Little Pirate
When Facebook friends post 'LIKE THIS TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS' or 'THIS KID NEEDS A MILLION LIKES TO HELP DONATE MONEY FOR HIS CANCER'. It's just like e-mailing a chain letter to me. STAHP IT.
Thursday Next
I especially hate those when they are defended by "It's better than doing nothing." Spreading your arms when you jump off the top of a skyscraper is better than doing nothing in terms of reducing your terminal velocity. Unfortunately it isn't better enough to in any way affect the terminal nature of your change in velocity at the bottom of the skyscraper. Eleven
Related to this are those posts that claim something, usually about your health, and saying that you should stop doing whatever because of some scientific study or an article written by some doctor named in the article. I mean, who would ever doubt the thing if a doctor wrote it? But a quick googling of the information will show you that it's entirely inaccurate, and is merely a chain letter. And then those people who Like the article, and add on their experiences. A quick link to snopes, or to the first search result in google would fix it, but I hate to be that guy who does that, especially when a friend of a friend already posted their own thoughts agreeing with the article. The thing that ticks me off is that people are willing to believe the ridiculousness of it all. Don't they ever question how true the article could be? It's usually about some insane thing about eating shrimp, or diet coke. People eat shrimp and drink diet coke all the time. How come they never heard of this serious health risk before in their life? And then, since these are facebook friends, I witness it having an actual effect on their life. And mine. When people tell me not to drink diet coke. TheMightyEthan
My favorite is when chain letters say "Snopes even says this is true" and link to the Snopes article, which in actuality says it's completely false.

TheMightyEthan
I did read an article several months ago that was talking about how in the US voter turnout is up among younger people, and they hypothesize that one of the reasons is that slacktivism is a thing now and voting is very similar. So the idea of "Liking" Facebook posts to make a difference might actually be encouraging people to vote more, which I guess is one positive thing.
Mister Jack
I dunno if I agree with that assessment. It takes no effort to like something on Facebook. That's why so many people do it. Voting is simple on paper but in practice it takes a lot of trouble.

Mister Jack
I don't like people trying to argue to me that it doesn't matter if I personally hate an artist/actor/author and that I should still buy an album/movie/book because it's good. Maybe it is good, but is it so hard to understand that I don't want to financially support a douchebag?

deanb
Hah, was having a discussion about it with my two housemates. Archeology student,s thus quite well versed with history. Talking about how in many cases it's kinda silly because there's many times it's a legitimate comparison as Hitler did so much it's inevitable someone will do something similar. Popular Post Strangelove
This is definitely spurred on by Kotaku and it's Dragon Crown post, but white knights annoy me. Men who choose to view everything as sexist or misogynistic. Especially when a woman has never brought it up. Just shut up.
Popular Post Thursday Next
I'm a bit conflicted about White Knighting (though I think we are talking about different definitions. If you leave it to minorities to stand up for their rights, then it will always be a minority of people who are complaining and minorities are easy to ignore. For stuff to change you often need the silent majority to get involved. What I have more of an issue with is that White Knighting is almost always negative. Deriding Dead or Alive for having bikini clad girls etc. It's rarely done in a positive way for example people talking about how good the new Lara Croft is, or how people are looking forward to playing as Nilin in Remember Me. The Scottish independence debate is similar in this respect. Salmond and co were very quick to jump on a "Vote Yes for Independence" campaign and immediately characterised the unionist vote as a "No" vote. Rather than voting "Yes" to stay part of the UK you are voting "No" to an independent Scotland. Negative campaigns are, generally speaking harder to win. I fully support anyone who wants more of new Lara, more of Chell, and Faith, and Nilin (had to look that one up). All those characters, whether they are silent protagonist or fully acted out roles are characters that I enjoyed or look forward to playing as. People who say "Oh great, this game has boobs in it, how sexist!" is an idiot. "Less games with boobs" means less games overall. That's not what I want. I don't care if those games exist, if I don't like them, I won't buy them. What I want is *more* variety. More games with well written characters that are all races, genders and ages. That's how you effect positve change. Not by bleating about what has already been done, but by demanding more from the future. *Gets off of soapbox*
Mr. GOH!
What annoys me is when people say criticisms of misogynistic character designs are irrelevant because I have a penis. Also people who characterize valid criticism as "taking everything to be offensive." Those people really piss me off. Mr. GOH!
People who don't understand that sexism implies misogyny. People who understand misogyny only as white-hot hatred of women. See, e.g.: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2012/oct/17/difference-between-sexism-and-misogyny
deanb
"Misogynists are always sexist, but sexists are not always misogynists." Sexism also implies misandry too, it's sexism, it covers all 2+ sexual identities. Not just the one, and it only leads to weaken the terms if two related words, but not the same, are used as interchangeable.
