Pirandello
I've been watching the show with one of my Japanese friends (since he's the one who told me about it). I don't know if there are any fansubs of it out there in English, but I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys these types of videogames and slice-of-life shows. As far as anime go it is pretty tolerable, and it has its moments. Oh, there definitely are fansubs for it. Every anime season, there's always a poster child for it. OreImo just so happened to be the one for the Fall 2010 anime season. The current anime season is Winter 2011, though most of them are so bad/banal that I don't even think it has a poster child this time around. Unfortunately, I myself don't like OreImo at all. Mostly, it's to due with intentional ignorance, which leads to jumping to stupid conclusions (the dad and Ayase, for example). That, and misunderstandings abound (another thing that I really hate about certain animes). Lastly is randomness, which is self-explanatory in itself. Too much random (a-la Haruhi) gets an anime on my hit-list, fast. Cowboy Bebop is phenomenal and endlessly entertaining. FLCL, however, is just on another level. In my humble opinion, FLCL is the greatest piece of popular fiction ever conceived. Yes. I love Cowboy Bebop. It's one of my classics. FLCL, on the other hand... I never really understood it, and I still don't.
staySICK
I need moar Strike Witches! Is this show that good? I've been tempted. Although I have really odd / easily entertained tastes in anime, so its probably a stupid question.
Enervation
I'm really ashamed to admit this, but... I actually started to watch an anime recently. The show is called "My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute" (Japanese call it Ore no Imouto or Oreimo for short). It is about a girl who is addicted to renai/bishoujo videogames. When her brother discovers some of her game collection, she ends up confiding in him about her secret "hobby", and starts to pressure him into buying restricted games for her. Basically, it is EXTREMELY shameful for any guy to be purchasing these types of games in Japan -- let alone a girl (because Japan is a sexist country and appearances are everything). But I digress... Anyways, I'm a bit of a renai game addict myself. I got into them around the Sega Saturn era with games like Sentimental Graffiti, Kakyuusei, and Sakura Wars (it is also one reason why I'm such a huge fan of the Mass Effect series). So, renai has always been like my own "big secret" as a gamer, and I can relate to a lot of the humor on the show. The characters are all endearing in their own ways as well, and I like how the brother is kind of an asshole. Ah, the (in)famous OreImo that I've been hearing so much about. Also, if it's an anime, someone will sub it eventually. Generally most subs are released a few days after they're aired in Japan. Some sites take advantage of "simulcasting", or subbing as the episode happens in Japan - like crunchyroll. Of course, high quality subbed episodes beat out that crap any time, anywhere. As for me, I haven't seen any anime recently. Go figure. Most of the hogwash I see nowadays on the upcoming anime lists are generally not to my liking or are full of the harem/kawaii-desu factor. Is this show that good? I've been tempted. Although I have really odd / easily entertained tastes in anime, so its probably a stupid question. In my opinion, yes. It is a very good anime, pantie shots aside. Very strong characterization, which is a pretty big rarity in most recent animes, and it has a lot of historical references as well. Pirandello
You ask a very good question but sadly... I don't have a concrete answer to it because I don't know. I think it been like a year since I watch anything but a few Ghibli movies. I actually gotten Panties and Stockings lined up... but never gotten around to it. I heard Panty and Stocking was pretty good for what it intended to portray. It's worth getting around. Anyways, in more recent terms, a majority of the animes that came out have been... pretty bad. It's like good animes are a precious commodity these days. Here's a list of them if you want to take a gander: Fall 2010 Anime Winter 2011 Anime The only ones I'm looking at right now are Infinite Stratos (misogyny is acting up), Gosick, and Freezing (though this one's starting off slow and is pretty much fanservice). I might also check out Fractale based upon its concept, as well. Is this show that good? I've been tempted. Although I have really odd / easily entertained tastes in anime, so its probably a stupid question. It is that good. Despite the amounts of fanservice, the story isn't that bad and it has great character development. EDIT: Oh, and I'm also looking to The World God Only Knows season 2 when it comes out. staySICK
The images and stuff I've seen are like they are based off WWII-era planes. Which I'm a huge fan of already. I want to get it at some point. I still need to order parts 2 and 3 of FMA:Brotherhood. and as far as anime I've watched, I've been wanting to rewatch He Is My Master again for some stupid reason. I wonder if I still have those...

