HotChops
I'm so friggin tired of getting screwed a few points here and there in my online BCIS course because of stupid little errors in the course. First, the lazy instructor never bothered to update her syllabus and course content so all the due dates are from the previous semester. I just took a chapter quiz that asked about something that is mentioned nowhere in the entire fucking book. I checked to see that I had the right version of the text, checked the glossary, and then every fucking word in the chapter. It's not fucking there. The same quiz also penalized me for a question that I know I answered correctly. I have the damn book right in front of me, and I'm checking it word-for-word. The textbook and the lab manual are the worst though -- absolutely riddled with typos, errors, switched signs and the like. The lab manual also requires students to use and download files from the companion site, but the site is a mess! The site lists the chaters by number, but the book does not. The filenames are all wrong and usually they don't match the image in the lab manual. I've missed problems in the assignments because the stupid instructions fucked up. And it seems like nobody has the balls to call the instructor out on these things because they're afraid she'll punish them with harsher grades. And guess what? I think they're right. Since the second week of class I seem to be getting graded extra harsh and I think it's because I've (politely and humbly) pointed out the errors. It's not like a make a discussion thread with the headline "THIS CLASS IS BULLSHIT!!!" I privately emailed her and put everything in the form of a question: "Do I have the wrong book?" (I know I have the right fucking book.) "Should I calculate the total net assets?" (I know I need to calculate the total fucking assets!) Oh it's no big deal, these grades only determine if I'm fully admitted into graduate school, which in turn determines if I ever get out of this miserable fucking rut of a life! whew. I feel better now.
SomTervo
Maybe tell a higher-up faculty member or Uni administration office? Sounds like something nobody should put up with. I know of staff who've gotten in trouble for less.
HotChops
Maybe tell a higher-up faculty member or Uni administration office? Sounds like something nobody should put up with. I know of staff who've gotten in trouble for less. A prudent suggestion, but word has it that the administration doesn't want to hear it. I go to a state college that prides itself on being cheap. So for example, the professors might choose a textbook/lab manual combo that is filled with errors because it's less expensive. Likewise, they don't exactly hire people based on merit, they hire them based on a balance of qualifications and salary. To make matters worse, the state of Texas is finally getting bitch-smacked by the recession, and the state is making major budget cuts to public institutions, so the administrators might not give a shit if the quality of the teaching and curriculum suffers. Lastly, my friend who graduated with a MS from the same business school encouraged me to NOT go to the administration because he said this is another "test" on the part of the graduate committee. The test being one that evaluates my ability to roll with the punches, deal with adversity and not complain. I'm not sure if he's full of shit or what... I do seem to be the only student complaining... then again, it's hard to tell when all your courses are online. I'm actually considering going to the professor AFTER my grade is posted and then: 1. giving her a sample of the massive list of errors that I struggled with and then... 2. Asking for a job as a class aide. I worked as a TA before, and I can guarantee her that I'll have most of her problems fixed or significantly mitigated within 10 working days. 「Advent Chaos」
If it makes you feel any better, I'm hating my online classes too, although they're not as bad as yours. Most likely because I'm taking basic stuff, but the way things are organized is redundant. I also had difficulty finding the right book.
