excaliburps
Hey! Very sorry to start another topic but I think this warrants its own thread. David FUCKING Jaffe agreed to be interview by me! Holy shit. Would never have guessed he'd say yes. He shot me an email. Only thing off-limits are: - No TM questions as he's not allowed to divulge anything. Sony is the one who has that authority. - No "how did you get started in the biz?" "Why did you leave Sony" etc. Basically, questions that are a bit bland and he's answered a million times before. So, if you have good questions to ask, now's the time to have them answered! It would also be a good sounding board for me to talk to you guys about it a bit. Oh, and he also said it's ok to talk about other geeky stuff aside from videogames. Very happy and quite nervous when I think about it. *Dean, can this be under Gaming General Discussion? So more people can see and contribute to it? If not, it's alright. Cyber Rat
Since both God of War and TM featured a pretty good arsenal of weapons (and well, killing was the point of both series), what would his dream weapon in a game look like? (Or if he already made it, what is it?)
deanb
I can move it, don't think it'll change anything since folks tend to dip into all parts of the forum or use the portal/new/active content views. If he doesn't want Twisted Metal questions or bland things, I think asking him stuff that's kinda gamer relevant, but a bit off the beaten path. Make the interview enjoyable for him as much as the answers will be to the readers. http://criminalcrackdown.blogspot.com/ - this is his blog, it would be best to start here. It shows you've researched of sorts, which he should appreciate, and you an go "you've mentioned in the past that blah balh blah" (Though he seems to have stopped updating as of October, which err, last time I read it was Oct 13th . I assume that's to do with TM) I know I'd ask him how he's enjoying Twitter. Him and Blesinzki are two of the developers that have really dug in with it. So just how he's liking directly connecting with fans, if he'd recommend other devs do so. The common joke would be how he works on any games when he's tweeting so much (srsly, I'd love to follow him and he can be really insightful, but he tweets way too damn much) He also clashes a bit with the games press. That may be something weird to ask about coming from games press to ask n probe upon and may be out of bounds not by him but your EiC as essentially it's digging up dirt on other outlets. But if you can phrase it in some way that's interesting it'd be good to ask about. Maybe tie it into the twitter stuff on the "connecting to the community" sort of vein. http://www.1up.com/news/david-jaffe-thinks-sony-sue - this kind of stuff sets him off. Oh yeah, that also means if you interview him do it in full and do not take anything he says out of context. He kinda hates that the most. Simple questions: Games he likes to play What he's looking forward to this year Favourite TM character What he does outside of gaming, personal hobbies, anything at all. How long does he think he'll be making games Any ambitions to make something not so car or Grrr angry man related Should set neurons firing. It's somewhat limited since you can't ask on the TM stuff, but there's enough of him out there that there should be things you can pick apart. Just obviously the big part is knowing a bit more on your subject. Scan through his blog n twitter feed for any topics you' want to expand upon. toxicitizen
Being that most of his games are about vehicular combat, God of War was kind of a departure from his comfort zone. Ask if he sees himself ever leaving that comfort zone again and doing something different from what he's done in the past. SomTervo
I'd like to hear about his thoughts on the indie gaming scene. Always interesting to hear about that. And Hottie, that is one fucking awkward video. Nice.
Hot Heart
I'd say it's because Olivia Munn knows nothing about games but I get the feeling a lot of it is down to a personality clash. David Jaffe always seems pretty abrasive and he said he was pretty beat; I can't imagine having some airhead trying to joke around got on his good side. excaliburps
Keep the questions coming! Most definitely going to be able to use some of the ones here. @excel excel: I will definitely ask that. Was wondering about that myself. Ok, minor glitch. Got a response and he said he thinks a phone interview would be easier. Fuck! Thought it was email. Problem is I'm in Asia, no idea how to record whatever it is we'll talk about. Can I record it if I use AIM, Skype or Yahoo Messenger? Anyone know how? Or I'll try and ask him if email works. Thanks for the support and acknowledgments, guys. Keep the questions coming. I do have a few I've thought of already but it's always good to hear what other people have in mind. Almost always they think of something you didn't even consider. Also, I'm nervous as a freshman in prom! Edited March 4, 2011 by excaliburps