Most of the hogwash I see nowadays on the upcoming anime lists are generally not to my liking or are full of the harem/kawaii-desu factor. Haha this is why I don't watch anime for the most part. This anime has a bit of that "kawaii desu" crap too, but it isn't too much to be unnerving, and I like the premise being about the renai game hobby from a girl's perspective. I used to like anime when I was a teenager, but those were the days of cyberpunk like Ghost in the Shell and quality stuff being brought over. These days, I agree that everything is for the most part "moe" fanservice crap. And none of that mainstream crap either. That's just as bad as the moe shit. I watch anime for the story. Quite shocking.
Enervation
And none of that mainstream crap either. That's just as bad as the moe shit. I watch anime for the story. Quite shocking. GITS was mainstream, but I didn't think the story was crap. I actually liked lots of the 80's/90's sci-fi anime, like Appleseed, because of their stories. I heard they made sequels recently, but I haven't seen them. I'm kind of scared to. Correction, then: RECENT mainstream animes are crap. I'm looking at you two in particular, Naruto and Bleach. Enervation
I still haven't seen a single episode of Naruto. I plan to keep it that way too. B) My cousins, as well as my friends, are absurdly obsessed with Naruto. Most of my friends are borderline weeaboo material, if it weren't for the fact that all of them are highly skilled in various martial arts, to the point of kicking my ass with them multiple times. And besides, Naruto's full of fillers. No one likes fillers, not even the fanboys.
docsfox
The problem now is I can hardly get myself to watch them. Someone give me a recent anime to watch from the last year. I don't think you guys want My Little Pony to somehow get me back into anime. --- Also, Spike has all the colors of the quotes. :0 Anime from 2010? First I'm going to say watch Kuragehime. just do it. But if you want something more violent look at High School of the Dead. And here are the other good shows that aired in 2010. K-ON! Oriemo Angel Beats Durarara!! The World Only God Knows MM! <--- (For stupid fun. The cotton candy of the year. ________________________________________________________________ I need moar Strike Witches! Is this show that good? I've been tempted. Even my boss, who doesn't like most anime, loves it. Hell, he's even the type of person who won't watch a movie or TV show if it's subtitled but he'll watch Naruto subs. TheForgetfulBrain
I watched about the first 100 episodes or so of Bleach and Naruto back when they were starting out. There were some truly great parts in those shows. Unfortunately, once the shows started to catch up with the manga, rather than taking a break, the studio (which animated both shows) opted to create filler, which was their own (HORRIBLE) storylines, and their animation got incredibly lazy. I remember taking a screenshot in disbelief one episode where they drew Naruto with four fingers. That was around the time I stopped watching. It sucks, because I loved watching those shows, but it just wasn't worth it anymore, and to catch up now would take me a few solid months. I suppose I could read the mangas, but I'm stubborn and would rather watch than read when it comes to Japanese series. I still need to finish FMA: Brotherhood. Was waiting on the last few episodes to release and got sidetracked. The only thing I know of that I'm really looking forward to right now is the new Berserk series. That is long overdue, after how the first series ended and was never picked up again.

The show literally leaves you with more questions than answers, especially in the last half of the series where it starts showing up en masse, and at the end when they don't even tell you jack-crap about what happens to everyone else save the main character and Tenshi. Everything else, though, is good. K-On has various mileage.
Mr W Phallus
I don't watch a whole lot of anime, mostly films, but I recently watched Here and There, Now and Then. It's depressing but I'd recommend it if you feel like watching something bleak but mature and touching. Seems like there's a bit of dislike for Naruto here but could someone tell me if it's worth watching the anime when I've already read (and enjoyed) the manga? TheForgetfulBrain
I would say that the first major arc, up to 52 or so is worth watching. Soon after that the production values take a nosedive and the filler comes in, which is blech.
Mal
Yeah, Naruto wasn't bad. It just all goes to hell once the Fourth died... And will do on those suggestions.

Mr W Phallus
You are talking about Now and Then, Here and There, yes? That's the one, the title is horrible and cumbersome and a nightmare to remember in the right order. Is it a literal translation of the Japanese title because the punctuation of the Japanese title doesn't seem to fit that?

Mr. GOH!
I am the only Japanese guy who isn't really into anime that I have ever heard of. I hear you. I was the only person out of about 30 in my first year college Japanese class who wasn't really into anime or manga. The prof (a middle aged Japanese woman) appreciated that. By the time I reached the fourth year class, none of the 5 students were really into anime or manga. These folks weren't in my first year class because I took fourth year Japanese in my third year; I spent my first college summer doing an intensive Japanese language and culture course that included the entire second year of Japanese language study. Enervation
I like anime, but it wouldn't be the reason that I'd be learning Japanese. I'm highly interested in learning multiple languages to expand my horizons. Also, I don't remember when I last saw Zoids... anywhere. God, it's been YEARS since I've seen any variation of that series lol.
Toshi
Since you're required to take 2 years of foreign language in high school in California, or maybe San Francisco at least, I took Japanese to get in touch with my roots. I feel I got a better sense of the Japanese culture, but I was somewhat lazy and am terrible with Kanji as I never really took the effort to learn them because I hated writing all the strokes. It's why I didn't take Chinese despite being part that as well, because there's so many characters with so many complex characters. Japanese is a fun and interesting language. I ended taking it for all four years and another in college. The only thing is I notice how many people are taking it simply because they are into anime. They're noticeable because they carry a Code Geass or Death Note bag with a Bleach sweater or something similar, and it feels strange having to converse with them at times. I envy you. Around when I was in high school, it was near the beginning of California's educational budget crisis. I already had a fascination with Japanese culture by then, but there weren't any language classes offered at my school. I think we would have had a Chinese teacher but the budget just didn't allow for it. They were already pink-slipping a lot of teachers and it just couldn't be done. In the end, it was either Spanish, German, or French. I took Spanish because my parents said it would "expand my horizons". I wanted to take German so I could have a cool language I could speak at home with my siblings (since I would teach it to them, too) that our parents wouldn't understand. Another nearby high school had Chinese and Japanese, and that was the newly-constructed one that the school district put a lot of time and money into as their pride and joy. And now I'm in college, as a CS major, so pretty much all of my time is spent on my required classes and breath courses so I literally have no time to take Japanese. I do have a friend at the dorm here who's self-teaching Japanese, so maybe I'll see if I can jump on the bandwagon with him. Toshi
it's relatively easy to pick up hirigana and katakana I think, but learning to converse and how to speak formally and informally in conversations might be a tad difficult on your own. Kanji I feel is doable as long as you practice them long enough, which I neglected to do.
