Yantelope
After being confused by the name and pronunciation of Deus Ex back in the day we looked it up and found out that it's in reference to a plot device ""god out of the machine". It's actually a bit annoying now because I see it in movies all the time. A great example was watching Avatar and the animals all come running out of nowhere to save the day and I'm thinking "Oh great, there's our Deus Ex Machina, thanks JC." deanb
I knew the term before I knew of the game. And yeah you see it a lot. Especially when you watch stuff like Dr Who
CorgiShinobi
Personally, I like saying "Deus Ex Machina." It's fun!
Yantelope
Yeah, we had a long discussion on whether is was Deuce Ex or Day-us Ex. I was saying it wrong.

Vargras
As for the actual game itself, they weren't kidding when they said ammo was harder to find - that only seems to apply to weapons you want to use or actually have, though. I tried to be non-lethal on my first mission, and ran out of tranq darts - and yet, I couldn't stop tripping over revolver and combat rifle ammo. Pirandello
Finally got my copy from the UPS guy. Holy crap, this game is amazing. That is all I have to say about it. However, the game is pretty jittery for me at times, lots of stuttering when I'm running around. Any way to fix that?

I usually only get that in hub areas, seems more or less like the game loading things. It's the only time I seem to get any disruptions in FPS. Yantelope
I was playing on PC last night for about an hour but didn't notice any stuttering at all. The game seems to run great. I will say that the Anti Aliasing seems to suck though. Tons of jaggies are everywhere. I hope they allow MSAA in the future. Anyone else here think it's funny that making a true sequel to a 10 year old game is so surprising? I'm actually really depressed by the fact that Deus Ex didn't start more of a revolution in gaming. Pirandello
Hmm, funniest thing happened today. So I'm at the part where you enter the Picus Communications building. At first, it was kind of annoying, there being lots of soldiers and all that. After a few floors and playing ninja, I noticed that they had some turrets set up. So I decided to steal those turrets, and brought them with me into the elevators I went down on (starting at the lift elevator and then onward). It was absolutely hilarious as the turrets mulched anything they had in their sights. So when I entered a new area, I just dropped the turrets into a nice open area with line of sight and let them do all the work. Essentially, I cleared over 3-4 floors' worth of soldiers and sentry robots without having to do anything myself. That was awesome. The boss battle with the dual-wielding bitch was annoying, though. Really. Damn. Annoying. I wish I could have brought in my turrets with me. Would have made it a lot easier.

That same level, where you have to wait for the elevator and defend yourself? I piled vending machines in front of the doorways, and a gas mine at each doorway if they somehow got through. They didn't. I looked at my minimap, and all the soldiers were stuck behind the vending machines and couldn't get past them. Easiest "Defend until X arrives" fight of my life. I even had the sentry reprogrammed too, but I didn't need it at all. Edited August 25, 2011 by Vargras

Yeah, for that part, I just simply put the two turrets in front of the stairs right next to each other. 99% of the soldiers were mulched as they came through the doors. I say 99% because there was one who cloaked. It was my first encounter with a cloaked enemy, actually, so I didn't realize it was a cloaked guy until I scored a headshot because he had been firing at me while I was looking out of cover and wondering why the air was firing at me. When the lift arrived, I then proceeded to bring the two turrets with me. The next area was absolutely hilarious to play around with the turrets. Nice big, long hallway. One way in, lots of dead bodies. Oh, and my preferred weapon is my 10mm Pistol. Silenced, damage and reload upgraded with AP modification. It pops helmets like balloons. I like playing it quiet and stealthy.
Yantelope
Looks like quad core processors are finally becoming necessary. I'm glad to see devs are utilizing all those cores now. It's also surprising to me just how minor the differences are between DX9 and DX11. It's a little disappointing really. deanb
Until next gen comes across you're not going to see much effort put into utilising DX11 features when most games are made for DX9-level consoles. I don't particularly blame devs for not wanting to. The returns on putting proper effort into utilising DX11, while keeping the DX9 version as well, would not be worth it. Hot Heart
Hurray. My copy is here. But I can't play it until tomorrow. I wonder how the Americans and pirates are enjoying it. Edited August 25, 2011 by Hot Heart

It pops helmets like balloons. I like playing it quiet and stealthy. Yeah, the 10mm becomes (dare I say it?) somewhat overpowered once you pick up the armor-piercing upgrade. I tend to play stealthy as well - typically carry the tranq gun, 10mm, combat rifle, crossbow, and heavy rifle with me. 10mm and combat rifle both have silencers on them (10mm is by far my most used weapon). Yantelope
In the original Deus Ex the pistol was super powerful when fully upgraded.
Vargras
In the original Deus Ex the pistol was super powerful when fully upgraded. You have access to both a revolver and the 10mm, but I've stuck with the 10mm since I'm trying to be all stealthy.
Yantelope
I'm trying to decide whether to be all humane or not. I'm beginning to think this is going to be more fun just killing everyone. I didn't used to care about shooting every bad guy in the head in games but it seems to often these days you get punished for it.

I noticed. I also had the Longsword SSR for a while (since I pre-ordered), but later on in the game, it practically becomes useless as the whole point of having a sniper rifle is a insta-kill headshot, which it can't even do against most enemies like Belltower and the likes. I swapped it out for the standard sniper rifle and it works much better now. I also carry a silenced combat rifle and a burst-fire-upgraded shotgun along with my pistol. Are there any AP mods for the combat rifle? It seems that'd be really useful since it's practically about the worst weapon context-wise, since every single weapon fits a certain situation and the combat rifle seems to fit none, unless throwing bullets at people became a viable combat option in HR. I've also happened upon the Heavy Rifle several times already, but the size and function of the weapon did not meet well with my playstyle, so I decided to ditch it. I wonder when I'll encounter the Plasma Gun (seeing as how I found ammunition for it already).
Yantelope
I just remember that in the original you could scope your pistol and zoom in and cap anyone even easier than if you were using a sniper rifle.

I ran into the oft-mentioned laser rifle and swapped my heavy gun for that (laser rifle can shoot through walls, lolol), and you eventually bump into the plasma gun. I'm nearing the end of the game, and holy hell do things quickly ramp up. I'm trying to decide whether to be all humane or not. I'm beginning to think this is going to be more fun just killing everyone. I didn't used to care about shooting every bad guy in the head in games but it seems to often these days you get punished for it. You don't really get "punished" for not being stealthy, but the game does give you bonuses if you are - point bonuses are given if you complete objectives without setting off alarms, or even for completing objectives without even being seen (and all this contributes to your experience bar). It doesn't take much to kill you either, so sometimes it pays if you be careful and take enemies out slowly.
