CorgiShinobi
Because there's a generational theme, you'll always want to start with Part 1. I mean, Part 3 does a good job of moving forward assuming you know two of the prominent characters, but otherwise it definitely made itself independent from the prior Parts. Diamond is Unbreakable doesn't nearly have the Stand of the Week formula as Stardust Crusaders does for its narrative. Stardust Crusaders is a quest through foreign lands and vastly strange enemies. Diamond is Unbreakable is a story of a small group of town residents defending their town from a lurking evil. It's one location, but the further focus on Stands and their Users makes it intriguing to how it affects a more typical setting.

Seriously, the premise you're describing sounds so much better to me. I'm usually not a fan of the episodic "____ of the week" format, it never fails to kill my interest in a show within a season or two. I vastly prefer a continuous narrative, where each episode leads directly into the next, like Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency did. I need that momentum to keep me watching, otherwise I tend to lose interest after a while. So, it really says a lot about how fucking good Stardust Crusaders actually is that any issues I had with the format vanished almost instantly. The amount of two-parters probably helped, though. Anyway, progress update Man, the encounter with the gambler was pretty fucking good, it might actually be my favorite so far. For a classic battle shonen, it's crazy how suspenseful it manages to be even without any combat whatsoever. Crunchyroll just uploaded the first 10 episodes of Dragon Ball Super but fuck it, at this point I'm just gonna stick with JoJo until I'm done with Stardust. It's getting way too good now that they're getting so close to Dio. Really getting hyped for that final confrontation!
Mister Jack
The first 27 episodes of Dragon Ball Super are actually not very good. They just rehash the Battle of Gods and Resurrection F movies by stretching them out way longer than they should be and derailing several characters in the process. There are a few standout moments and the show does thankfully get better once it starts doing original material, but I wouldn't expect much from the beginning. toxicitizen
Damn, I knew the series started out by rehashing those movies but 27 eps?! I didn't think it was that long, that's almost half the current run! Anyway, I actually held off on watching the movies pretty much for that reason. I figured it would be more fun watching the episodes if I hadn't already seen the movies (and if I somehow end up watching both, the movies would likely be easier to sit through afterwards than the other way around). I'm not going into Super with very high expectations but I fucking love Dragon Ball, so no amount of warnings will turn me off from watching it. It's the first manga I ever read back when I was a kid, so it has a very special place in my heart. I had the stupidest shit-eating grin on my face the entire time I was playing Xenoverse. I can't wait to get back to it and finish the story mode once I've watched the first two arcs of Super.
Mister Jack
I would recommend watching the movies at some point, even if you wait and watch the show first. On top of just being better, there are some pretty noticeable differences in characterization. This is primarily because the movies were primarily written by Akira Toriyama, whereas the tv show is written by another team that just uses his notes. toxicitizen
I was under the impression that Toriyama was acting as showrunner and main writer on Super. Is that not the case?
Mister Jack
I think he took a more active role later on because he wasn't happy with how the show was turning out. He definitely isn't the show runner, though. His role is pretty much designing the new characters and plotting out the story. I don't believe he writes the actual scripts himself. From the wiki: Akira Toriyama writes the plot outline, and then a team of writers creates the script, expanding, adding, and changing elements from Toriyama's plan as they deem appropriate.[8] The original suggestions for some of the storylines come from the editorial office, then Toriyama writes the outlines. [9] However, Toriyama has seemingly complained about the anime's quality at points Edited October 30, 2016 by Mister Jack

toxicitizen
I don't like JoJo anymore. Iggy edit: Now Kakyoin and Joseph, too! What the actual fucking shit?! Stop killing all the characters I like! Kill Polnareff instead! He sucks!! edit2: Lmao, sure, let's bring Joseph back from the dead. Why not. And, of course, Polnareff is the one non-Joestar that survives. Talk about twisting the knife in the wound... CorgiShinobi
Honestly, Avdol for real dying didn't hurt as much as it should have given that we thought he was already dead once. Iggy wouldn't have hurt if it wasn't for him ultimately cooperating and forming a bond with Polnareff. Otherwise it would have been another dog death from the hands of Araki. Kakyoin, for me, was sad because he was pretty much Jotaro's only peer and was a student who's young life ended too soon. His regret for not being with his family and the hardship his death would cause back home. However, before he died he figured out The World's power and helped the Joestars put an end to DIO. RIP, Proto-Neo-san. I liked Polnareff okay, but he was too hotheaded. Also, you have to admit his victory over Vanilla Ice was rather epic. How he disposes him with sunlight and the manly tears flow at the loss of Avdol and Iggy.
Mister Jack
Polnareff was worth it just for his toilet adventures. How many times has that guy ended up fighting for his life when he's in the bathroom? Even Avdol commented on it.Also, can we take a moment to appreciate that after being brought back from the dead, the first thing Joseph thought was "I have a golden opportunity to troll my grandson." Joseph is the best Joestar. Well, he's tied with Josuke, at least. I have trouble deciding between the two.

