excaliburps
Hey! This post is going to be self-grandizing. Yep. I admit it. So please don't trash me or fill the thread with hate posts. Reason I'm posting is aside from contributing for a Battlefield site, I just got a news contributor job for a videogame website. I work at home so I don't see this being too much of a problem time management-wise. I don't want to name the site just yet. They are a pretty big network. I will act as a news contributor/Asian correspondent of sorts. Funny thing is the EIC actually emailed me this: "Covering the Asian gaming scene would be awesome. None of that random Japanese culture crap Bashcraft does on Kotaku, now. As long as it's actually gaming-related and entertaining/informative for our readers, I'm good with it." I actually laughed when I read that. Anyway, what sort of topics would you guys be interested in seeing? My US Military article will most probably be hosted by them. I will link it of course. Oh, and as for support, the site does need hits to make money. And those hits are somewhat connected to my pay...In short, drop by there you scoundrels! They also let people comment on articles and whatnot. I'll post the name of the site once I review the policy and see how it is first. Yep. I may be a pompous tool, but you guys kinda know me. So I'm your pompous tool.
Strangelove
Do the exact opposite of what ashcraft does and you should be fine. Also as far as reading articles on big websites, keep your douchey opinions to yourself, dont be a plunkett. While some might agree with your opinion and i think its great for writers to have a personal opinion on things, keep the flamebait at a minimum.
Mal
Yeah, don't be like Ashcraft and the other writers who runs with anything remotely related to video games. If you want to voice some flamebait-ish comment, I would suggest a personal blog for that. Just keep your work stuff and personal stuff separate. excel_excel
Thats the thing though Strange, flamebait sells, so hopefully this website it good enough that it doesn't need that crap. Anyway congrats burps! (can I call you burps? course I can ) I'd interested in seeing maybe articles about the difference to how eastern and western gamers approach games, also it'd be nice to hear how well FPS's are accepted over there by the gamers that do buy them. TheForgetfulBrain
Ohh, spiffy - congrats, Excaliburps! What is the site, can you tell us/link us yet? Edited February 24, 2011 by TheForgetfulBrain
deanb
I'm not always agreeing with his style but the stuff he covers, specifically here http://gamejournos.com/tagged/not_shit_journalism , is pretty good to keep track on and keep yourself in check. 1. Cover games. If you're having to think more than a split second on how it's VG related, don't write it. 2. Stop n think a bit if it looks like you're marketing the game. If the words "this game looks kick ass and you should all buy it" or similar leave your virtual lips, the A1 is that way. 3. Fuck publisher relations, ask awkward questions. 4. Write about what interests you(rule #1 at PXOD). If you don't care you don't put heart into it and it comes across to the reader. If the writer doesn't care for what they're writing, why should the readers? 5. Reply to comments, engage with the readership. Don't respond to trolls. 6. The rest of the rules are after the jump 7. WHAT FUCKING JUMP IT'S A WEBSITE!?!?!?! 8. Yeah don't do rule 6. 9. Make sure fact and opinion are obviously differentiated (start stuff with "I think" "I hope" "In my opinion" etc) 10. Do what feels right.

