Mister Jack
I contemplated putting this in Angry Thread, but the underlying issue is a pet peeve. Recently had a friend get harassed because he didn't put a rainbow overlay on his profile picture. Some very "open-minded and tolerant" people got angry at him and thought they found out he has been a homophobe all this time. I know the guy and he doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He has also used cartoon screenshots as his profile pic for over a year, so when he says he doesn't care about his profile pic, I believe him. Hell, I haven't changed my profile pic in over two years. Not everyone changes their profile pic for every occasion, even for a cause they believe in. TL;DR Don't be a little shit thinking you know someone from a profile pic. On that note I find it annoying when people think their profile pictures are worth anything more than what it provides for their own personal amusement. Remember back when everyone on Facebook changed their profile pictures to cartoon characters to "raise awareness" of child abuse? deanb
Eh. Having worked with a bunch of e-commerce clients it's usually "I want my site to have a zoom, like you see on Amazon!"...then they never supply hi-res images. Usually the same images they've had for years on their old site.

Mister Jack
I really can't stand seeing all these cringeworthy internet "jokes" being made by people who think certain words are inherently funny. You know, words like the following: Taco Squirrel Monkey Penguin Spork Doom Banana Chimichanga I blame Invader Zim for starting this shit. Mr. GOH!
People have had fixations on funny-sounding words since time immemorial, so blaming Invader Zim seems odd to me. I mean, Bugs Bunny was making those sorts of jokes in the 30s. Edited September 30, 2015 by Mr. GOH!
Mister Jack
Because it's these words specifically that annoy the crap out of me, many of them being words that were used constantly in Invader Zim, and ever since then edgy kids try (and fail) to utilize this same kind of humor to appear quirky or something. Am I seriously the only person who has ever encountered this? Because it feels like it's fucking everywhere.

TheMightyEthan
Hmm, this might be the first time that the answer to a "am I the only one...?" question is "yes".
Mal
I was like those people who MJ hates... back in middle school to high school. So at least 8-10 years ago. So around the time Invader Zim and my then demographics crossed. I bet a good deal of people I know now were like that at some point too but we grown out of it. I don't even recall the MLP:FiM group I was part of even saying those kind of words to be funny and they are the closest group of people I know/knew who would say that sort of thing. TheFlyingGerbil
so many american recipes look lush but then call for a box cake mix/brownie mix. If I;m making something nice I want to make it properly from scratch not with some weird box of junk. it's really annoying as it's another step to work out how to make from scratch and means you can't just save the recipe as is. TheMightyEthan
What really bugs me is when recipes say "1 can of Brand X whatever" without saying the size or anything, because sometimes the sizes of stuff like that changes.
deanb
Apart from the Be-Ro recipe books calling for Be-Ro flour I don't think I've ever seen recipes call for specific brands. Maybe it's a English vs English thing? (I tend to avoid American recipes cos they use cups)
TheMightyEthan
Usually I ignore the brand part of it, because you can find other brands of the same thing, but I think it does largely originate from somebody's grandma writing down the cheese dip recipe off the Rotel can in 1957, and it just getting passed down still calling for Rotel and Velveeta. I forgot about that. The worst is 'one pack of oreos'. I mean even in the UK they sell those in multiple pack sizes and you know they're going to be different (smaller) to the US sizes. Nearly as bad as measuring biscuits in cups. How the heck do you measure biscuits in cups, if you flat out refuse to use weights just put 10 biscuits or whatever it is. Edit: just wondering, do packs in the us have cup sizes on them? Ours are all in grams so if recipe says 2 cups of chocolate or 2 cups of blueberries how do you know how much to buy? TheMightyEthan
Typically stuff here is only listed in cups if it's something that's straightforward to measure that way (liquids, flour, sugar, etc), other stuff is listed by weight, usually ounces. deanb
Ah, flour. The big reason not to use the American cup system.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, actually after I said that I realized pretty much everything other than liquids is sold by weight, including flour. It's just in recipes that flour is by volume. Although if you're measuring right you should be measuring fluffed flour instead of packed flour, so it's not an issue. Mal
It's becoming a thing where baking recipes are going by weight now. I cannot do it any other way. Unless the scale is uncalibrated, you cannot get the weight wrong. Oddly, stuff that are measured by -spoons are still done so.
Mr. GOH!
Yeah, American recipes that are not put together by doofuses assume you fluff the flour first. The name-brand-in-a-recipe thing is a sure sign you got a recipe promoted by a brand at some point. All sorts of prepared/semi-prepared food brands (like oreos, cake mixes, and so on) have published cookbooks and loads of recipes for over a century and it was very popular in the 50s and 60s too cook with such recipes. I avoid most such recipes unless they are for a dessert or you know and trust the author. If it's a recipe from a random internet site, find a different one. deanb
These not a thing in US? Turns out even the kiddie stuff is even regulated on size over here. I was baking and suddenly" ah crap need a spoon for the vanilla". Ask little sister and she pulls out a set of spoons in pink heart shapes, clearly meant for kids, but each is properly marked and sized. But we make sure a pint is a pint so maybe the spoons is pretty OTT compared to other places.
Mr. GOH!
Yes, we use the same measuring spoons here in the US of A. We have three or four different sets in our kitchen at home.
