Apple

He's more of an icon if anything is to be said. Public perception is that Steve Jobs is the magic Apple guru, but the truth is that really it: a perception.

Given that he has been regarded as one of the meanest CEO's in the business I doubt he will be missed much by his staff.

Hahaha, I watched Pirates of Silicon Valley a few days ago and the movie portrays him as quite the abusive asshole as a boss. I was actually wondering how much (if any) of it was true.

There's truth to it, but like Social Network, there's some exaggeration. Still, it's a great movie I recommend to a lot of people.

While on my way home from looking at places, on the radio I've heard some comparison of Jobs to Walt Disney in terms on how iconic they are.

I don't know, without Job's touch or at least the feeling of his touch, I wonder how long will it take for Apple to morph into something unexpected. Sort of like Disney, I suppose. They're kind of like everywhere...

Disney is one of the main reasons why copyright law is so awfully bad at the moment. I believe copyright now lasts about 70 years after the creators death, unless tied to a company in which case it lasts for pretty much forever. "The mickey mouse act". There's a video on it somewhere.

It's a rather fitting comparison considering Apple are currently using the courts to get their own way too.

Oh and Jobs had Pixar around long enough for them to start making movies and end up under Disney so I guess that's part of his possible legacy gone (I don't think many people know Jobs bought Pixar years n years ago)

Of course it is. Apple is the empire built on perception. Whether it's style, or ease of use or simplicity it's all in the eye of the beholder and that's why Jobs resignation makes me so interested to see whether the mystique of Apple will live past him.

Eh, probably.

Frankenstein lived (while short) after killing its creator, so what Apple appears to be now can exist for a long time. Of course, if Apple does something drastic, then they become some other beast that's "Wait, this is Apple?"

As for the Apple-Pixar relation, if anyone has watched the Pixar shorts compilation or the documentary (forgot the name), they should be aware of it.

Thing is Apple has been Jobless before and it didn't end well. (Microsoft had to invest in them in order to keep them afloat it was that bad). Apple as we know them now is only like this since Jobs was hired back on as CEO so a lot of folks will be thinking back to those Jobless years and how badly Apple did without him. Maybe Jobs has had this going for some years and has thus prepared Tim Cook as a suitable heir. But it's gonna be up in the air for a while on how this will pan out.

http://www.dailytech.com/Apple+Cries+About+Samsung+and+Motorolas+Patent+Monopoly/article22586.htm

In a scene straight out of Bizarro World, Apple, Inc.'s (AAPL) lawyers are crying foul about Samsung Electronics Comp., Ltd. (SEO:005930) and recent Google Inc. (GOOG) acquisitions Motorola's allegedly "anticompetitive" use of patents.

Apparently bits of the OS on that are leaking into other projects, but ultimately it came down to Allard n whoever was head of Win 8 being brought to Gates office n having a chat as Ballmer was concerned. Basically Courier wouldn't be a device that you could install Office, IE, Live Apps, etc on so it just wasn't part of Microsoft's plan. I think I posted a good article about it up here a few months back.

Aha! this seems to be it http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2011/11/killing-courier-the-right-decision-maybe-not-the-right-reasons.ars

Hmmmm...

So how is it the patent lasts until 2028? I thought these things expired after 10 years? Also, I'm curious how it's such a broad patent because I thought patents had to be somewhat specific. Still, if Apple did truly have a legitimate patent on multi-touch that sucks for everyone who isn't apple. Buy stock in apple now?

Yeah, patents aren't supposed to just be a general description of a solution to a problem, but rather a specific manner of solving it. The whole patent system is completely fucked as far as high tech devices go right now though.

Patents last 20 years, not 10.

Also, completely agree with Ethan. The patent system was originally brought in so that new inventions and discoveries, for example within medicine, would be shared with the world. The idea was that you couldn't protect your invention if you didn't patent it and when you patented it it became public knowledge, so that people could look at your ideas, build on them and come up with even better inventions / innovations.

Companies today have twisted the system so that instead of encouraging creativity and innovation it stifles it. The law should have been amended a long time ago with respect to technology patents. 20 years is far too long in the modern world. A 5 year monopoly max is what should be granted to Technology / Software patents.

If this patent is as essential to smartphones as is made out in the article then at the very least it should be reclassified as a FRAND patent and Apple should be forced to license it out on reasonable terms.

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/enterprise/374440/apple-blocks-dropbox-based-apps

Oh Apple. At first when hearing this I thought it was an issue to use the Dropbox SDK in apps because it's not approved or it circumvents some security feature or something. Nope Apple dislike the Dropbox SDK because it links folks to the dropbox site where folks can buy storage and Apple don't get a cut of it. They do know how web browsers and websites work right?

Apple's things is control over ecosystems. They want their customers to think that there isn't any way to do things besides their. So already, their customers aren't going to bother, but they might if it's made slightly easier for me.

It's stupid, but it falls into how anal/OCD Apple is about everything.

That's the thing that bewilders me about Apple. It's only successful because of the crazy eccentric OCD leader and his "my way or the highway" approach to everything. For some reason that appeals to people and I personally can't stand it.
