HotChops
So about a year ago my friend expressed interest in getting a cat. He certainly was a good candidate due to his loneliness and nearly-non-existent social life, but I also knew that he might not be able to live up to the responsibilities. So I spearheaded the matter. I made sure that he fully understood the responsibilities and potential hardships of having (and eventually losing) a pet. Once he found a kitten on Craigslist, I let him borrow my cat carrier and I gave him a list of important information including: nearby vets, necessary vaccinations, and low-cost (or free depending on the time of year) places to get it spayed/neutered. Once he had him, I made him promise me that he'd get him neutered. I helped him establish boundaries for the kitten's behavior and gave him a squirt bottle for enforcing discipline. Over the last year, things went okay. The two got along great and aside from a bad case of fleas, the cat seemed healthy and happy. Today my friend came over to print Missing Cat fliers because the cat ran away. I was pretty upset to hear it, but my sadness quickly turned to anger when I realized that he waited a week to tell me and make fliers, and worse yet -- he never got the cat neutered. When I scolded him about it, he said he didn't have the money. BULLSHIT! I gave him info about cheap/free spay/neuter opportunities near him. He had the time, and the money. I know for a fact that he's wasted money on frivolous crap such as: - A PS3 (when he already has a 360) - Multiple arcade stick controllers - beer, weed, cigarettes, etc... Hell, even with that stuff he still could've afforded to neuter him. Now, not only is his cat lost, but he's likely contributing to the overpopulation problem and he may be contracting/spreading FeLV (you know, Cat AIDS). After my friend left, I walked outside to spray pesticide around my house and saw my neighbor's dog standing next to me without a leash. Then all of a sudden he tore-ass into the street and came within inches of being hit by a car. This is the same neighbor who leaves their other dog outside without any shelter in the freezing cold, scalding summer, and pouring rain. WTF is wrong with these people? And I'm sorry to add this, but there's a common trait amongst them all -- they're all low-income people. It's just like with birth control. This is the same household that has four generations of rednecks living in the same two-bedroom house. I just don't understand it. Where I come from, we always spay/neuter our pets. We make sure they adequate shelter. We always keep them on a leash. And we use condoms when we fuck! WTF is wrong with these people?!!! deanb
Went a bit OT at the end there I certainly wouldn't get a dog, far too much hard work (that and my fear of dogs). A cat I'll get, but that's like a later in life thing. I'm gonna get fish. Had a cat fanatic in first year. She had a few cats back home. Ended up getting one for uni in 2nd year (despite landlord rules, but I tended to look after for those periods) She was really good with them though. Made sure they were jabbed n all that. About only thing close to not looking after properly was she'd make him hats to wear. And one xmas he had little gloves, which did lead to hilarious results in the kitchen. HotChops
Went a bit OT at the end there Did I? Because I think what I meant to say is that we should neuter people too. Yeah, I fucking said it.* And if you lived in my house and were surrounded by these idiots, you'd feel the same way. *obviously I don't really think we should sterilize people. RockyRan
I absolutely hate people who leave their pets out as if they were homeless. They roam around all day, almost getting hit by cars, they shit everywhere and pester basserbys. I ESPECIALLY hate the idiots who leave their cats out in the night, where they coalesce right outside my window and begin their fucking wailing at 4 in the morning, or run around my backyard and knock shit down overnight. Once we had a problem with rats living in an area with thick plants right next to our house and they'd often cross over to our yard, and we left in those poison pellets to kill/scare them. Far too many pellets were being eaten each night (it was only a handful of rats) and I immediately thought of all the cats that ran around at night, but I got to thinking, if the owners were inconsiderate enough to leave the cats out they really shouldn't be surprised that they'd eat poison that isn't meant for them. With that said, though, I also dislike the people who are on the other side of the spectrum and treat their dogs/cats as if they were children (and in many ways treating them BETTER than they treat their kids if they have any), then whine that you "mistreat your animal" if you don't...regularly brush your dog's teeth? McBeeferton
Some people just shouldn't own animals... Unfortunately I know some family members who fall under this category.

