I've been watching My Hero Academia and I definitely enjoy it. Great that we have a protagonist that instills hard work and determination in the face of impossible odds. I was expecting at first that All Might would be a jerk who just happened to be the best superhero, but he actually is a great guy.

I guess the one spoiler I would mention

Deku getting a Quirk from All Might was earned and not handed out. I thought that was excellent because while Deku proved he had the virtue of being a great hero, he still needed to earn the power by improving his physical prowess. He had a schedule/plan and stuck with it.

Also, he got to talk to a girl, so that's cool too

Next to Jojo, I think My Hero Academia is my favorite anime right now.  Having read the manga, I can say that so far the anime seems to be putting extra little artistic touches on the show to give it an extra injection of personality, which definitely works in its favor in my opinion.  Uraraka has only had a few lines so far but her voice melts my heart.

I'm still waitin' impatiently to see my personal favorite show up, though.

I truly enjoy My Hero Academia. Even when Izuku (Deku) gets a Quirk, things don't get easier for him. He has probably the best Quirk, but it's so powerful that it will break his body. His homeroom teacher determines he has no potential, but then Izuku proves himself. Supposedly the teacher gets "cool," but I mean, screw him for underestimating Izuku!

On a side note, I can't help but crack a smile when Izuku blushes from Ochako's (gravity girl) praise.  ^_^

Yeah I tweeted about this earlier. I can't see them managing to cram 60 episodes of a show, or 27 volumes, into a single movie. You'd have to remove a lot of the plot and pretty much any character development. Apparently the Attack on Titan filmed sucked too, so folks aren't hopeful on this.

Also while I agree it's pretty naf that the GitS film is whitewashing and all that given it's clearly set in Tokyo, it's stupid that the article writer and the director is being all "yeah we're gonna go all Japanese on this cos reverse whitewashing" when it's clearly a European setting. The director is casting Japanese actors cos it's a Japanese made film, pretty much exactly why GitS has American actors. I wouldn't trust a director that honestly truly believes the series makes no clear signs on the areas and peoples represented.

Dark secret...

I actually have never completely watch any of the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure seasons/parts. I've always known Stardust Crusaders which to me seems to be the obvious popular/favorite Part. I'm familiar with the origins and characters (mostly) for Parts 1-3, but that was it.

Then last week I was bored and life has been hitting back pretty hard. I finished the episode of Boku no Hero Academia and wanted more. The suggested show on Hulu was Diamond is Unbreakable. I watch it, that was cool. Oh, so his Stand can heal too. Wait, this is crazy.

Now I'm watching a show where a guy's intestines exploded out of his body, but reverted back to cure his diarrhea. When in doubt, it's always the work of a Stand.

Jojo is legit probably my favorite anime/manga series of all time just for the sheer entertainment of it.  Everything is so over the top and all the characters are clinically insane and just when you think it can't surprise you any more you get a video game that steals souls.

It's definitely a series you get the most out of if you start from part one, though.

Oh, and I love all the Engrish.  Engrish is a guilty pleasure for me when I watch anime.

Oh man, last night I made the mistake of rewatching the first episode of One Piece on Crunchyroll. I was super into that show years ago and now I kinda want more but holy shit, the idea of getting into a show with 800+ episodes just sounds fucking exhausting to me these days. Like, who the fuck has time for that? It feels like I'd have to either stop playing video games entirely or just end up watching it for like 5 years.

Otherwise, I'm close to wrapping up Parasyte: The Maxim. Might do that tonight, actually. I think it was Wally that recommended it a little while back? Overall, it's been a pretty enjoyable watch. It lost a bit of steam in the second half, so I'm hoping it starts to pick up again in the last few eps. Would be a shame for the show to have a weak ending.

Not sure what to watch next, though. I've been in a pretty big anime mood lately, so I definitely want to watch another one. Other than One Piece I just mentioned, I was thinking of maybe rewatching Death Note. I never finished the manga back in the day because I got fed up of waiting for new chapters and when the anime happened I just kinda stopped watching, for some reason. Do you guys have some recommendations? Preferably stuff like action, scifi, horror and the likes. Lesser known stuff would be welcome. Parasyte sorta came out of nowhere in that I had never even heard of the manga, so it was a really nice surprise.

Yeah any show that's more than 50 episodes is like "waah". Be almost like watching Coronation Street from the first episode (8,930 episodes of writing). So yeah stuff like FMA, Deathnote, etc. Shows with a clear begining and ends, opposed to likes of DBZ which'll go on as long as they can.

I'm always up for recommending FMA. That PsychoPass seems to get good reviews, it's sorta on my list to watch.

Definitely. I mean, I love Dragon Ball to death. The manga is a huge part of my childhood but I'd never watch the original anime run. That's why I was happy when they made the Kai recut. Made it a lot more bearable with almost all the filler cut out. Went from like 300 eps to something like 90 or so. It was incomplete when I watched it, though. Stopped after the Cell arc but apparently they went back and finished it in the years since.

The crazy thing to me is that DBZ is actually "short" compared to more recent stuff like One Piece and Naruto. With such long-running shows based on still-running mangas, you run the risk of endless filler arcs like Naruto or just straight up premature death like Bleach. It just doesn't feel worth investing the time into watching them anymore.

