It may not seem like it, but Apple is performing a public service. They've created a fashion accessory where all you have to do is glance at a person's wrist to know what's up. If you see a 10,000 dollar watch there, you can say to yourself "Wow, that guy's a douche bag" and steer clear of him.

Rolex already beat them to it.

An expensive watch like a Rolex, Philippe Patek, Hublot, Omega, will retain it's price, and may well go up in value. It will always be relevant, and will be passed down through generations.

The Apple Watch 1 will be relevant for about 5 years, functional for up to ten and be worthless by the time you are ready to pass it on to your kids.

Douchebag logic in action.

So, I've been ignoring the Apple Watch and was going to ignore it but...

Holy shit. Its a fucking smart watch for crying out loud! It calibrates with a server. If it wants to be extra fancy, maybe it can calibrate by tuning in to a special radio frequency. Even then, even for an Apple tax, I'm not seeing even remotely a justification even if it is built like a tank to survive and work in the coming the decades.

Which part of this is "douchebag" logic? Expensive fashion watches remain expensive, just like any other item of jewellery. This means they can be considered a (not necessarily brilliant) investment and are often passed down as heirlooms. Expensive gadgets tumble in price until they are practically worthless except as the occasional museum piece.

I'm afraid it's just the standard logic being employed.

There's a school of thought, seemingly prevalent among in-the-trenches tech folks, that watches are only arbitrary signifiers of status without any inherent utility. The Apple Watch is even more egregious in that it represents an attempt by Apple to seduce otherwise-logical people into buying into the whole luxury watch as necessary and valuable status symbol.

Well given that everyone carries a cell phone with them now watches really do have very little inherent utility, it's just the difference in convenience between glancing at your wrist or pulling your phone out of your pocket to see the time.

I agree. I myself am somewhat chagrined at the prevalence of the watch as a status symbol in my own line of work, but that does not mean I will spend $3k on an acceptably fancy and fashionable watch. I also will not hate on men that like to accessorize so long as they don't judge me for not wearing a watch.

My other watch is a nice Casio solar powered thing which, as Mal has pointed out, is radio controlled. Always cool when you catch it resetting itself at midnight.

Not sure what I'll do when contract is up n I move on to a new phone (since my watch is very closely tied in with the phone). I guess I'd have to look around, though Android Wear as a development platform seems to have taken off and the circle watches are nice. Come end of year I imagine there will be sales on the older stuff, and new stuff out to boot.

So Apple introduced a few new things yesterday. Aside from the annual OS update they made some pretty "bold" moves.

Apple is a lot too late to some of these (Apple Music is going to have a tough time catching up to Spotify and Pandora), but I don't like to hate on someone trying to catch up in the market.

None of this excites me, but its all news worthy. Apple has created a market where apps are king, and then years and years later realized that everybody who made the apps are making the money. Naturally Apple is going to create their own apps to compete.

I bet in two years computers and phones are going to blow us away. Microsoft has stepped up their game, Google is working really hard to stay at the top, and it seems Apple has learned that they aren't the trend setter anymore.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/sep/10/apple-tv-ipad-pro-tim-cook

So Apple have in a shocker annoucned s versions of their current iPhone line-up in a move to astound everyone and their dog.

The bigger news is a new bigger iPad, the "iPad Pro" that is a ...now stop me if you've heard this one before, a professional orientated 12" tablet device with a keyboard cover and a "Pencil"  accessory to use alongside it. Total innovation. And because Apple are massive innovators rather than using a passive power form that most digitiser styli have such as Wacom n Note (which I think uses Wacoms tech) you have to charge it from the lighting port instead (so better hope you have a flat surface around to rest it on). The alternative method proposed was attaching a motor to Steve Jobs' grave.

Any creative types are likely to want something with much more potential than an iOS device can provide. They'll either already be using the Surface Pro (of which 4 is around the corner) which runs full blown Windows, or they're set up with a Wacom like most arty types.

After bringing out a large 6" phone, a smartwatch and now a stylus and 12" tablet I imagine they'll follow it up with an innovative curved screen next.

LOL. So much contempt in that post, Dean. They're just announcing whatever their latest version is the Apple way. They announce their products without any regard to whatever else exists in the market, it's nothing new. It's an "innovation" if you're using Apple, and that's really all their customers want and need.

See I will be of the "it is a digitser stylus hence the price" front. Which are much more accurate than just the rubber "replacement finger" types you can get from Poundland n other shitty shops (I've a wacom one cos I'm a knob)

I get that, but I also suspect that serious artists and graphics designers are still going to prefer using a dedicated graphics tablet with a PC or maybe even just a Windows tablet just because the software is bound to be more versatile on a Windows platform.
