Faiblesse Des Sens
I did read it. They have all of the information I have given them. I don't see any reason to be upset about it. If you've ever traded anything in they have your address and more already.
deanb
Anyway back to the issue at hand. If any store was to do this in the UK, or get any info from your card. Anything at all other than the machine sayign "they can afford this" then they'd be in deep shit. But as far as I'm aware you guys don't yet have the Chip n Pin technology. right? Faiblesse Des Sens
Credit cards run off signatures here, not PINs. Canadians have CC pins... I don't get why we don't. From wiki'ing the tech behind all I know about (just using a PIN) it seems a hell of a lot more secure.

excel_excel
I had no idea they still do signatures in the US. In Ireland it took a while before we were PIN only but its so much more secure. Anyway that's a bit screwed up. What they going to do with this info?
Chewblaha
Oh. That's retarded. You need to have your address for a return in case you're trying to cheat the store out of money and we need your address for trade-ins. Not like we're trying to mail you shit to your house, and if you buy the magazine, we need you to have some kind of address to ship it to? All we do when someone uses a credit card is simply check their ID to make sure they match. I don't know what this lady is talkin' 'bout. Anyway that's a bit screwed up. What they going to do with this info? We use PINs for Debit/Checking cards. We also have a three digit code on the back of our cards that we have for online purchases. It's been over three years since I last worked in online retail and IIRC that code on the back gave you a slightly better rate due to less fraud. In many stores you don't need to sign for anything under $25.
Thursday Next
So wait... they are capturing your address from your credit card and they are storing that information? Can you even capture that data from an in store CC transaction? How does she know (or rather, why does she suspect) that GameStop are doing this? I've moved like three times, changed my phone number and got a new credit card since I last shopped at Gamestop! That's quite the dedication. You testifying in court against them or something? Haa. It's more a testament to how long it's been since I've bought anything at a Gamestop. For PC Games, I go to Steam, and for the occasional console game, I go to Amazon, since they often have discounts on games at release, or offer bonus credit, and there's also no sales tax for me. Plus, you know, all that bad juju Gamestop was getting from developers for allegedly stealing their profits with all the used game sales profit. Little Pirate
I used to work at Gamestop a few years back (seasonal), and more often than not we had to ask for addresses for returns, trade-ins, and if you suspected you were up to something during a purchase. This came in handy when a lady had stolen games from Wal-Mart and tried to trade them back in. My boss made a crack about them looking like they were just bought and the lady got really defensive. (She looked like a crack addict so it was pretty obvious we knew what she was up to, and when we caught on she started raging.) The topic won't bother me because Gamestop already has my info. If it's just the address alone I don't really care too much because that's general information anyone can find by doing a simple google search or just looking in the damn phone book. Now if it were my e-mail or my phone they were giving out I'd probably be getting pissed.