Also as far as reading articles on big websites, keep your douchey opinions to yourself, dont be a plunkett. While some might agree with your opinion and i think its great for writers to have a personal opinion on things, keep the flamebait at a minimum. Haha! You mean NOT post about Idol things? I might not be able to help it to be opinionated. Although I'll make sure it's not Plunkett's style of jerkiness. I do know flamebaiting gets a ton of hits. I also know that I don't want to be that guy. Yeah, don't be like Ashcraft and the other writers who runs with anything remotely related to video games. If you want to voice some flamebait-ish comment, I would suggest a personal blog for that. Just keep your work stuff and personal stuff separate. Noted. I doubt the editor would let me run that as well even if I wanted to. Yeah. That's what I mean. I assume that Plunkett does that sometimes just for the hits. I'm not going to be doing that of course. Haha! You can call me whatever you want! My first article will be about that Military thing. Then, might be about the piracy issue here. Oh, FPS' are very big here. Yeah. Difference between Eastern and Western gaming is a good subject. Although it might be a bit controversial. Ohh, spiffy - congrats, Excaliburps! What is the site, can you tell us/link us yet? I just woke up. I'll review the site first. I really want to tell you guys what the site is so you can see it, and tell me what you think. I'm technically hired (I think) but I don't want to jump the gun until I make my fist official post. Either I hate it, or I like too much which will askew any objectivity from whatever it is I write. 3) Haha! I will try. I know Jaffe can handle it. But some people don't want to reply that much unless it's a fluff piece for whatever game they're making. 4) Excellent point. Only problem with that is we have a quote per day. 5) I will! I hope some of you guys can drop by from time to time as well. 6-8] Haha! I take it you don't like the term "Jump" when people want you to click through? 9) Noted. 10) If only things were always that easy... Congratulations! But one tip is: do not space things like you did in that post. Haha! I know! I also know that my grammar, sentence structure, etc. Will be dissected and be mauled by people. They did say they'll help me out regarding this if any problems arises. Congrats, that is some pretty cool news. Joe Thanks! Congrats! I look forward to reading your articles. Sooooo, now that you're an insider, are you gonna give us all the juicy gossip? Thanks, man! Haha! Hmm...I think I'll try to skirt around it if I can! Proofread. Spell-check is your friend. And congratulations! Thanks! I agree! I rely on that spell-checker more than I care to admit! Now, is there a punctuation, sentence checker? excaliburps
Ok. Replying here as that was one long-ass post. Thanks for all the support, guys. I was kinda expecting some hate posts or something to be honest. Also, they are asking me for my photo! I get that they're going to be using my real name, but photo? Damn! Not that I look like Quasimodo or anything, but I like that anonymity. I really appreciate all the tips and support you guys are doling out. I'm in a "strike the iron while it's hot" mood seeing as Kotaku is slowly becoming Denton's own personal gaming lab rat for advertising. I mean all those that jumped ship have to dock somewhere, right?
Cyber Rat
Now, is there a punctuation, sentence checker? Just use as much commas as possible, and when someone calls you out on it, say you're doing a Christopher Walken impression.

excaliburps
Lol! I take it when I post something you guys will rip me to shred because of grammar mistakes, etc. Anyway, being a news poster means regurgitating news you get from somewhere else. Aside from the press release of course. I do know a couple of sites to go to but care to recommend any? Also, it's very tempting to post rumors or other hearsay. N4G comes to mind. What I don't want is posting something and having to constantly edit, delete it because of the content. Whatcha think? Don't post news until it's confirmed, or at the very least, has basis. Or post rumors, things you hear? Some people like it for the added hits, etc. Me? I just want to post the news as quick as possible for relevancy. deanb
I'd take it as a judgement call. The reliability of the site with the rumour, how possible it is, the evidence given. If you know the source directly, go right ahead.

Most game journos these days are lurkers on Gaf. It would be smart I guess in a way to join the site and discuss and do articles too. Since sometimes some of the members do some insane amount of digging up to find info about games they may or may not like. And they have a fair number on there as well who write for press. peteer01
Excaliburps, congrats! That is some awesome news, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about the gig when you can share more about it. (Oh-oh, just realize we might all figure out your real name and know what you look like!) Also, I saw a pretty Japanese girl on the train yesterday playing a DS. Would you like me to take a picture of one next time I see that? You can write an article about attractive Japanese women, and then tie that into gaming with the photo! What? Yeah. I actually lurk there from time to time. Although you can't get an account approved as of the moment. Not that I want to comment there to be honest. Some of 'em are not that nice to put it lightly. I'm not going to be covering the usual press release as they have people doing that who are in the US. Excaliburps, congrats! I honestly hope some of you guys will comment there and whatnot. Would really mean a lot to me to see familiar faces there. Oh, as for your observation about me real name and all, yep! just told my wife about it the other day and I am kinda freaking out about it. It's one thing to dissect and make fun of my posts, but me? Haha! My god! Then again, I'm Asian. And we all look alike as some people say. Haha! Haha! Take a pic of the girl. If she's playing a game, while yes. That's news! If she's playing a game and she's pretty? That merits two different news posts! Haha! Kinda sad that we all know who and what that comment of yours meant. excaliburps
Oh, and I talked to the EIC. He gave me the go signal. Site is http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/ Owned by the Vgchartz network. Anyone here familiar with it? Thoughts? And yep. Military article will be hosted by 'em I expect. I did tell the EIC that I am telling some of the Kotaku community about it. Hopefully, some of the people jumping ship will have this and that site for news. I don't know anyone from that site. Just the EIC whom I've exchanged emails with. Other than that, no idea where, who, what they are. I do know Vgcharz though.
