Ok so I'm on episode 216 with Bleach, I watched the sub up till 189, and then with my girlfriend watched the entire series again with the dub up till 216.

Its really fell apart. What started as a unique anime has just fallen into shonen fight fight fight drivel. Also The humour just isn't there anymore. It consists of 'OH SOMEONE DID SOMETHING STRANGE, NOW WATCH PEOPLES REACTIONS AND PLAY FUNNY MUSIC'. I'm hoping the next arc has something for me to sink my teeth into because right now this is not very good. Naruto has a deeper plot and actual deaths (ok...rarely), and One Piece....well One Piece is just awesome but its hard to get into.

Also the characters introduced post Saving Rukia arc, like the Viazard and the Arrancars are for the most part, generic and annoying.

Ugh, so true. Yeah, the beginning had this really unique sort of feel. I can't come up with words to accurately describe it, but I enjoyed the slow pace, and it seemed more like it was focused on like, otherwordly or occult-ish type stuff. Now it's just a power up shounen blob of laziness. Up to Rescue Rukia arc was best, as quiddity said, but I could have at least had respect for Kubo if he ended it after SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERAIZENENDSPOILERENDSPOILER dies. Also, how is Chad only in high school? Looks like a grown ass man!

Like quiddity said, though, for some reason I keep reading the manga. It's just something I've been doing once a week for a few years now, so I dunno, I just can't stop. But it's pretty bad. Naruto is better considerably right now, but I do hope it ends relatively soon. Like, by end of 2012?

Oh, and how the heck do you do spoilers the right way?

That's exactly it. When it started, it felt strangely dark and unique was working really well introducing and developing characters and making fights seem important events. Ichigo wasn't a hugely original character but he worked, and Rukia was always a really intresting addition to the series. The saving Rukia arc worked a lot as all the characters felt strong and unique, although the 'dark' elements of the series were toned down the 'hollow' Ichigo was an interesting addition....after that its just...ugh.

Chad, there was an interesting character, who was just turned....boring. just really boring. yeah plus he looks like he's 25. Kind of the opposite of anime characters always looking young.

Apparently the author enjoys creating new characters and finds creating new characters an interesting way to get out of writers block....which makes fucking sense at the sheer amount of characters introduced rapidly who actually mean fuck all to the plot

So I just finished rewatching FLCL. I hadn't seen it in years. It's as good as I remember, particularly that final episode. Excellent series.

I'm liking it so far, but I'm not a fan of the quality of the English dubbing.

Also, after I finish this, do you have any other anime recommendations? Other than Spirited Away and Persona 4, this is the first anime I've watched.

WTF, the English is good. :|

I've watched it many, many, many times. I guess some characters are not dubbed to a "high" quality, but the main characters, especially Haruko, are well done.

With that I leave this:

EDIT: I will say this too, the voice actor for Amarao had great difficulty with Japanese names. I have the Ultimate Edition DVD collection, and in the outtakes the guy, for one scene, repeated "Haruko Haruhara" about two dozen times. He could not get "Ha-ru-har-a."

I like the VA for Haruko, but Naota's VA really, really bothered me.

Anyway the moment in the final episode that especially blows me away every time is when

Naota gets Atomsk's power and Haruko freaks out, with the music playing and Naota says "I love you.", then kisses her and the music swells! Fucking insane!

What a great scene. What a great finale and what a great series. I remember being absolutely blown away the first time I saw it and I keep getting blown away every time I watch it again. Let the naysayers say nay, I love FLCL! My second favorite non feature-length anime ever (after Eva).

Cowboy Bebop is always a good starter recommendation.

As a lot of people put it, "it's an anime for people who don't watch anime."

Seriously, I could get so many people to watch Cowboy Bebop simply because it's not a stereotypical anime. It's always like, "Yeah and I don't like this Japanese cartoon stuff, but that space bounty hunter one was really good."

The VA for Naota is a lady person. ;)

It's the curse of prepubescent male characters: getting a child voice actor is either poor quality or is never a permanent solution, or you get a woman to add a little testosterone to her voice.

I'd watch Cowboy Bebop, but I can't find it anywhere on Netflix. Perhaps I'll have to bite the bullet and buy the DVDs, but I'd rather do that at a time when a million games aren't releasing.

Also, dubbing sounds better in this second episode. Maybe it was all in my head, or something.

Oh, I didn't realize we were listing feature length, also.

Yeah, watch Akira. Seriously, watch Akira.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was great, also.

As ST said, 5 cm Per Second is good, and you should really watch Ghost In The Shell, which is on Netflix, as well.

Just finished Episode 3 of FLCL. You guys were right; it's a pretty neat show! Apart from the requisite battle at the end of each episode, it keeps surprising me. Loved the bit in the first episode where they pretended the characters were actual actors sitting in a trailer.

That part is what convinced me to watch the series when it first premiered on Adult Swim.

Only a few cartoons from my childhood ever broke the 4th wall, mainly Animaniacs and Freakazoid! To have the characters go into a conversation literally outside the main premise to discuss the technique of slow motion... MIND BLOWN!

So out of all the new animes that came out recently, I have seen:

Fate/Zero: Because prequel, that's why.

C^3 - C Cube: I smell a mini-harem. Also, tsundere.

Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai!: Going to watch it, but waiting for the eroge itself to get fully translated before I give it a go. Hurr hurr.

Kyoukai Senjou no Horizon: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT WATCH THIS. IT IS HORRIBLE. (See: you must read 18 novels to understand where this anime is right now.)

Tamayura ~hitose~: Quite literally the most normal anime there is this season. It's such a normal anime it makes you realize that it fits with real life a little too well.

And as an end note to Saturnine's post, I think Evangelion is overrated and horrible. That is all.

Also, FLCL managed the impossible and made a Vespa look like a badass motor vehicle.

Also, do the Japanese have some sort of fascination with punk culture? I thought it was just Suda 51 that was in love with punk, but FLCL's insanity with hard rock and a guitar weapon makes me think that it might be a widespread thing over there.

I don't think its too widespread, there aren't too many anime that are really focused on hard rock.

Tangentially everyone should watch Detroit Metal City, one of my all time favorite anime. It's a pretty awesome satire on Metal and Metal fans. Its very short though, some 12 episodes that are 10-15 minutes long.

Well, remember that the FLCL original video animation (OVA) began April 2000 and didn't finish until March 2001. The series didn't air on Adult Swim until August 4th, 2003. Considering the entire series is 6 episodes long, it didn't take long to run the entirety on US television.

Anyway, the point I want to make is that the music is primarily from "the pillows," a band who's alternative/power rock music associated with the series existed in the 90's. So if it's "punk," it's Japan's music from the 90's; in comparison the US was more into grunge after having experienced "rap rock" and was soon to experience the boy band craze.
