Sindo
Same here. Spanish was no joke the only foreign language offered at my high school, so I had to take that for 2 years. Now I'm in a college that has an equally bad amount of foreign language options. Luckily I will be transferring in a year or two to a school that has TONS of options. I'll be taking Korean, but I hope to fit in Japanese too. But like Pirandello, I'm stocking up on required CS courses.
Mr. GOH!
I've never taken any classes on Japanese. I began learning it because I had friends who were Japanese (Californians) and eventually began playing games with Japanese (from Japan). It frustrated me not being able to communicate with people who were so interested in communicating with me, so I began teaching myself Japanese. This is also why my kanji is such crap, since I didn't learn Japanese in a formal environment while studying kanji at the same time. I don't mind anime. I'm like Battra in that I do enjoy some classic 80's sci-fi anime (I'm just an elitist and think that 99% of most anime is crap -- which it is). I think I would be too humiliated to admit liking any kind of anime in a classroom setting, though. It actually surprises me that people would be so unashamed about something like that. From my experience, most Japanese over the age of 20 don't really care/know about anime outside of Lupin. It is bad enough being stereotyped as gaikokujin without also being stereotyped as some kind of otaku... I didn't know that you actually studied Japanese for four years, Mr. GOH!. That is really impressive. You're like a regular Renaissance Man with all the knowledge and skills you seem to have. God, it was awful in first year Japanese. My college was a small liberal arts school in the Midwest and had an absolutely enormous traditional geek contingent. The most powerful student organizations were the geek frat and the science fiction, fantasy and anime society. They had their own dorm. So, yeah, no one thought twice about letting their geek flag fly. Which is itself a-ok. But when people who can barely speak Japanese whips out strange anime stock phrases, it annoys the hell out of the prof and other students. Well, I took four years of classes in three years. It's very, very rusty because I haven't kept up with it. And, shucks, I'm no renaissance man. I'm just overeducated, is all.
Toshi
Anyways, back on topic, I like Durarara!!! a lot for an anime, which someone introduced me to simply because she said Izaya was a lot like me. After seeing him cellphone stomp a girl's phone and his snarky ambivalent manipulative nature, I was inclined to agree and grew an interest in the series. However, I was disappointed in the ending somewhat, and am hoping they will continue the story someday.

Pirandello
That is stereotype of a weaboo. I generally avoid them as much as possible. I had one in my arts class in my senior year of high school. Listening to her speak wanted me to bring a shovel to the back of her head. On another note, I sort of crave an anime section to discuss specific animes instead of clumping them all up in this thread. But I suppose this is fine, too. Mr. GOH!
Goh, I feel you can share my pain when some says Moe Moe Kyun~ Just seeing it there in your post raises my urge to kill significantly. I mean, Japan has an ancient, complex and beautiful culture. Why the hell must Americans focus on the most inane parts of it?
BrainHurtBoy...2
Manhua>Manga. Loljk. But really, I actually just got Japanese lessons from my brother's family for christmas, awesome present, I know, and I'm really excited to add another language to my belt. I'll finally speak more than my father. So far, I've got Cantonese, English, Spanish, French, Hindi, Thai, and, to a bastarded degree, Malayalam under my belt, So I'm just buildin up that list. My father also partially lives in Japan, so it'll be useful for visiting him, though I'm honestly more of a Hong Kong man.
Sindo
If we're going to start that.... Manhwa > Manga or Manhua Yeah I can't back that up.
Toshi
Seriously, you should be talking about anime. Aside from Durarara!!! I did like FMA. The manga was pretty good... I never really liked the one they showed on Cartoon Network much.

TheForgetfulBrain
IMWO, subtitles vs. english dubs make a huge difference. I used to think FMA looked stupid when I saw the previews for the first show on Cartoon Network, but when I watched a subbed version I couldn't remember how I thought it looked bad. Both series had their high points. Still need to finish FMA:B. Anyhoo, full disclosure, I grew up in the middle of nowhere (re: yosemite/fresno) a super ignorant white kid doing his best not to be a racist in a town that had rebel flag parades, and was obsessed with anime. Still dunno the exact definition of a weeaboo, but I probably was one for a while. Took me a while to realize how stupid I was. Still not fully comprehensive on that. TheForgetfulBrain
I've gotten a lot less picky on dubs, so I'd have to give it a shot again. I'm still pretty impressed by about 80% of the Atlus dubs (even though that's games and not anime), but I typically prefer subs.

Durarara!! is one of my favourite anime series, but I have to agree that I was disappointed by the ending. A lot of build-up that it didn't really pay off on. If the ending was better, It'd likely top off my list of favourite shows. Fantastic set of characters, and a well paced show for the most part, but could've done with just one more episode and a bit more of an epic finale along with a bit more time for exposition. Mal
The FMA dubs are pretty good and this is coming from a guy that usually will pick subs over dubs.
staySICK
The FMA dubs are great. I love the care they give to it; even the aftereffects they give to Alphonse; his voice resonating from the empty armor.
Enervation
Vic Mignogna still voices Ed, right? He's a great voice actor, but I never watched FMA:B.
staySICK
from what I've encountered so far with brotherhood, its all the same voices.
King Jimmeh
Alphonso had a new voice actor in the English dub of FMA: Brotherhood. I remember that from listening to the cast commentary on the first DVD. Most of the rest of the cast are similar with a couple of small changes. staySICK
huh, I hadn't noticed. cool.
King Jimmeh
The new voice actor managed to find a similar voice for Alphonso, plus they used the same "filter" on the voice as they used on the original dub. I say "filter" because if I remember right, they said they used a colander (or something similar) over the mic
BrainHurtBoy...2
I'm marathoning Durarara!! and it is SO awesome. I'm at episode 18 atm, and it is just great. All the characters are super interesting and their relationships are very well-woven. Izaya is SO awesome, and I love the way he combats and keeps up with Shizuo. I remember wondering the first few episodes 'What the fuck is this show?', but sticking with it has paid off in spades.
Toshi
Oh goodie, because I'm currently in my Izaya phase.

Well, and Gundam. :-P But I heard a great quote on film once that said something akin to "If you want to love film you have to love crap." Anime is the same way. "Super Kawaii-Desu Tentacle Child Rape" is garbage but some people actually enjoy watching garbage.
CorgiShinobi
I'm really picky when it comes to anime. Not so much what I like, but what I'm willing to give a chance. Most of the anime I own are the ones I would watch on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Rarely do I ever go outside that bubble to find shows like Gurren Lagann and Code Geass unless there is a lot of talk revolving around them. I will say, I have some interest in the movie Summer Wars after picking up an anime magazine. Hey, it had FLCL as its cover story!