Yeah, I'm not that person. That's why I didn't bust my friend's balls when his cat got all flea-ridden. Even though he could get a disease, the fact is that fleas are a common problem and can be a bitch to eliminate. I can't lie though... when I'd get home from visiting his place I'd toss my clothes straight into the washing machine and then I'd jump in the shower. I didn't want that shit spreading to my place! excel_excel
*obviously I don't really think we should sterilize people. SAY WHAT YOU MEAN MAN Yeah some people shouldn't be allowed to have animals. I'm pretty proud of my family. We never had any pets till a few years ago when we found a kitten/cat with its bottom lip all cut up and bloody, but we took it in and it became DENSEL!....named after Densel Washington.... D: They have a boxer dog now too, she's all taken care of, neutered and all those jabs. Still stupid though. STUPID DOG. SIT.
Mister Jack
Negligent, irresponsible, and especially abusive pet owners are the kind of people I'd advocate putting in forced labor camps.

Dude, I love my dog. More than likely you're referring to the people who go to extensive lengths to pamper their pets, but I get tired of when people harass me for caring for my dog. Yes, I have a picture of my dog in my room. Sorry if I miss her as she's almost 300 miles away and she offered emotional support when things went crappy. It's unconditional love, but it's a love people can benefit from. Like, just because she's an inside dog doesn't mean I dress her in expensive dog clothes or feed her human cuisine. She's a dog, but I would consider her a member of the family. Lives under the same roof, there's pictures and memories of her with all the human members. When she dies, I'm going to be crying for a good while. That said, I really only care about my dog. One time, out on a walk, some little rat of a dog came up to us and started to harass my dog. If the owner (some brat) didn't run up and grabbed the thing, I would have probably kicked it.

SanaEquiesterer
I am surrounded by irresponsible pet owners. Both across the street and next door are families with three daughters. One of each of those daughters got a dog when they lived on their own for a bit, were forced to live at home again when things didn't work out, then dumped the dog on their parents when they moved out again or weren't at home. Now the mother in either house has to look after a dog that won't listen to them and wanders off the property when people walk by. They're lucky we're in a rural-residential area, otherwise those dogs would probably be dead. Then the same girl across the street owned a pet rat for a while. But when she was away from home for a few weeks and she never bothered to arrange anyone else to care for it, it died. For how much she cared for it, her mom could have gave me the rat and told her daughter it died anyway! With a name like Splinter, I'd have loved to own that rat. And on the opposite side of my block lives a woman who is just as bad as her dog. She walks it without a leash and will walk with it all over people's property. She doesn't pick up the dog's crap, and she does all this while walking around in her PJs, a housecoat, a coffee in one hand and a cigarette in the other. My neighbour from where I used to live picked up a cat from an industrial park one time, and we ended up owning him eventually. That was in 1994, and I had that cat until last month. I guess there is some comfort in knowing that some animals will move on to better places, away from bad pet owners.

Fling that stuff at her house. Joe Also, did you guys across the pond hear about the woman who put a cat in a wheelie bin here in the UK a few months back? I'm sure I remember reading that it got on the news over there. Pretty weird that she'd do it but hardly international news!
HotChops
Is that a british thing? what's a wheelie bin? And I assume "jabbed" means spayed/neutered.
Pirandello
I know how that feels. Back before I moved to university, my family's previous downstairs residents had a chihuahua. They never let him inside to sleep, and when it got very, very cold during the winter, the thing would whimper and bark for just about several hours during the night. Then it'd get quiet and I could get to sleep, until it hit about 5-6 AM and the damn thing would start barking again; I never got any decent sleep until they moved out. This whole situation happened for most of the first two years of high school. On top of that, they were a bunch of jackasses and we had an unofficial bad rap with them when we called them out on their bullshit and they got all butthurt about it. Thankfully, we have newer (more sociable) neighbors now (cool people!). When I think back on it, I felt sorry for the poor thing, but at the time when it happened, I just wanted to rip the downstairs people a new one and leave a trail of blood and death to serve as a warning to anyone else who moved in next. If you're going to have a pet, go the whole fucking nine yards and treat it nicely. Edited February 28, 2011 by Pirandello

TheFlyingGerbil
Yeah that's the clip, Deanb and it also explains what a wheelie bin is. I wanted to post the slip myself but I'm so close to my download cap I can't watch videos until Tueasday :'(
