Jesus. I love my iPod and all (and I really do), but a dumb idea is a dumb idea no matter who came up with it.

Oh, I'm sure it'll sell just fine. Apple products always do nowadays, but as a concept? As an example of innovation? It's borderline shameful.

*Edit*

Regarding the argument that they're just trying to compete with the Kindle and Nexus and so on, I have two problems with that:

1) Kindle Fire is Amazon's only tablet (unless you count the earlier book readers, which I don't). Unless I'm mistaken, the Nexus is Google's first tablet as well. They have no history to improve on regarding tablets. Apple is a company that supposedly prides itself on being cutting edge, and making the ipad smaller is the best they could come up with? That's not new. That's not exciting. That's just a "me too" response, and I feel like Apple is sitting on its laurels when they're capable of doing more.

.

2) If this thing is supposed to compete with the Kindle and the Nexus, it's doing a shitty job. Why? The price. The Kindle and Nexus are appealing to people because they're affordable, at least as luxury electronics go. The ipad mini STARTS at $329. That's barely cheaper than the regular ipad. If Apple released the mini at $199 or something close to that, I might say its existence is justified. But $329? There's no excuse for that.

The iPhone 5 (and every iPhone before) competes with every top smartphone in the planet. With that price, it must be doing a shitty job, too. However, it still sells insanely well.

That's just how Apple "competes". The mini wouldn't sell out if it's doing a shitty job. You might not like it, but that's just how it is. You may say, it's an "iPad of course it will sell well", or "blind fanboys are the reason it sells well". Well, no matter what the reason is, it's doing a perfectly fine job competing.

I'm not a fanboy, I just really like Apple products (except the Mac!). I admit I cringe when I see Apple being mocked (like the youtube video above) because that's a product that I like. However I really don't mind it that much.

On the other concern: They still are cutting edge, with the 4th gen iPad. It's not as innovative as when the first iPhone (or iPad, or iPod) was released, but still THE killer tablet. I think the iPad mini was just something to fill up a hole in their lineup. I don't really mind it's not innovative, though the way they're describing it feels like it should be able to do more. I admit they're kinda way over their head with that.

However, the iPad 2 (which the mini's guts are made of) is still a very relevant device. While specs are for sure outdated, it can still compete head to head with the Nexus 7 (at least the benchmark scores say so). Of course when the Nexus 7 gets refreshed, that will change for sure.

Edit: lots of spelling mistakes there...

I noticed that too! While headlines still say they are selling out, they sure are worded differently (mentioning specific places etc. unlike just basically saying it sold out everywhere).

Of course it may be because there's 3 new ipads (well, the old new ipad is still new). But I think that's just me putting a little spin on things.

Also I mentioned Nexus 7 refresh. I remember reading about it being updated but looking at it now, it's just adding 3G i guess. Good that it's still not going to be as expensive (I think it's about a $100 more across the board). If the 16gb Wifi+3G model is the $299 one I'm reading about, then hell that looks really good.

If I have 10 bananas in stock and 30 oranges in stock and I sell 10 of each, my bananas are selling out. Never ever trust a press release that says that a product has sold out without giving any numbers. That's not an Apple thing either, someone on twitter saying similar of I think ..can't remember, it was a gaming device iirc.

The nexus 7 "refresh" was a simple case of upgrading the high ends model from 16GB to 32GB and making 16GB the new low end version. The price is the same (unless you get the old low end 8GB model on the cheap at clearance, but obviously that's not an official price or product any more)

Yeah, a brand-new product selling out doesn't mean anything without absolute sales numbers to go along with it. Apple and Nintendo especially both seem to be fond of making their first run about six units so they can go "look, we sold out worldwide!"

That was it, Wii U pre-orders.

edit: btw Apple have the new statement up on their UK site. And while they said it would take 2 weeks to put that statement up, it seems in less than 48hrs they can recode their UK front page so that it's always going to have the bottom section hidden off the monitor, regardless of size. You can easily see this by doing a Ctrl+scroll (or +/- keys) on the UK and US site.

http://www.apple.com/uk/

http://www.apple.com/

On the UK site the front page resizes everything so that until it's absolutely minute, it won't show the bottom of the page. Whereas on the US site it all resizes uniformly like a normal web page.

It's nearly Xmas, why are Apple wanting to piss off the judges so much in this. Getting a statement put on their website is the least they can do to Apple.

This is old, but new to me, since I never owned a Mac before. So Apple made their own SAMBA implementation for use in OS X Lion, which caused network file transfers (from Windows) of "large" files (300mb isn't large!) to fail. All the time! And is still isn't fixed in OS X Mountain Lion (if they even consider it broken). I was wondering why I couldn't transfer any file >300mb. Thankfully someone created this, and now all is well.

I'm a fan of their mobile gadgets, and I don't really mind proprietary stuff, but it should at least not be half-assed!

I thought I had to replace my wires, my wifi adapter, or my router due to this!

(Of course if you only use Mac, this is a non-issue. But having used one, I vastly prefer Windows 7/8, so it becomes a problem. But that's another issue...)

Apple's no longer the most valuable company in the world, despite record profits. I wonder if it will continue down hill? People are still buying obviously, but it does seem to have lost its lustre somewhat.

Fighting a rather public $1billion lawsuit with the largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world to prove that their (cheaper) phones are exactly like yours is maybe not the best idea in the long run. (though their iPhone/iPad sales are continuing to increase). Even without that it's inevitable as seen by their history with Macs(which did decrease). They make premium products at premium prices, own the market for a while then someone else comes along with a cheap OS and someone else with cheap h/w and hey presto they own 85-90% of the market and Apple shares the remaining amount with obscure platforms (in the case of phones Linux n Windows swap around positions).

Not to mention that single handedly the Galaxy S3 is selling almost as well as the iPhone, and that's not even Smasung's only product, let alone the only other competing Android smartphone. When a single Android phone is catching up with the iPhone that's not a good sign for Apple. Which is probably why there's so many rumors of them putting out a cheaper iPhone.

Lawsuit regarding IAPs. Didn't realise iOS didn't put a pin on IAPs, I know (annoyingly so) you need a password just to download free apps so bit of a weird reversal (Android the PIN is only on purchases, can download free stuff to hearts content PIN free)

iOS7 & OSX 10.9 (Mavericks)

Was pretty significant on the tech blogs.

edit: Also Macbook Airs with Haswell chips for insane battery life. 12 hours. Read The Verge's latest article on them if you don't believe me.

edit edit: Chips not cheaps. Though MBAs probably are the best deal in Ultrabooks.
