Alex Heat
It's true that there was a lot of awesome stuff in the 90's, but I'm not that nostalgic for them. Except for the fact that Spongebob Squarepants didn't exist back then. I'm nostalgic for THOSE days.
Eleven
And people say shit like that, on Twitter or Facebook, using their iPhones, getting hundreds of retweets and likes. I'm nostalgic for the time when everything was fun, because I was a kid back then. If I could have picked the time I was born, I'd say year 2000. That way, I'd be 14 years old with easy and fast access to EVERYTHING on the internet, where I can have a phone that could do what a computer can. And I won't have to be one of those 90s kids reminiscing about the good old days, because they know deep in their sad little heart that kids these days have it exponentially better. Ugh. There was one article being shared on my facebook circle probably a year ago and it just made me so mad.
deanb
Eh, kinda hard to appreciate what they have these days when don't know much different. I was talking about Netflix to my 8 year old sister and I had to deconstruct it all the way back to "back when I was a kid we had 4 TV channels", she thought I was fucking about. At least explaining what a VHS didn't take too long, but the idea of renting a movie flew right by her head. On demand content is all she knows. This isn't any more amazing than having access to clean water from a tap as far as she's concerned. I do try and impress upon my younger siblings how mind boggling awesome it is that the device they think is just for Angry Birds is a thin slab with access to the majority of man kinds collected knowledge. TheMightyEthan
What's a VCR? A device that could record all three networks. And PBS.
Strangelove
People have NEVER thought about PBS as a legitimate channel, have they? When I was a kid if I had to decide between watching PBS or nothing, Id watch nothing.
TheRevanchist
PBS is okay, but the crap they show between their good shows is ridiculous. They have good cooking shows, NOVA, and a few good crafts shows. Other than that, who the fuck ever watches Masterpiece Theater? I don't care for shows with butlers being melancholy for 3 fucking hours straight.

Eleven
@Dean With the kids, yes, they won't appreciate how good they have it, until they come to an age where they start doing things for themselves and learn how it was done before their time. It's fine for kids to not realize how good they have it. But I think it's weird how adults (90s kids in this example) claim how good they had it with old tech and pop culture. How is having all the things earlier generations had plus the new things your generation have be such a bad thing? Those things 90s kids reminisce about aren't gone, be it music, film, or some cool tech. Almost all of it is even more accessible now, with new tech that couldn't even be possible in those times. Now if children in 2025 live in a world where internet is locked down by country due to copyright and privacy issues, THAT would be something the 00s kids have that is worth being envious about. TheMightyEthan
Does anyone actually think it was objectively better? I thought everybody knows it's just nostalgia. Nothing wrong with nostalgia. We watched DAYTIME TV. Do you realize how soul-crushing it was? I'd rather eat an iPad than go back to watching daytime TV.
Eleven
But the articles were about how the 90s were better because nostalgia. That's what's annoying. And the bulk of those articles are that. I added in the objective parts because take away nostalgia, there really was nothing in those lists that was really better.
TheRevanchist
Then you weren't watching Sally Jesse, Gordon Elliot, Ricki Lake, Maury, Jerry, etc.,. That was a fun time for laughing at people's idiocy. In The Heat Of The Night was in re-runs. Matlock, as well. Now, daytime TV is terrible: The View, The Chew, The Other View, The Ugly Mofos Who Won't Shut The Fuck Up. Thank God for downloads and OnDemand. Edit: Not saying it was the best, but it is much better, by far, IMO, than what you stated. Edited July 7, 2014 by TheRevanchist
TheMightyEthan
I watched all of those things, and they were all soul-crushing. Anyway, the spoiler bit is the mouse-over text from the actual comic page: http://xkcd.com/1348/
FredEffinChopin
Just to play devil's advocate here, I can name something that was better in the 90s: Human interaction Also the TV shows had commercials in-between, and not on top of them. But yeah, programmed TV is the oil lamp aside from that. Bubye!
TheRevanchist
There were more violent crimes during the 90's than there are now. I think that makes human interaction actually better now than then.

CorgiShinobi
I get on the 90's kid train a bit more often than I should, but it's what every generation has done for quite a while. We had it differently, both in technology and culture. Seeing kids get on about their troubles with Facebook, Snapchat, or whatever is wrong with their smartphone seems like tiddlywinks when compared to the drama faced by 80's and 90's kids. Teens use to get excited when they got their own bedroom telephone line, but now you see toddlers with hand-me-down iPhones. I use to walk a few blocks to the local video rental store by the corner grocery shop with the 64 fl oz. fountain drink for 64 cents summer deal. I now have multiple devices that can rent a video at home. There are a ton more, but damn did Ethan get it right with daytime TV too. As an 8 year-old, myself and classmates would talk about that kind of utter crap. Still, kids today will do the same thing years from now, I guarantee it. Back in my day, our smartphones had 1080p and only spoke when spoken too!

CorgiShinobi
Get off my lawn! Well said. Yep, though I hope when I legitimately say those words I'll have a patch of grass floating in the sky, ala The Jetsons. I'd sic my RoboDog on them as they blast off with their personalized Jetpack Jr. brand jetpacks while they verbally post "screw you old man" on the Super Internet, which gets somewhere between 20-50 Likes and favorited by my wife and her RoboCat.

PBS, Disney, Nick (SNICK), TGIF, fox kids and Simpsons was my tv jam. PBS: fuck yea PBS. Edited July 8, 2014 by staySICK
TheMightyEthan
Bill Nye and Carmen Sandiego were on PBS?! I loved those shows!
staySICK
PBS then syndicated to local channels. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Nye_the_Science_Guy http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Where_in_the_World_Is_Carmen_Sandiego%3F_(game_show) I remember Bill Nye being on our local ABC channel I think it was but I also watched him on PBS. I don't remember Carmen Sandiego being on anything but PBS, personally. Edited July 8, 2014 by staySICK
CorgiShinobi
I had a Wishbone plush I got through a school book order. Honestly, seeing classical stories in live action with a dog as the lead character had this weird appeal to it. What's the story Wishbone? (Now I'm watching these old-ass TV themes this morning...)
staySICK
the town I lived in didn't get cable until had moved back to the city so, 6th, 7th grade ('95-ish). From 2nd to 5th grade (except when I was displaced) I had PBS and whatever over the air channels we could pick up, except when I'd visit my Mom. edit: and talking about the technology, I remember in high school I was living with an aunt and she'd get mad that when I went out with friends she had no way of contacting me because we'd go from place to place, typically all public places with no real phone line to call. (she was paranoid. like super paranoid) Cell phones were in their infancy / super expensive, and pagers were still slightly a thing, so I suggested me getting a pager. She said no because of the "stigma" (drug dealers) associated with them. Edited July 8, 2014 by staySICK
CorgiShinobi
My first cellphone was an indestructible monochrome Nokia and it did two things: make phone calls and play Snake II.
