You know if you take away all the textures of a level in a game? So everything's just like a grey placeholder colour, and it's really obvious that everything in the game, underneath, is just like grey, flat surfaces cleverly slotted together to shape real things? That's level geometry.

Geometry just means like the base skeleton of the world which your character can bump into / walk on / see. Like, y'know, the grey rock behind everything in the real world that we call geometry in real life!

My issue is that a lot of the time they mean level design. They'll say something like 'that area in Bloodborne requires you to be carefully aware of the level geometry', when they really mean, 'that are in Bloodborne requires you to be carefully aware of the level design/layout'.

If you were actually being aware of the level geometry itself, you would be standing still, thinking about it, bored out of your mind.

"Geometry" in games is basically the polygons that make up the models.  Level geometry is that for the models that are actually part of the level itself (rather than characters, enemies, vehicles, etc).

You often find that a term gets picked up by a couple of people and then explodes. One annoying recent one for me was (for obvious reasons): Netcode. As in "Fix the netcode DICE." By which people often meant, "I have latency issues when playing against West Coast Americans from the UK, please fix the laws of physics."

An article TN linked to me, which I've read from elsewhere, just did that damned level geometry thing! Goddamnit! In this (rather good) article here, the incorrigible Tim Rogers says:

The Level Geometry

The second of Bloodborne (and the Souls games') three tent poles is the level design.

The level design in these games is excellent.

Note that he says geometry then immediately says level design afterwards.

They are not the same thing. He even says stuff like 'The geometry is more than "masterful": it's alive.' I mean, come on

Yes, it is irritating when the buzzword thing happens. That netcode example is a good one, too.

I don't know if anyone here is like this, but for years now I have decided that aside from this forum, I won't get into lengthy discussions/arguments about anything. I used to do that all the time and honestly, it's never worth it.

There's only two things that are ever talked about on forums - if one thing is better than another, or circle jerking about something people like. Both are kind of pointless.

I just read stuff now. Which is weird because many people use the Internet solely to voice their opinions. My generation is probably the first that grew up with the Internet, and for all purposes, I have already outgrown it. I learned too quickly how it works. That's weird.

So, I don't know the full story, and maybe he just figured it was time to step away (he did sound a little burned out), but Joss Whedon deleted his Twitter account.

However, what can be seen in relation to the incident is an ugly strain of "progressive" people that were sending criticism (labelling him racist, sexist, transphobic; the whole list) and just general harassment his way. And that bothers me. It's nowhere near the level of GG bullying, etc. but it's sad to see such mob mentality and people being judged as not the "right kind" of progressive. And I checked out some of these accounts, who seem to really love characters and these fictional worlds (these are the sorts of people making weird tumblrs and shipping characters, etc.) so it's also disturbing to see such hate and mindless aggression.

Maybe this is partially related to my thoughts on the Charlie Hebdo racism claims, in that there are people misinterpreting things (not to mansplain things but she refers to herself as a monster because of the "killing" part. Did everyone forget the "red on my ledger" thing from the first Avengers film?).

Also, that reminds me. Fuck open letters.

Yeah, folks say now n then about how stupid it is that "SJW" is used as an insult, but then you have the folks that take the extreme on everything.

It almost feels like folks are purposefully misinterpreting just to get the rage machine going. Someone just has to go "this movie is problematic" and poof a little army appears to tear apart whoever you point at.

In the big thing folks are tearing apart Hulk had just torn apart a fair chunk of a city, so he's feeling pretty terrible n bad, and Natasha is trying to relate to him in that she's pretty much built as a killer, they're both "monsters". But obviously she's calling herself a monster cos she's infertile and not cos of the cold war assassin thing, that's hunky-dory.

Hawk-eys girlfriend is a farmwife with kids, rather than a member of the team, and Scarlet Witch is....the prime instigator of the films plot points and I'd think folks are gonna have a real hard time trying to pick her role apart as being sexist.

It's obviously a thinly veiled reference to the sexist stereotype that women are manipulative and trick men to get what they want.

Does anyone else have female friends on Facebook who post a picture of themselves pretty much every other day? Im depressed so theres a lot of things about people i dont understand, but wanting to see yourself so much seems like the signs of dementia. It's just crazy.

And this is probably sexist(it is), but I always found it funny that girls will put tons of pictures of themselves up on Facebook, yet they refuse to show themselves on forums. I suppose because on FB youre surrounded by friends and youll get tons of "likes" from them, yet anonymous people on forums can tear you apart. I just think if you think youre attractive, you should own it. So many girls seem to be modest about it, yet when they post a picture up, theyre almost always at least cute and people will compliment them about it.

Or maybe my standards are low. That could be it.

I always read the XD that people type at the end of their sentence fragments just as the letters and not as any type of emote. Of all the silly faces, acronyms and other internet shorthand for some reason this bothers me the most. If we've found a lazier version of "lol" I think this would be it.

Yes.  And, for the most part, they both have emotional issues.  That's why I quit using FB a long time ago.  My email keeps tellling me I have messages on FB, too.  I don't care.  I'm avoiding the crazies and their daily affirmations.

I have a friend who writes it as DX. And it always confuses me. What's DX got to do with anything?

Oh and the Google+ thing I think they've calmed down a bit about that. It used to ask me constantly on YouTube. Then only when I login. Then I think now it doesn't ask me at all. What kinda annoys me now are those that use a Google+ login, instead of a Google login. I'm afraid of clicking it since I don't want to go and delete me G+ account again.
