TheMightyEthan
No, we have spoons like that. I think he was just saying that even recipes that have switched to weight for big measurements still use volume (spoons) for little ones. TheFlyingGerbil
I guess most scales can't weigh out something as small as half a teaspoon of spice more accurately than an actual spoon.
deanb
i dunno, the pawn shops near me all sell these tiny little scales that can do gram measurements. No idea why pawn shops would scale baking equipment though.

deanb
Why would you bake with drugs ethan? What recipes are you reading? 2 eggs 200g of flour 300g of sugar 100ml of milk 18g of MDMA Mix ingredients, put in oven for 20 minutes, decorate and here's one we made earlier following Richard Bacons recipe:

Eleven
Disqus. Â Nothing against the platform, it's actually quite cool that a comments platform allows for a profile to be used with multiple sites, but every time I see it now, I roll my eyes before even reading a single comment. Removing the barrier of registering for an account (and actually having them already logged in, ready to fire a comment away) really attracts those who posts things without giving it a second of thought. Eleven
I kinda signed up on tumblr because I keep ending up in there and maybe I should follow some of those blogs that have kind of cool content. Â However holy crap is there a way to turn off those recommended blogs/posts? It's like every 2 posts there's a recommended blog. What the fuck is that about. Drives me crazy, I'm not the target audience of tumblr I guess, but I just wanna follow a few blogs...

It's an extension that's been pretty great in the past.  Speaking of tumblr, I love the basic idea of it, but good lord has that platform gone down the tube in the last few years. I hate to go 'Way Back When', but I joined that site in 2010 and it was fantastic, when did it get overrun by 14 year olds doing their best to be offended by everything?
deanb
I kinda like the recommended blogs, usually leads to stuff I like. Â But yeah, no idea where the whole "tumblr = SJW" trope came from.
TheFlyingGerbil
I can't say I love tumblr but it's something to scroll through when I'm bored. Had a recent spate of spam followers but that seems to have died down now. To me it seems easy enough to avoid the drama but then I tend to keep myself to myself
CorgiShinobi
I attempted to be a part of Tumblr, and this was a few months ago. The thing that put me off was the hyper-sensitivity and the young teens who obviously know what's best for humanity, thus they must spam tags with utter nonsense "because I'm right." Eleven
I started flagging recommendations as inappropriate, I wonder how long it'll take before I get banned for abuse or something. It does make me feel better though. Also learned that tumblr kind of chased away the person who made the awesome extension of removing these annoyances. Oops.   Edit:  So I tried a bunch of extensions but this is the one that can get rid of the recommended posts.  https://userstyles.org/styles/101226/tumblr-hide-recommended-posts-on-dashboard  I can now browse my dashboard in peace. CorgiShinobi
This has been something on my mind lately, and truthfully I feel this is the only place I can post about it without it turning into a maelstrom of millennial bickering. Â The topic of privilege. Â Today I witnessed two white early 20-something individuals arguing about how bad black people have it. I'm not sure if they know anyone black, and if they do if they truly believe they've had a better life than them because of race. The conversation took this cringe-inducing turn when one of them began self-loathing herself simply because she is white. Â Maybe it's because of the generalities, i.e. white and black people, but I hate this kind of talk and train of thought. To me, it's thinly veiled racism and now we have a modern reboot of The White Man's Burden. It's good to understand the blessings and privileges one has been given; it's how we can come to a state of humility and understanding. Â But just assuming that one's classmate, who is black, is having a tougher time than you, who is white, is racist. Sure you're not looking at them through a lens of hatred, but having a sense of pity for them based only by the color of their skin? Not everyone who is black grew up on the street, just like not everyone who is white grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth. Â I don't particular like this analogy, but I'm reminded of that episode of American Dad where Stan assumes his half-brother, Rusty, who is Native American, will be impressed by all his upper-middle class luxuries. Later in the episode, turns out Rusty is a millionaire and Stan and his family were the "poor family" at Thanksgiving. Â I know this was a big rant. It just gets under my skin because I'm imagining people my age unintentionally teaching their kids racism. Don't bring your new toy to school, it'll make the underprivileged kids depressed! Don't be too proud of your grades, the races that are stereotyped to do poorly in school would be dissuaded to do better!
TheMightyEthan
Generally speaking non-white people in the US are disadvantaged compared to white people. That does not, however, apply universally to every individual who falls into those categories. It is good to acknowledge the systemic problems in our society and try to do what you can to help the situation, but you should also recognize that individuals are individuals and not make assumptions about their specific experiences based on generalities.
deanb
Yeah I think the above is part of where MRA and similar groups come from. They're being told, by folks like your above examples, that by default they've had a good life but for many of them it's not true. It creates a push back and disillusionment that gets funnelled out as hate and abuse. Â Too many folks simplify it though, cos really it should be "broadly speaking this generalised group is worse off than this other group" rather than just "whites have more privilege than blacks". The self loathing you see now n then is also pretty shitty too, and the whole "check your privilege" though most of that seems to be kept to Tumblr folk (no idea how that's all shaken out tbh, you guys see the kind of things I get on Tumblr )
Popular Post Thursday Next
Â The topic of privilege. Â Â It's not just about grades, or being born on a wealthy suburb vs being born in a ghetto. It's all the other stuff, like people double checking that they've zipped their bag when a black person sits near them on the train. It's knowing that if you go for a job interview it's not enough to be qualified, you also have to have the right accent because there is an assumption that people who "sound black" are less intelligent. Â None of this means that white people should hate themselves as individuals, or that a white person should pity a black person. "Checking your privilege" is more about trying to think before you speak/judge. Is the situation that person finds themself in because of their actions? Because of their race? Â Another example. I have (slightly distant) relatives who are mixed race. They hate the police, and any interaction with them is almost always tinged with confrontation. Before I go wading in and say "Well if you didn't act so confrontational the police would be fine with you." I have to stop and think that I've never been shooed away from an area by the police because "I look like I might be causing trouble", I've never been "stop and searched" let alone had it happen three times in the same day while shopping round London. Â All of these things are because of their race and over time have contributed to a relationship with the police that is tinged with distrust on both sides, before a word has even been spoken. Â That doesn't mean that I feel pity for them, it just means that rather than tell them how to behave I check my privilege and understand that their behaviour is a product of their experience that I will never have because I'm lucky enough to be born white. Â The result of "checking your privilege" in general should not be to feel pity, it should rather be your cue to either be supportive, or butt out.
Mister Jack
Every website should have a dark theme. Â Looking at all this empty white space on a larger display hurts my damn eyes.

Eleven
Slightly related: Â So I recently installed Office 2016 again and started seeing this tips when you start it up. I ran Excel and the first thing it said was "Due to popular demand, we now have a dark mode!". So, cool, I said, and went into the options and chose dark mode. Â Well, the menus were dark but each of the cells that use about 85% of the screen is still blindingly white... It actually hurts my eyes more having such contrasting colors in 1 window.

Mr. GOH!
I hate it when I'm watching a video of a TV show online on a TV channel's website and having to watch the same unskippable commercial multiple times in a row for every commercial break.
