What do you guys know of the site and its community? I'm actually going to be posting this week! Studying the posting system, etc. @Battra92: Haha! And I am touched! excaliburps
Ok. I just made my first two news post! I think it's going to be live either later, or tomorrow. Nothing big mind you. Just something to get the cobwebs out and adapt to the site's posting format. Which I painstakingly did with an editor guiding me somewhat. Good? I can be opinionated but not too much. Bad? Word counts! Haaaay! Word count and image sourcing! Friggin' annoying. I'll post my first post here. And yep. It will be by my real name. So be gentle with the flaming. Also have to do a BIO of some sorts so that the site will put it up. And a pic! Fuck! Do not like that. I'm thinking of using an unknown actor's pic and passing that off as me. Will anyone know? Haha! Also got a few tidbits about kotaku that I want to share, but I don't want to get into trouble... (You're probably one of the most active Kotaku posters on TAY board.) Too many. I mean It's alright for normal pieces, but for cut and dry linking news? You have to fill it out. Although I do get why we need to do it. Doesn't make it easier. You mean one of the most active here? Or in Kotaku's TAY? Haha! I'm debating with myself if I should PM you. Nothing too major, but I haven't told the site I post here. Don't intend to actually. Thinking if I would get into trouble if someone reads what I say. As I say a lot! I meant to say that out of the people hear on this (TAY) board, you are one of the most active commenters at Kotaku. Haha! I'm debating with myself if I should PM you. Nothing too major, but I haven't told the site I post here. Don't intend to actually. Thinking if I would get into trouble if someone reads what I say. As I say a lot! I can keep my mouth shut, but I can also understand you not wanting to have something in writing that you don't want getting out. I'm one of the people here that still has a star at Kotaku that wants to keep it, even though I only access it from the one PC I set up so that it redirects every page to ca.kotaku. (Even then, when I do head back, it's really sad how the quality, and quantity, of commenters has fallen. ) Edited February 28, 2011 by peteer01

I meant to say that out of the people hear on this (TAY) board, you are one of the most active commenters at Kotaku. Ah! Yeah. Not as prolific now though. I rarely even read the comments these past few days. Not commenting as much as well. The community is slowing turning like IGN or something. I find that I'm commenting here more and more. Although I do think my recent employment with gamrFeed has something to do with it as well. I mean it wouldn't look good if I browsed for stories in kotaku when I'm employed by the gamrFeed, no? Also, not to bash and to plug or anything. But gamrFeed, Dtoid, Vg247, etc. Does have newer news. Their posts are more recent. I find that Kotaku's news are almost always a couple of hours, if not days late. Aside from the odd editorial that they do. Which, lately hasn't been special or anything as well. Or is it just me? Oh, and you noticing I'm one of the most active, is that a good thing or a bad thing? That's one of the good things about working at home. I'm in front of the PC almost the whole day. Of course. it does look like I have no life. Haha! I'm debating with myself if I should PM you. Nothing too major, but I haven't told the site I post here. Don't intend to actually. I mean I appreciate that I have it and I haven't lost it or anything, but I'm more concerned with the lurkers here. And some might assume X person from VGChartz is talking shit about Kotaku or something. Or they might read what I have to say and the EIC might deem that info should have been private. Hmm...Let me think. I don't think it's that big of a deal, but I also don't want to be in hot water this soon. It's mostly about news/news crediting, etc. Oh, and of course Kotaku's weird obsession with posting non-gaming related stuff.

