Deus Ex

Deus Ex 2 assumed that JC Denton merged with Helios so screw you if you went another direction.

Well, if you picked any other ending than that, you're an idiot! :P

But seriously, didn't Invisible War take elements from all four of Deus Ex's endings and merged them all into its plot?

All in all it's a good game but I feel like its ties to the original story were very very loose. Then again I still can't keep everything straight in my head from the first game. The other problem with 4 endings is that the sequel is going to have to assume one of them so it really loses the point.

Deus Ex 2 assumed that JC Denton merged with Helios so screw you if you went another direction.

All four of them fit. And it was always a "may" when describing the outcomes.:

Sarif - augmentation research is allowed to go on uninhibited and 25 years down the line Nano-Augs are created.

Taggart - Restrictions on R&D are brought in, it slows down, but Megan is working on Nano-Augs with Illuminati/M12 n they're not exactly restricted.

Darrow - The truth is revealed, Illuminati are shunned, but given it's mainly M12 in next one, doesn't matter much. Mech Augs are shunned. Gunther doesn't like this.

Jensen - well nothing.

I think at first it wasn't meant to have any choices, hence the rather weak "push 4 buttons" thing. They don't really diverge too much either, probably to keep in line with the fact they can't have an ending where Augmentations are stopped completely.

Ad while I've not played IW, I was under the impression that it assumed all the endings were true.

If I remember correctly the 4 endings of the original were pretty exclusive. One was shut down helios and send the world into a new dark age but that would create freedom from augs and computers and such. The opposite being merge with helios and you discover at the very end of Invisible War, JC Denton had tried to merge with helios but it wasn't fully complete or something like that. That being said the 4 endings are rather weak. Seems a little pointless to me.

from wiki, the three endings to the original Deus Ex. Pretty obvious that the only one that happens is the third.

Tong seeks to plunge the world into a second Dark Age by destroying the global communications hub and preventing anyone from taking control of the world.[34] Everett offers Denton the chance to bring the Illuminati back to power by killing Bob Page and using the technology of Area 51 to rule the world with an invisible hand.[35] Helios wishes to merge with Denton and rule the world as a benevolent dictator with infinite knowledge and reason

EDIT: Well, they apparently said it was all three that caused the 3rd game but really it's more like the third choice was made by Denton but it didn't exactly work as planned. Sounds like marketing spin to me.

Just to address some comments near the top of the page: as I played the game, the more I found myself slipping into the role of Adam's character, and the more I found myself being willing to kill people. By the end, I was a one-man army of slaughterific proportions. I only let civilians live. Anyone with a gun died, and the more cruel their deaths, the better I felt.

I actually enjoyed the game MORE when I did that than when I used stealth.

And oh man, that ending. Spoilers incoming.

I didn't mind the "pick a button" ending nearly as much as I thought I would, but I ended up choosing to blow up the entire thing just because I had already run down that hallway and didn't really feel like running back to press any of the other buttons. Plus, seeing how I killed Sarif, Darrow, and Taggart when I found them earlier I didn't really feel like siding with one, because they were all dead... Quicksaved right before so I could see all the endings, though.

I also had way more trouble with the first 2 boss battles than the last 2. I only had to restart the Namir fight once, and I didn't die at all during the final encounter with the robots. I definitely don't regret buying the typhoon and dermal armor later in the game, but I still felt like the last 2 battles were much easier than the first 2, with or without augs that made them easier.

Either way, though, probably my favorite game of 2011. I liked Portal 2 a lot as well, but this felt a lot newer and fresh than Portal 2.

So Square Enix have filed a trademark for Deus Ex: Human Defiance.  Could be a sequel or whatever else (wasn't a movie project announced not too long ago?).

I really hope it's a game. Human Revolution got almost everything right and I would love to see Eidos Montreal expand on it.

The ending sequence of HR already hinted at stuff leading into the first game. I still think that Jensen's story has more than enough to tell another game so I'll be looking forward to this if it indeed is a sequel.

Heck to be completely honest I even hope they eventually remake/retell Deus Ex and Deus Ex 2. I'd love to play modern interpretations of those games.

But

Jensen died!

Seriously, though. The problem with a direct sequel is the same one that Invisible War faced: which ending is canon? IW was too indecisive and just included elements of all three, which undermines the whole point of player choice.

I'm not sure what I'd prefer, to be honest. All that comes to mind is Jensen's origins. Human Revolution vaguely hinted that he was special but never really expanded on it. I'd love for that to be addressed.

I don't need a prequel to a prequel. I need a sequel to the prequel that takes place before the first title (inorite?)

And I don't know about you but...

3 of the 4 or so possible endings don't have Jensen dying and the "red/green/blue" ending of HR wasn't exactly popular with people so I don't think many will care if they decide to go with Jensen being alive

but after you mentioned IW i got reminded that trying to find a middle-ground might end up being shitty so maybe it IS best to do a new story. Ugh. This is my problem with multiple choice endings. A character as awesome as Jensen may not get another game because of a design choice nobody really liked anyways (for the most part)

Oh, when I said explore Jensen's origins I didn't mean prequel. I meant more like Jensen looking into it a bit more. Obviously, that's not enough meat for an entire game. Just have it be more than a short side-quest. When those guys in suits started showing up in HR, I started getting excited because it gave a strong conspiracy vibe like the original. But once that quest ended, it was never brought up again. Which made me sad.

It's not a game, it's the film, I believe. I'm not sure how the dev team works, but I think a new Thief game is their next project.

I'm pretty sure Thief has been in development since before Human Revolution came out. They probably just added resources and shifted focus to it after HR shipped.

It would be awesome if it turns out to actually be a game. But I'm a bit skeptical considering this is kind of a weird, low-profile way of announcing.
