In an unrelated note, Pop Team Epic recently started.  If you ever wondered what would happen if the Japanese made their own version of Robot Chicken, this is that show.

These clips are edited from their original versions, but I'd be lying if I said the unedited scenes made much more sense.

Fuck yeah! But why is it filed by the manga publisher and not the production company? Is that normal?

I have idea. To be honest, I'm just happy to see some kind of sign that it's maybe coming soon-ish. The wait has been painful. In the last couple months, I've been really tempted to do a Diamond rewatch lol.

Devilman Crybaby is weird. Quite ham fisted in what it wanted to say but I liked it enough. I felt that it didn't have enough budget and episode to fully tell the story since some stuff seems to come out from nowhere. I might give the manga a go sometime to get the whole story. A massive omnibus is going to be released sometime this year so I might get that.

Edit: Looking into it, this anime adaptation really compresses the manga down. All the major plot points are there. It's just arguable if it works. At least I felt a bit hurt towards the end so it had to done something right.

And if you like the director and his style, you can check out Kaiba. It's cute and all but my god...

Went to watch Fate/Stay Night Heaven's Feel tonight, holy shit, it was fucking awesome! \m/ \m/ :P Watching it in a movie theater, in a room full of people was an interesting experience, never thought I would see an anime movie that way, at least, not in this country. :P

Action is awesome, as expected of ufotable, and the story was well adapted, which is no small feat as it's the route many people were sure would be the hardest to adapt to a film/series/anything. :P Looking forward to part 2 Lost Butterfly! \m/ \m/ HELL YEAH :P  Though I will say that, unlike what some people, including the company that brought it over, were saying, I would say watching Unlimited Bladeworks in full first is heavily recommended, Heaven's Feel skips over a lot of the introductory stuff and some people may be left confused if they're not already familiar with the setting. :P

Have you guys been watching Junji Ito Collection? I know Ito is like this legendary horror mangaka but I'm not really all that familiar with his work. I read a little bit of Uzumaki years ago and it was pretty good but that's about it. So, I'm not entirely sure what to make of the anime. I mean, I'm enjoying the hell out of it but not exactly how I expected to.

So far, for every story that's genuinely creepy and cool there's like 2 that either feel like maybe they worked better as a manga or just make me laugh my ass off. Like, is this shit supposed to be funny? Because I'm kinda getting a b-movie vibe from the whole thing. More often than not, my reaction is "lmao wtf is this shit?". The Boy at the Crossroads is probably the only one so far that worked as horror for me as a whole. The Long Dreams one had a really cool premise but the dude's transformations just kept getting more ridiculous and hilarious. That was one instance where it seemed like it might have worked better as a manga.

Did I go into this with the wrong expectations (serious horror) or is it just a shit adaptation?

I haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but I'd bet anything that it probably just works better as a manga.  Not only are there fewer restrictions there, but the visuals can be as detailed as the artist wants to make them without having to worry much about things like an animation budget.  It also leaves more to your imagination when the gruesome scenes aren't playing out right in front of you.

Junji Ito's works is horror (existential horror?) but they are in many ways absurd (e.g., lmao wtf is this shit?). For example, Gyo and its sea life with robotic legs powered with farts. How about a person supporting a house with his body? A fault scarp with human shaped holes? And of course you got Uzumaki and its spirals. All of them are pretty out there and I do find myself laughing. Not to say that I don't get creep out. The way Junji Ito draws and pace his frames and pages is great.

Yeah, the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards his work simply being difficult to do justice to. Some of the visuals that made me laugh were absurd but it really feels like the intention is grotesque and unsettling vs laughing out loud. I really should get my hands on some of his stuff. I've been meaning to read Uzumaki properly and I've been super intrigued by Amigara Fault for a while.

It's definitively hard to adapt, the attention to detail (and all the little details) on the illustrations makes it almost impossible to accurately translate his stuff into animation. Though the horror aspects of it do nothing for me, I enjoy the illustrations/art quite a bit. :P

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z have always been big in both Central and South America. It's like everyone's childhood and Goku is the ultimate fighter. When I was young, myself and others were able to get along with some South American kids over Dragon Ball Z. They would tell us what's coming up in the series and discuss the fights we all had seen.

It was a big thing here, because they could not do it, apparently the people organizing it did not go through the proper channels, so Toei released a statement asking people to cancel those events. Then people tried to watch it on Crunchyroll, which could not handle the load and crashed. :P

I thought I would post about the FLCL episode since I got to watch it a few days ago through the DVR on PlayStation Vue. Though that has some issue which you can read up on in the PlayStation 4 thread.

So it's a bit bold of them to show the first episode of Season 3 rather than Season 2, though for the most part these seasons are meant to be self-contained. However, I thought there might be some character progression in terms of Haruko. That while FLCL was primarily about Naota and his development, Haruko was the Mary Poppins character. A prominent supporting character who gets the wheels turning for all of the crazy shenanigans. Granted Haruko is more so Chaotic Neutral and isn't thinking of Naota's best interest in her pursuit of Atomsk's N.O. power.

Still, it's a amazingly unique coming of age story, if not part slice of life since we're given context to those around Naota in his life. I bring this up because Alternative appears to be focusing on the slice of life aspect with coming of age as a looming undertone. Kana, a 17-year old high school girl, is the main character and she has a group of close female friends. They hang out a lot and do appear to enjoy their life. Yet, the undertone is that Kana won't be a young adult forever, but an actual adult very soon.

While the episode promises this potential, it's rather laid back compared to the OVA's first episode. Nothing is too crazy until the near end. This episode I believe is meant to setup Kana and her group of friends; to establish their friendship and how they appear on a surface level. I expect that for the rest of the episodes, we're going to explore each of these girls and how adulthood can sometimes mean going your separate ways, or just facing who you are and what you want to be for the rest of your life.

There are quite a bit of references to the OVA, which are neat, but don't try to directly tie themselves to Kana's story. Well, at least for now, but I don't expect anyone aside from Haruko to be a significant character in either Season 2 or 3. On Haruko, I was honestly surprised that when she was introduced, it was so casual. If you haven't seen it yet, it's so drastically opposite of her first appearance in the OVA. So again, maybe something does happen to Haruko in Season 2 (Progressive), but as far as we can tell she's still messing with N.O. power.

While we over in NA are getting it in chronological, I think Japan is getting Alternative first then Progressive. Or at least that is what I've heard.

As for Alternative episode itself, it is good. As an alternative (I really don't think this is set in the same universe) to the first series, season 3 has some parallels to it while being its own thing. Kana and the rest of the girls probably don't want to grow up while Naota wants to but was having issues.

For Haruko, there is no need for a big introduction for Haruko. We as the audience know who and how she is. Save the creative and actual budget to the later episodes.

As a side note, I was doodling with my FLCL and Gainax/Trigger references out when the episode dropped. I found that to be a funny coincidence.