And yeah, FMA is up there as one of the greats. The Brotherhood version especially. I vaguely heard about Psycho-Pass but it was mostly about the VN. Not sure how the two relate. Might be worth looking into.

If you're on Crunchyroll, and you haven't tried it yet, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. The first two parts of the manga series make up an entire season, so it's very straightforward. If you end up liking what you're watching, then you can watch the 48 episodes of Part 3 Stardust Crusaders.

Parasyte: The Maxim was surprisingly alright for what I expected. When it first aired on Toonami, I went and watched the whole thing on Hulu. THe main gripe I have about it is that there was too much focus on the main character being "not himself" anymore. He would internally struggle with it, his girlfriend would always get upset about it. Cool on-the-edge developments sure, but that was mainly coming from the side characters and main protag boy was just there for the ride near the end.

At least he still has a hot GF.

I was seriously pissed at the idea of her falling off the building, but we got trolled!

EDIT: Oh yeah, and on One Piece. Man, if you ever take a break from that series, the time flies and you end up with 100 chapters to catch up on. Considering it's dialog heavy at times, it's not an easy feat like say Bleach where 9 pages are just dudes swinging swords and BS abilities.

Just finished Parasyte. It was kind of a weird finale but that was a pretty intense episode. And yeah, I'd have been pissed too in regards to your spoiler. One thing I'll say is that while the show overall was pretty good, it got a little too heavy-handed with its themes at times. There was the whole "not himself anymore" thing you mentioned plus all that "bla bla lifeforms" stuff in the last few eps.

And yeah, Jojo's on the list. I watched the first season a couple years back, before Stardust Crusader had begun. I liked it but it didn't blow my mind or anything. Does it get better? I enjoyed Phantom Blood a lot but Battle Tendency... I don't know, it's been a while so I can't really be specific about it but I didn't like it as much. Anyway, I'll watch the rest eventually but after this long I kinda feel like I should rewatch the first season, and I'm not quite ready to do that just yet.

That's strange.  Most people prefer Battle Tendency over Phantom Blood, but Stardust Crusaders is when stands are introduced and the whole tone of the series shifts dramatically from there.  Stands are pretty entertaining, though, and they facilitate some pretty good battles just because their powers are so unusual.  I wish I could explain it but it would be spoiling some of the best moments.

Yeah, that's why I'm unsure about jumping right into Stardust Crusaders. I feel like there's something most people got out of the show that I missed. Looking back, I think that

the sudden death of Jonathan and the subsequent protagonist change threw me off a bit.

I was a bit disappointed by that and the show never completely recovered afterwards. I'm hoping I'll enjoy it more on a rewatch. I mean, it's not like I hated Battle Tendency or anything. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing stands if only to finally understand why people kept comparing Persona to JoJo. I can kind of vaguely infer what they are just from that but I've been curious about that for years. I don't think the anime had even started the first time I heard that comparison.

The gist of a Stand is basically the personification of one's own innate supernatural ability. In the first episode of Stardust Crusaders, a character explains that Stands are what people have referred to as ESP. Honestly that's just a statement that helps the viewer understand the perspective normal humans have to Stands, in that Stands are unseen forces to those without their own Stand.

So it looks like a guy is standing there while prison bars are torn open, or there's an increase to the room's temperature without any visible flames or heat source. You have to imagine how strange Stand battles must appear to the common person as two men are receiving cuts and being flung across the road. Of course, there are Stands that have a more visible effect on the world, but I feel like if I went further with an example, it would spoil the fun.

Damn it, dude, please don't post shit like that without tagging it. That's just not cool. :/

I really don't appreciate spoilers, however minor they might be. I wasn't asking for an explanation, I did say I would watch it eventually. It's the second time you did it, too. I didn't say anything about the Parasyte one because I only noticed the implied spoiler after I'd watched the final episode but you could've easily completely ruined that part for me. Nothing makes me instantly lose interest in watching something more than having them spoiled... Like, over a decade later and I still haven't bothered reading the last two Dark Tower books because some asshole dropped a huge spoiler on me out of nowhere years ago.

When I posted the Parasyte one I read it as though you had just finished it, but looking back I see now you were finishing it. I do apologize on that and wish I read the post better..

For Jojo, I'm not sure how it's a spoiler as that's just how a character describes how people would explain Stands. As far as actual characteristics of a Stand and the loose guidelines of what one can do, that you'll have to watch to find out. I haven't played Persona, so I'm not sure how the two compare, so that's why I felt compelled to mention the rough explanation given in the first episode and if it relates to the prior comparison given to you.

I do truly feel bad now and truthfully I've spent about 40 minutes making sure I'm phrasing this post very generically. Going back and rephrasing and changing my wording, etc. All I think I can say is once you've watched how bizarre the show gets, all the crazy and varying shenanigans make it hard to pinpoint to the new viewer what they'll be watching for even the first couple episodes. I've explained this to others as such before, so I do apologize again if my wording has revealed more than intended.

I also wanted to suggest how far into the show you can determine if you'll like it as 48 episodes is a commitment. However, I will leave that for you to determine so as not to create an expectation of plot and character.
