King Jimmeh
So, while Kotaku does post some stuff about Japan, there isn't much actual anime discussion.Just wondering who else around here enjoys anime, and what your favourite series are, and if you're watching anything at the moment? My favourite series has to DragonBall Z, although admittedly it can tedious at times. Other favourites of mine are the Ghibli movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and Kiki's Delivery Service. Along with those, am a mecha fan with shows like Gundam Wing, SEED, Macross Frontier and Plus.As I write this, I'm watching Gonzo's movie "Origin: Spirits of the Past" for a second time. Not the greatest film ever, but very well animated and enjoyable enough to watch to past the time.
Bouchart
I haven't watched any anime in ages. Cartoon Network used to play some good anime late at night a few years ago but lately it's stuff I've already seen, or uninteresting things. docsfox
Currently watching the following as they are released: Kuragehime - (Turning into my favorite animation.) Oreimo MM! Kami Nomi zo Shiru Sekai Yosuga no Sora I demand everyone to watch Kuragehime!
King Jimmeh
They must all be pretty new shows, as I haven't heard of any of them Any chance ya could tell me a bit about what Kuragehime is about?
docsfox
It's basically a show about a group of female otaku / NEET. And yes, these are still airing weekly in Japan.
Toshi
This is me in real life. True story.
King Jimmeh
I finished watching Durarara! and thought it was great... up until the finale, which just let me down significantly. I think every other episode was great, except for the end. I felt it just didn't seem to have the huge blow-off that it was built up to have. Toshi
I concur with your sentiments entirely. I want to know what happens next cause he still has the head.
ixa
So, while Kotaku does post some stuff about Japan, there isn't much actual anime discussion. yeah this kind of confuses me. if Bash is going to post "Japan, but not videogame related" stuff, at least have it be about like...anime and shit. not that idol crap. maybe there's more stuff related to idols to make posts about... oh well. this is a discussion for other threads, so whatevs. anyway, I don't really watch anime that much. uhmm...Berserk and Bokurano were pretty good though. if you haven't seen either of those, well...maybe you should. King Jimmeh
I watched one episode of Berserk, and honestly I fell asleep during it, and what I did see didn't really keep me interested. Just had a quick look-up of Bokurano, and like I said, I'm a bit of a mecha fan, so that sounds interesting.
Cyber Rat
I got through 25 episodes of Digimon Savers and I don't have the strength to watch it anymore. Going through my backlog and trying to watch Gilgamesh now.
Cyber Rat
You need to make a thread or blog where you'll tell us about these fun Japan stories. I love hearing about them.

King Jimmeh
Spirited Away is a great film. If ya haven't already, do watch some of the other Ghibli movies.
TheForgetfulBrain
Even if you don't care much for Anime, you should watch this show: http://www.hulu.com/the-tatami-galaxy If you like the band Asian Kung-Fu Generation, the guy that does their cover art also did the character designs for this show. Also, Kaiba, if you can find it. Looks like they have some of it on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_C3OYsktI4 They're actually both from the same director, and they're some of the most unique and wonderful shows I've seen, anime or not. I've watched some anime on and off over the years, but aside from these, there haven't been any shows to perk my interest recently.
Kau_Kau
The last series I watched and enjoyed was the book of bantorra. Friends have called me crazy for liking it though. Haven't really watched anything since except for rewatching the dagger of kamui. I'm not really a big anime watcher any more, still like to see any new ones that are different though. I enjoyed his and her circumstaces for it's constant change in styles.
mintycrys
I plan to watch Bantorra over the holiday season, as well as catch up on various shit I've missed (Sora no Woto, Bakemonogatari, Ookiku Furikabutte) This season, I've watched (or finished watching) - Otome Youkai Zakuro (I'm a sucker for good shoujo) - Index II (now with 93% less Kuroko!) - Panty & Stocking (2nd biggest surprise of the season) - SRWOG: The Inspectors (FUCK YEAH SRWOG) - Kuragehime (biggest surprise of the season) - The World God Only Knows (is as excellent as the source material) - Ore no Imouto (Hideyuki Kurata + AIC = LOVE) And of the things I sampled but dropped: - Ika Musume (How NOT to do a moé series. See K-On, Ichigo Mashimaro, Potemayo, and Hidamari Sketch for superior examples) - Yosuga no Sora (which had plenty of explicit secks, and I may pick it up again because I hear it's quite lulzy)
Chewblaha
Let me show you the epileptic movie Minty suggested I watch for Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt.
rainetemplar
Spirited Away is a great film. If ya haven't already, do watch some of the other Ghibli movies. Will do, it's on my to do list! I also heard the movie Paprika is supposed to be good?
mintycrys
Paprika isn't a Ghibli film, but a Satoshi Kon film, and it's a mess. Go watch Perfect Blue or (the sublime) Millennium Actress instead. Actually, just go watch Millennium Actress. I dare say it's better than anything Ghibli has ever made.
rainetemplar
Oh, yes I didn't think it was a Ghibli film. Hmm, I heard all Satoshi Kon movies are great, but I'll have to check out Milliennium Actress first. I've seen some pretty interesting trailers! RadiantViper
I have always wanted to get into anime but I have no idea where to even start. Any suggestions for a newcomer?

mintycrys
I have always wanted to get into anime but I have no idea where to even start. Any suggestions for a newcomer? There are so many genres and subgenres that it's difficult to give a blanket recommendation. What types of genres do you typically enjoy? RadiantViper
There are so many genres and subgenres that it's difficult to give a blanket recommendation. What types of genres do you typically enjoy? I don't really even know what anime genres typically consist of so I'm not sure. As you can see I liked Chobits so I could always start there. In general I would probably enjoy something cute/fun (so no action or fighting series), not overly sentimental and with a good pace so I don't get bored. Sorry I can't be more helpful, there's just so much in anime that it all kinda goes over my head. Honestly any suggestions you think are good would be very appreciated, cause then I can 'dip my toes' so to speak, and go from there
