Good Topics To Write About...

So, did a little write up regarding that Twisted Metal teaser. Went well.

Supposedly, my Military article will be published on Monday. Not sure though. Will link it here.

Anyway, reason I'm creating this thread is I'm asking you guys what a good topic to do a feature or editorial on. I was thinking of doing one about piracy in Asia, or the cliche topic of girl gamers/gaming. Although I won't be focusing on the cheesecake side of it.

What do you guys think? Too cliche? What would be good subjects to do a feature about? Please no Art vs Games suggestions as I actually loathe those. :)

I hope to start something this week. Writing a feature/editorial lessens my posting quota. :)

Oh, and I'd appreciate it if all the things we talk about here, stay here. There's a reason why I like you guys. :D

Focusing on piracy in a certain area might be interesting, but I think what a lot of people could argue for (most of) Asia is that they don't see as many releases as Europe or North America - generally the high concentration gamer nations - which ultimately results in more pirating purely because they don't get some games released in their nation as we do here in the U.S. or Europe.

A female gamer article is way too cliche imo.

Hmm... you could respond to this pretty fascinating journal study on how games like Call of Duty, "become 'an artefact that legitimizes modern militaries as a natural part of social and personal life.'"

Particularly interesting with Homefront on the verge.

A thoughtful response to this article, combined with meditations on Homefront, could be a really standout piece.

However, it is a sticky subject that I wouldn't even dare getting into on the forums, as my views are, I'm sure, pretty abrasive to the average person, so I'm not sure if it would be a good idea for your first editorial, regardless of which stance you took on the article.

I sometimes get inspiration from forum topics, comments I've seen about. We actually have a list on PXOD of topic starters but not to be rude, they're kind of our topic starters. So I'll keep those to myself.

(though I'm miffed cos one I'm gonna work on over summer I saw part of the other day, so I guess not the only one with a thought on that)

Speculative posts are always good. You get to stretch your legs a little since you're not tied down too much on things that are fact, but you get to cite plenty of things for reasoning in your musings. And there's plenty of things to speculate on.

Retro/look back type posts are always popular. Especially if it's something a bit niche/cult type game as it's not something obvious, and thus covered before, but it has a following of sorts that can be drawn to your posts.

What about an article on big publishers (especially the platform holders) buying smaller publishers/devs that produce a game that becomes the critic's darling, a culty/cool game or even just a surprisingly successful game and then either the small company is either absorbed to produce big pub shovelware and never produces a similar game to its original or is just completely disbanded. It's just weird that they see something they like and by embracing it just squeeze the life out of it.

We do get a lot of releases. If not all you guys get. :)

It's the Collector's Editions, etc. That's a bit hard to find here. I think it's with the economy and how the country I'm in is not officially supported by the big three.

Yeah. Female gaming too cliche, no? Can you think of another slant to it? I was thinking of doing one wherein I can ask them what they think other females aren't playing as much, what made them start playing, etc. No cheesecake fluff stuff.

Yeah. Too political methinks. Not to mention editing that would be hell and I think the editors are hating me enough as it is. :)

I know what you mean. That's why I'm also asking you guys for ideas. You've all been gaming for a long time and know what's going nowadays. :)

What speculative points do you have in mind? Nothing too political or anything. I hope. Next-gen? Where the industry is going? Always someone with their own views on that one.

You know what, that would actually be kinda nice. I might consider that. :)

Well whether Nintendo are right on cheap games being bad, where the future will take us. Just how current trends could ban out. You can see plenty of viewpoints on topics like piracy, DLC, Project $10, handhelds, mobiles, consoles, PC, Digital Downloads, Streaming, etc etc.

As long as you have a stance worth writing on it's a potentially limitless well.

Yeah. One of my main concerns is I don't want to bite off more than I can chew. Y'know what I mean? I don't want to start something and end it on a weak note. I do assume that some people will rip what whatever it is I write. But at the same time I want it to be good as well. I think it would be alright if I run by some sentences, ideas here, no? :)

I kinda "know" some of the people here to some extent.