How he disposes him with sunlight and the manly tears flow at the loss of Avdol and Iggy. Agreed on most points. Avdol dying had its impact the first time, they don't get that a second time. Especially not after trolling us with it. Plus, it happened so suddenly that at first I figured he was probably still fine in that dude's mouth dimension and would come back after the fight somehow. When he didn't it was like okay, whatever. I wasn't hugely bummed out by Kakyoin's death but I liked the character, so I was sorry to see him go. And like you said, at least his death had a huge impact on the fight. I don't actually dislike Polnareff but he was my least favorite of the gang simply because he annoyed me a little bit. Too often I found myself going "this could've been easily avoided if Polnareff wasn't such a fucking dumbass..." Completely disagree about Iggy, though! I loved him from the very beginning, even when he was just being a dick and ignoring everyone. I would've been super sad to see him die even if he hadn't changed. I'm admittedly a bit of a dog person... Polnareff was worth it just for his toilet adventures. How many times has that guy ended up fighting for his life when he's in the bathroom? If anything, Stardust Crusaders made me like Joseph more than Battle Tendency ever did. Also, I couldn't help myself and watched the first two episodes of Diamond is Unbreakable. So, yeah, that pretty much answers my initial question. I mean, I can already tell. That shit is Persona 4. Even the OP seems to be acknowledging it lol. toxicitizen
Man, it's kinda hard to really get into Dragon Ball Super after Stardust Crusaders. I mean, it's Dragon Ball so I'm enjoying it but it feels like it's moving at a snail's pace. Took 4 fucking episodes before Beerus got anywhere near Earth. This is definitely a show to binge watch, I can't imagine watching that shit week to week without losing your mind over the lack of progress. Like, did I really need an entire episode about fucking Emperor Pilaf? No! No, I did not! edit: Well, at least it picked up pretty quickly after that. Ended up burning through the remaining episodes in a single sitting. Hopefully now the fight will live up to all that build up. Just gotta wait until saturday for the next 10 eps. toxicitizen
Okay, what's the deal with Crunchyroll constantly changing names in JoJo for no damn reason? It's getting kinda jarring when you can clearly hear them using english words but the subs say something else entirely. Like, I get it when it's probably legally iffy with blatantly borrowed stuff like a guy named Vanilla Ice and a Stand that I'm pretty sure was called Red Hot Chili Peppers (lol). But why is Josuke's Stand Shining Diamond in the subs when he clearly says Crazy Diamond? As far as I'm aware, it's not a reference to anything? Then the ep I'm currently watching had this, which is just ridiculous. I mean, it's right there on the fucking screen!
Mister Jack
Crazy Diamond is a reference to Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond." Changing the name for Surface is just dumb though, I agree. Surface is a reference too, but the word surface is so common that I really don't see why they had to change it. Same with Echoes. Sorry, "Reverb." Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
toxicitizen
Ah ok. But still, would just "Crazy Diamond" on its own really have been an issue? Kinda seems like overkill. Starting to see a pattern in the way Stands are named, though. Guess I should just get used to it lol.
CorgiShinobi
Going forward Users and Stands will be references to musicians/bands and songs. Most of the time there will be a different name in the subtitles, but ever now and then they can get away with the real name. Fans are use to this, especially if you played Eyes of Heaven. Sometimes the subtitled name will be hilarious, like a Stand in Part 6 is called Limp Bizkit, but is called Flaccid Pancake in the game. toxicitizen
Lol, that's just wrong on so many levels. Is that Araki dude on drugs or something?
CorgiShinobi
I believe whoever does the subtitling (and in the case of the games publishes) decides on a replacement name. I don't think he has any input on what's decided as his original work and the Japanese publications and games remain untouched. It's just when it goes outside of Japan that this censorship occurs.
toxicitizen
I said that because of the Limp Bizkit part. I wouldn't call it censorship, though. It's just the nature of localization. Sometimes you have to change something because a direct translation wouldn't make sense or there just isn't one. Sometimes it's for obvious legal reasons. Mister Jack
The best one is when they changed a stand called Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap into "Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price."
CorgiShinobi
As a heads up, FLD, don't look that one up. That Stand is an important one much later on in a Part that we're probably not going to get to until, like, the Year 2021. Well, unless you want to read the manga. I do believe it's referred to as D4C now, which I quite like as an alternative.
toxicitizen
I probably wasn't going to but thanks. I have to admit I was a little bit curious with such a ridiculous name lol. And, since we're on the topic of future parts, I was wondering about something. There's one game on PS3 and one on PS4, right? Would playing them spoil anything major? And if so, up to which part would I need to be to safely play them?
CorgiShinobi
For All-Star Battle, Part 7 For Eyes of Heaven, technically Part 8, but that Part is still ongoing and you're only introduced to two characters. Still, all I can really say is that Part 7 and Part 8 are "special" in Jojo. So point being, if you don't want to know anything about Part 5 - 8, you really can't play any of the games. I mean, just looking at the roster of characters would give you a big Part 5 spoiler and Part 6 would be confusing without context. EDIT: Actually, since you having finished Part 4 yet, looking at the roster would give you one hell of a big and confusing spoiler.
