gut". Beer is made of carbs that get stuck in your body. We need carbs for energy, but too much and it gets stored. Don't drink beer! Or Coke. Times like this I wish we were neighbors so I'd drag you to the gym everyday and slap your head when you order a pint or something.