That would be a good subject to touch upon. Also, you don't follow him on Twitter? Nah. He doesn't tweet that much. If he does, it's mostly game related so it's all good. Id' say he's loving twitter. He even does some quick, focus testing there. Just for random, small stuff.

excaliburps
You can do it! We believe in you! Haha! Thanks! To be honest, I'm kinda nervous because he's one of the biggest celebrity devs out there, but at the same time I also don't want people (You guys. readers. my editor) to say "You asked that?" Or felt I was either too aggressive, or too passive. Or that I keep asking non-gaming related questions. In short, looking stupid. Oh, anyone here who knows how to record a conversation over the phone or Skype? Assuming he doesn't say yes to an email interview.
deanb
Phone? No idea. Skype however can get much easier. There's a couple of plug-ins that'll record it. Or Audacity should do the trick too. (Just give it a test out first, worst thing would be technical issues on the day)

I'll email him once I get all my questions checked and raring to go. That way if he gives me a schedule I'll be ready. So, anyone here with any more insightful questions? RockyRan
I don't know what other people have asked him, but I'd ask: -Thoughts on each platform: What does he like best about each, what does he hate most about each? (including PC in this) -Has he ever included something in a game that was just a complete disaster and it had to be taken out (feature, game mechanic, etc.)? -Some people (Ben Croshaw, etc.) are speculating that mainstream, big-name-studios don't have the ability to make an extremely experimental game (due to monetary risk) and thus people who want new experiences are defaulting back to indie gaming, where more and more experimental games are turning up that don't show up in mainstream games that had a bigger budget. What are his thoughts on this? Oh, and here's a big one I'd really like to ask: -What does he think about the exponentially escalating costs of game development? Does he think game development is a major problem, or is it maybe that budgeting in games just isn't being done very well, thus driving up costs? EDIT: And another one: -Does he think the industry (that is, from the developer side) is ready for a "next-generation" of consoles? Is there anything in particular about this generation that he feels is constraining him, or does this generation still have plenty of legs? peteer01
I don't know what other people have asked him, but I'd ask: -Thoughts on each platform: What does he like best about each, what does he hate most about each? (including PC in this) RockyRan had some great questions. As a follow up to the above, I'd also be interested to hear what he'd like to see in the next gen of consoles? - Mandatory HDDs? - Mandatory game installs? - Controls? Accelerometer? Rumble? Motion controls? More buttons? Less buttons? I'd also be interested to hear his thoughts on when he'd like to see new consoles, and why. (As a developer, does he want to stick with this gen as long as software sales support it, or is there a reason, as a gamer or developer, that he'd like to see new hardware? I'd be interested in hearing what the last few games he beat, purely for his own personal enjoyment, were. Part of me would like to suggest you ask the two forum questions, what game did he hate/love that other people loved/hated...but he may not want to answer one, and lack a good answer for the other... Just some ideas off the top of my head. I'm sure some aren't that good, but if there's a good one or two in there, glad to help out, and looking forward to some answers. deanb
Well I can answer most of peters since he answered questions of a similar vein last week: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-03-03-jaffe-installs-and-updates-annoy-gamers

I now do remember reading the title of that (or a similar) article in the Newsfeed a few days ago, but didn't read the article, and didn't realize he was tying in the limited number of patches idea to reducing non-gaming time with consoles in general. I imagine he'd be very, very much against mandatory HDD installs. Edited March 6, 2011 by peteer01
deanb
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2011-03-03-console-design-is-pushing-away-customers-jaffe http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/jaffe-console-makers-should-limit-game-updates-to-four-per-year/ These are the two I had in the News Feed. The first is more related to this than the patching thing (which was only a small element of it) but Games Industry.biz also needs a log in so you might have glossed over it for that. excaliburps
@dean Thanks a lot, man! That really helps a lot! I actually haven't contacted Jaffe yet. Been so very busy posting news. Have to edit the military interview a bit as well. Will email him this week and ask when's the best time to do it though.
