After some recommendations, I've started Magi. Not bad I think. It got the potential to scratch the itch of Fullmetal Alchemist and that is saying something. It got a pretty vibrant world with wonderful design with both locations and characters. So far pacing is good (At episode 5) with no real slow downs. The only real negative, I suppose (?), is how white/Asian washed the characters are. Everybody is pale skinned even though pretty much everyone so far is based off of Arabs, Indians, Africans, Steppe people (Mongols) and China. No hints of Roman, Greek (They're kind of tannish though) or other European civilizations yet. Not like its hindering my enjoyment of the series but come on.

I know there is a manga and I hope it really doesn't get strung out. I know I can read the manga but I know how I am with manga (I will kill it in no time at all if I like it). So yeah, I hope the manga concludes relatively soon because I really don't want to be a slave to a 100+ episode series (It also kills most shonen series). So far its sitting at 50 episodes (25x2 seasons) with a side story OVA. I'm going to use this first season and its manga equivalent to gauge how I like its progress before I totally commit.

Oh yeah, it got a wonderful OST too.

On a tangent... I've caught up on Attack of Titan after a few months break. Cool development and world building but we're never going to plug up Wall Maria and head into that basement until next year at this rate.

^ It'll be interesting how that turns out for sure.

Since the last episode of Gundam Unicorn was out I thought about going back and watching the previous 6. I was hoping to watch them somewhere that was somewhat legit and at the time GundamInfo had the first 6 up on Youtube with english subs but for some reason it wasn't available in the US. Instead of figuring out how to get past the region block like a smart person I went to do something else and completely forgot about it.

:bun-depressed: Now they're not up anymore and I'm an idiot. The end.

Watched the first couple of episodes of Knights of Sidonia.

It's like nothing's happened in the genre since Neon Genesis. Fucking boring. Badly paced narrative. Stupid anime stereotype characters. More mysterious giant monsters who are basically impossible to kill and appear out of nowhere after (sigh) hundreds of years. Basically Titans/ Angels/ whathaveyou with added tentacle. Decent sci-fi backdrop.

Utterly gorgeous art, though. The animation is super low framerate, but it's forgivable cos it looks so damn good. That's literally the only good thing going for it from my point of view.

Do yourself a favor and just read the manga. The anime is good supplemental material though.

Careful with comparing Sidonia to Attack on Titan. Nihei's daughter did so and the nod to it got blasted. Nagate is also badass numero uno. He loves and will die for unigiri.

Lastly, I suppose it is a good thing that I never watched NGE.

Thanks for the tip. It's always the same.

I don't see why it's such a contentious comparison to draw?

NGE (as far as I know) invented the "humanity under seige from unbelievably tough alien entities which nobody understands and nobody knows where they came from" opening plot gambit. Attack on Titan is exactly the same initial plotline, but with the twist that it's a middle-ages fantasy universe and rather than organic mech-types, the invaders are freaky giant humans (still basically mechs). And Sidonia is the same again but set fully in space instead of mid-future Earth, with aliens who are pretty dang close to NGE's Angels.

So really my point is that it's ripping off NGE, and this by proxy makes it similar to Attack on Titan.

Also I really recommend NGE. I'm not a big anime buff, neither are any of my friends, but everybody I've shown it to appreciates the achievement of it. It's melancholic but not self-obsessed, it's really thematic but not absurd or obscure (read: it's very intelligent). Still has stupid comic relief bits though, which typify anime.

I've wrapped up the 64th episode of FMA. So not bad going, guess it really sunk its claws in to me. Flows quite well, though I'd say many episodes don't quite work well on their own (as in the "beginning middle n end" might be across three episodes, so works well for binge watching)

So amongst wondering on what next, I am curious about

Where "Dwarf in the flask"/"Father" came from. Hohenhiem says he "came from nothing" (which'd break equivalent exchange), and also implied from Hohenhiems blood which'd be quite an amazing feat to make life from just some blood. Especially as the Homunculi are made from philosophers stones, using many souls. So yeah, somewhat mixed. Also doesn't say who made Father either, or where the knowledge came from that it had (I guess from "the truth").

Also on that regard I may have missed something on how Ed destroying his door and alchemy skills brought Al's body back. But I won't head scratch too much on that. They went a bit all out near the end, like Father making energy shields n blasts rather than physical/material shields and projectiles as shown for most of the show.

Yeah I heard Death Note dips a bit. I've got the first 4 volumes of the manga, cracking stuff

So, last night I finished Gantz.

More accurately, I watched 25 episodes over 4 days, and then 5 minutes before the end of the last episode I quit.

Fucking anime bullshit.

I had no idea that Gantz was cancelled at like episode 22 or whatever. I had no idea they were about to begin running the thing into the ground from episode 23 onwards. Earlier this week I read a couple of tidbits of plot - about the purpose of Gantz and what it all means. I read this mainly by accident, it was minor spoiler stuff from the middle of the overall story.

So when I hit episode 26, realised that it hadn't introduced a single plot development since episode 18 or so, that they hadn't introduced really basic stuff which I knew was in the story (like what really happens when you hit 100 points) and that the TV show was obviously about to do what every single fucking anime ever does and cop-out on a good finale - I just quit. Fuck that shit. I read how it ends online when lying in bed and my blood boiled. A phenomenal piece of entertainment which I devoted many hours to and they let it fucking deflate right from a key scene.

Now I have to go download the manga and read up to where I watched to find out how stuff actually goes down.

Christ.

The reason I'm actually so bitter is that it was amazing. Up until cancellation point, episode 22 or so. Like borderline best anime I've ever seen. Even the horrible anime tropes like objectified female characters and structural homophobia were addressed in later episodes, when the characters actually developed and realised how meaningless all that shit is. It was amazing. It was like the anti-anime. Not to mention it has actual sex scenes, actual brutality, actual realism (eg characters traumatised by various events and their psychologies being affected by them, real time).

It had a few of it's own stupid problems in general but these didn't mess with my enjoyment much. Like the million times something really drastic is about to happen (eg someone about to be crushed by an alien) and the characters will literally spend half an episode standing and talking about what to do. While the impending hand of doom is slowly descending on a person. At one point later on a character even says ('shouldn't we... kind of go help now or something? I mean, we're just standing here'.)

It was a near-masterpiece, I couldn't get enough. Then that final stretch... Christ
