Paprika is alright. I have it on DVD, but have only watched it once as it was pretty crazy stuff. Stick to the Ghibli for now, they're simpler stories. If you want crazy stuff then yeah, check out Paprika, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and while I haven't seen it myself Tekkonkinkreet is meant to be good.

There are so many genres and subgenres that it's difficult to give a blanket recommendation. What types of genres do you typically enjoy?

I don't really even know what anime genres typically consist of so I'm not sure. As you can see I liked Chobits so I could always start there. In general I would probably enjoy something cute/fun (so no action or fighting series), not overly sentimental and with a good pace so I don't get bored.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, there's just so much in anime that it all kinda goes over my head. Honestly any suggestions you think are good would be very appreciated, cause then I can 'dip my toes' so to speak, and go from there :)

Chobits was originally a manga by CLAMP, so check out some of their other adaptations, for example Card Captor Sakura and xxxHolic (I would say Tsubasa Chronicles, but the anime was pretty messed up when adapted from the manga).

Otherwise, check out some slice-of-life/comedy stuff like Azumanga Daioh.

As far as cute goes, I would direct you to perhaps the most tightly-scripted comedy anime ever created: Galaxy Angel. It's not for everyone, but it's iconic for lots of different reasons, most notably the jokes. For a much more straight comedy, I would also recommend Seto no Hanayome, which I had more fun watching than any comedy in recent memory. Most cute series tend to be slice-of-life stuff, and are usually slower-paced, but fun to watch. Kamichu is another fantastic series in that vein, with a fantastic studio behind it.

Jimmeh mentioned Azumanga Daioh, which is a now-legendary comedy, which I still haven't been able to sit through, personally. The manga is unparalleled, though.

Also, try watching the first episodes of some of the stuff I mentioned in my first post. This season is WAY above the usual average with regards to good series. Panty & Stocking, Kuragehime, and The World God Only Knows are all great shows, as are the others in my list (though you may not appreciate SRW for all the giant robots and cheesiness).

It's incredible. Very meta.

If you're looking for good romantic/comedy I'm going to suggest K-ON!, CLANNAD, and Oriemo.

Azumanga Daioh and Kuragehime are also really good but Azumanga makes a lot of jokes that a person relatively new to anime/Japanese culture probably won't get and Kuragehime is about otaku/NEETs that again a newer viewer may not understand. Not that they can't enjoy them, rather they would just be more enjoyable to watch if you had more information.

Lucky Star is another great show, but like Pani Poni Dash, you have to be familiar with anime and otaku culture to get a lot of the jokes.

On the other hand, there is Haruhi, but I can't personally recommend it. A lot of people like it (outside of the Endless Eight debacle), but I've watched the first episode (that aired), and thought it was pretty terrible XD, so never watched anymore of it.

Watching FLCL right now. This show always cracks me up.

I love that series too fucking much.

I watched this scene so many times some five years ago. It was about the best thing ever in my anime induced haze, then.

Shame the clip doesn't include the rest of the scene/song, on the scooter.

I haven't watched anime in ages really. I do need to finish up Maison Ikkoku (I can't bring myself to let it end) as well as watch the rest of Touch.

I'm an old school fan. This new stuff just makes me cringe.

Oh, the last "new" show I watched a "friend" of mine sent me. Turns out it was about a guy (who looked like a girl with a penis) doing his older sister. Japan: Producing most of the world's fucked up shit since 1945.

The thing about the modern animu industry is that, generally speaking, if you're not watching moé, you're either watching derivative shonen action CRAP (the levels of awfulness of which cuter stuff has yet to descend into), or FER SRS series with ADDULTS doing SRS things, most of which turn out to have messy writing or poor characters, and I've been burned by far too many series with oh-my-fucking-god-I-can't-believe-they-ended-it-like-that endings which sucks more than simply watching a series with all cute and no story. I hate investing my time in a series only for it to just go flaccid at the ending.

Watching 26 episodes where I'm warmly amused and nothing happens >>>>>>>>>>>> watching 24 awesome episodes with a rushed, atrocious, or otherwise disappointing ending kick in the nads as a payoff (fix'd).

I love animes where all you have to know is the basic plot and you can watch any other episode at random.

Otherwise, I LOOOOOOOOVE horror/thriller anime. Elfen Lied is kind of a given off that. The When They Cry series is my favorites. Higurashi is completed, but Umineko was cut off short, sadly. No one can make a better yandere face than these gals.

The actors in this were amazing at their crazy screams.
