Sanrio is targeting bitter, jaded adults now.  Aggretsuko is such a wild departure from the normally cute and child-friendly Hello Kitty brand that it feels really bizarre.  I've watched a few episodes of this anime.  It's still cute but there's a lot of swearing in it and poor Retsuko's boss is a literal sexist pig.  I gotta admit, I kinda like this show.  I wanna root for Retsuko because god damn, her life sucks.

Anyone ever watch Interviews with Monster Girls?

I recently watched it after having some clips appear in my Recommended section of YouTube. I was rather hesitant to watch any because "Monster Girls" tends to be a ecchi trope in anime. However, the show is far from perverted and is instead wholesome and amazingly charming. It boils down to a show about a biology teacher trying to learn more about the lives of these "demi-humans" or "demis" as they like to be called. He's a straight up nice guy who looks out for his students and respects their personal boundaries.

These girls are also not supernatural in their "monster girl" aspect. Though it's hard to fully believe it's scientifically possible by mere biology, these girls have a genetic mutation. Being a vampire is more about having physical enhancements and handicaps to light and blood. A dullahan (think headless horseman) is essentially handicapped as they must carry their head and be careful not to suffer any head trauma. Again, these girls aren't undead, but living, breathing human beings. There's also an ice woman (Japanese folklore Yuki-onna) who has a lower body temp and under stress can make the atmosphere colder around herself.

And there's my favorite character who's a succubus, but not for the reason you think! Succubi are basically women who have strong pheromones that cause arousal to surrounding men. It can't be controlled at will however and efforts have to be made on the succubus' part to not become a public hazard. Something like living alone and far enough from others because even sleeping men can get, well, wet dreams if a succubus is near by. The one we watch believes she can't ever have love because any relationship she'd have would be "fake" since she has such a strong pull with any straight man. So she wears a tracksuit and continues her career as a high school math teacher, where eventually she meets the biology teacher and other demis.

There's only one season, but in October there will be a second and I'm looking forward to it. Again, it's a very charming and downright human anime that explores these girls' lives because even though it's unusual, it's also relatable to anyone who is different outside their circumstance.

Retsuko is freaking adorable. If this doesn't have a happy ending I'll be even more bitter and jaded.

It's time for more FLCL. No need for satellite or cable provider. This time it's Progressive for the next few months then we'll go back to Alternative. Let's all enjoy this two, not four, wheeled drive because so far it is not bad.

But you know what's bad? Me not getting a concert ticket to the above. Rant:

Spoiler

One thousand tickets and I didn't get one. What is this bullshit? Are there really that many The Pillow fans out here!? Not even some well known metal bands pull that numbers (Blind Guardian and Sabaton). If The Pillows don't do another tour I'll... my heart will break.

I thoroughly enjoyed FLCL Progressive Episode 1, a.k.a. RE: start

I don't think it's fair to compare it too much to the original. When people talk about feeling FLCL when they look at these new seasons, that's a difficult task in my mind. If all it was trying to do  was check the same check boxes as the original, then it would be condemning itself to being a mere imitation. Yes the manga panels are icon, but they don't have to be thematic. FLCL is now evolving into a series and I think the important aspect to that is how it addresses coming of age during adolescence.

Whether you're a kid first entering into it, finding your way through it, or needing to exit from it when the time comes...

That's FLCL

Progressive is a straight up sequel (a rather safe one) but it doesn't seem to have anything special animation wise going for it. While I think people are being way too harsh to it, I do think Progressive could use it's own "animation voice" (don't think simple Hitomi counts). I've seen it with the first episode of Alternative but not so with Progressive episode 1. With that said, I love the opening sequence, the ED and the imagery.

Edit: Kari Wahlgren is a joy.

Got caught back up with FLCL Progressive.

Episode 4 and 5 have picked up the pace from what feels like more somber episodes of 2 and 3. I know people have had issue with Freebie Honey and Stone Skipping, but I quite liked Stone Skipping. The second episode was too quiet either because the songs were quieter or at times there just wasn't a song to accompany the scene. Still, people need to stop comparing Progressive to the OVA at every moment. Hidomi and Ide are not Naota and their story being different from his is perfectly fine. It may be two middle schoolers crushing on each other, but you damn well ain't going to see this kind of love story anywhere else.

Especially after Fool on the Planet.

Also, Canti! And subsequently Canti-Dog!

My issue with Progressive is that there is too many pieces going on at once. Progressive has a different approach to it's story than FLCL which is fine, it is a direct sequel. However at the 5th episode point, FLCL already explained and grown a ton while Progressive has a lot to explain and explore in its last episode (Hitomi; Haruko; those other guys). I just don't think it can without being really ham fisted. I would love to be proven wrong though. That or there's a 4th season which I think gives Progressive a lot more breathing room. Hell, maybe Alternative does have more connections to FLCL and Progressive than is let on.

I think that's due to how Progressive is a planned 6 episode season whereas FLCL is an OVA that happened to be 6 episodes. FLCL was more about Naota than a cohesive plot about Atomsk, Haruko (Raharu), and Medical Mechanica. Progressive seems to want to answer those aspects, while also being its own story with Ide and Hidomi. I would definitely say it didn't effectively introduce who Eye Patch and Masuro are because either they're part of the Galactic Space Police Brotherhood or Bureau of Interstellar Immigration. I mean, given the secrecy it seems like the Brotherhood. Also, the Bureau wasn't interested in attacking Medical Mechanica, but the Brotherhood is in conflict with them and it stands to reason they would use N.O. too.

As is the case with pretty much every Aniplex release, they're a bit out of my budget, hopefully, Konnichiwa, the company that brought HF over here will also release it on blu-ray, so far, they have done so for all their movies so, fingers crossed. :P

JoJo premiere is out! That was pretty good, although getting only ~22mins a week is going to be pure torture.

Also, what the shit? The episode had neither an OP nor an ED! Hearing the opening theme and finding out what song they licensed for the credits were like half the reasons I was looking forward to the premiere!

edit: Oh and I guess MHA ended last week? TIme to start binging season 3!

The anime for Goblin Slayer just premiered.  Obviously it's toned down a little from the gore and nudity filled manga, but so far it seems like a decent adaptation, at least in the first episode.  A couple of bits from the manga chapter were cut, but these were unimportant flashback scenes so I honestly don't miss them.

Spoiler

No real need to give us the backstories of people who are going to die horribly in the first episode anyway.

I've been watching My Hero Academia, currently at the start of S2. Still not entirely sure what to make of it. I'm guessing S1, being nearly half the episode count of S2, was sort of a "tester" run as it did seem to take a while to get to 'interesting' things.

The powers, aside from Izukus/All-Might, are quite creative. It is a shame his power is sort of the usual superman powerset compared to like engine legs and earphone jack ears n what not.

A friend is recommending I check out "Overlord". Anyone else heard of it before, any thoughts?

@deanb I still wasn't completely sold on MHA after the first season. Season 2, although it feels a little disjointed due to how it's split up, is where it gets really good. And based on the first few eps, it seems S3 is only going to get better.

Oh and something I forgot to mention after the JoJo premiere:

Giorno being Dio's kid certainly threw me for a loop. Now I'm pretty curious about both the impact this might have down the road and the nature of future JoJos.

I'll have to break the news to my father that he'll have to watch Attack on Titan in subs. Granted, with how slow the English dub episodes have been coming out, he watched the subtitled ones.

Because of this I got an email saying I've received $20 VRV credit, so basically two free months. Given that I watch other "channels" on VRV aside from Crunchyroll, I'll still keep it.