excaliburps
Oooh go on. I'm always up for a bit of kotaku gossip. (Though tbh it's probably something I already know ) Wahahaha! It's not something super juicy or something. Yeah. Either you guys know it, or it's widely assumed. Like Ashcraft stretching the term "games journalist" to its limits. Or that people think he takes living in Japan a bit too much. Not saying I agree or disagree. Just that a lot of people even those not going to Kotaku who feels the same way. Bottom line is reading a few things and observing a few things made me see bits of Kotaku in a different light.
excaliburps
Ok. Here it is! My first two posts! It went live exactly when I was sleeping! It was supposed to be three but one get deleted. Ah, well, can't win 'em all. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/84328/live-action-killzone-movie-watch-it-now/ I posted this the moment it became available. Shame it had to get approved and it stewed in news purgatory for more than 10 hours before it got posted. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/84349/flashback-creator-reveals-new-playstation-3-exclusive/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+gamrfeed+%28gamrFeed%29&utm_content=Twitter So, what do you guys think? I'm still grasping their system and writing method as it's a bit different from gaming blogs. More formal and re-wording is a must, etc. And yes. That's my real name. excaliburps
Man you're gonna be fucked if you ever get in a partnership. Co n Co Haha! Yeah. I get my fair share of ribbing when it comes to that. I kinda want to share my daughter's name but don't even want to think what you guys will do with it. Oh, and when you do visit the site, tell me what you think! Mostly about me as I don't have any control on what they post. Haha! I'm still learning the ropes. Their criteria is way higher than the normal blog I'm used to. Both a good thing and a bad thing. Good for readers, bad for writers.

deanb
Well I can say from running you guys in the News Feed for the past few days that as a whole, need to speed up just a smidgen. Like 2-5 hours. It's not much, but on the web that's an eternity. Though you said they have to be approved so maybe that slows the system down. But there are also stories in their that are a bit unique so that's always good.

Sigh. Unfortunately, you're right in your assumption. A ton of stories are queued up waiting to be published. At times they edit it for a long time and the news we post get old. Happened to me at least 3 times today. Visceral Studios job opening? Did a write-up right away. But got approved a couple of hours later. I expect things will be better once I get the hang of everything better and they trust me more. Need to post a ton of news for the $ to come in. Overall, they're a bunch of nice guys. Certainly way more professional than I expected. I also like the fact that they never ever want to steal someone's story and do not condone copying and pasting entire articles from someone else's post. We need to get a few choice sentences and link to the source so they'll get the hits. Classy, no?

excaliburps
Excaliburps, just saw one of your stories on the TAY Newsfeed. It's official, you've made it big. Haha! I highly, highly doubt that. What do you mean by TAY newsfeed? For someone who's into videogames I have no idea what that is or how it works. One of the articles I wrote was apparently linked by someone from Destructoid. At least that's what a commenter from Kotaku told me.

excaliburps
Oh, just wanted to say that I got another writing job! It's for a fairly known network that focuses on FPS, shooter games. I might even try reviewing or previewing a few games if the review copies come in. Not naming it yet as I'm not sure I'm allowed to. Still semi-official as we haven't disclosed some of the finer details, but if it goes through; I'll be writing full-time! Anyhoo, also wanted to talk about "games journalism" a term I kinda loathe. I do get that feeling of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. It does happen sometimes. I mean there are a couple of off-screen things happening that sometimes people are not privy to that angers some people, but not our intent. I'm saying this without actually sayingstuff which makes it doubly hard. I mean that sometimes writing for games isn't all that. A couple of things behind the scenes complicate things and it's shit. Yep as some people here know by now, I'm very opinionated in my posts. Whether it's right or wrong is a different topic altogether. I mean, not making excuses for some of Kotaku's fuck-ups but I do see where some of 'em came from. Now? I get the usual hate posts but I do get the "you're doing good" comments as well. Thing is, most readers say one thing and the other depending on the subject you posted on and what your opinion on it was. Same reason why other writers tell me it's sometimes best to let the commenters spew hate and whatnot and just not reply. I do reply to some but to those who ask intelligent questions or point out errors. But hate? Nah... Anyway, sorry if this sounded boring or too mellow. Just wanted to share and vent at the same time. Hard to do that when you can't actually say out loud what it is you really want to say. Edited March 26, 2011 by excaliburps
