Demo Impressions

Mortal Kombat/Mortal Kombat 9

While they're officially just calling it MK, even the demo file calls it MK9. It's about 529MB so it's a decent filesize.

A few Notes: I played the game on the intermediate/normal mode. I can't quite remember what it's called. My wife tried beginner mode.

The demo has two stages and four characters.

Having played the demo mostly SP since for some reason my wife didn't want to play 2p last night, I can say that it definitely feels like old school MK and brought a smile to my face in that sense. However I also didn't feel the game to be as fast as it should be. There are 5 difficulty modes with easy and beginner being way too easy.

Out of the four characters I played Scorpion and Subzero seemed to be most fun. The two stages do have stage fatalities and each character has one fatality which is quite easy to pull off. No more retardedly huge combos like back in UMK3 (mind you I haven't played an MK game since MK4). Fatalities are more easier to pull off than a supers and ultras in SF4.

You do have a bar you build up to do the bone-breaking moves and that bar generally is harder to fill the lower your difficulty is. The game does do some interesting things like continuing your battle right after a round finishes with damage taken during round one visible in round 2 etc.

The game does feel easy though. You can play the entire game without pulling a bone-cruncher as well. It seems like the mini-games are all selectable from the options (unlike mk1) so you can pretty much try test your might right away instead of having it mid-battle.

Each ladder seems to be 10 battles though you can obviously only try 4.

The keys are mapped HP, SP, HK, SK block and throw. r2 and l2 give you the x-ray stuff. Finishing battles do seem to give you points which will unlock costumes.

It is obvious there will be dlc in the game in the form of character DLC. While 26 characters seem to show up for launch there's 2 slots marked dlc with arrows pointing downwards for further characters.

It is a fun game, but does feel slow to play the AI. As always it feels like a game you'll have to play with friends. Since there's no online play can't talk about netcode.

Stage fatalities look nice.

Motorstorm: Apocalypse:

Now this demo was quite a lot of fun. I've only seen options for a supercar or a superbike and you only have one demo track. but it's far more entertaining that split second ever was. The characters in the background don't just stay static they throw stuff at you like molotov cocktails, there are exploding segments, you can be crushed by them as you drive. The music's more DJ Shadow this time than Pendulum (which I feel is a good thing).

It seems like the festival event is going to be more focussed and the game does feel more like an action movie in some aspects. Split Second wasn't this fun which I can honestly say after trying that game. I do admit that there are times when it seems like there's a path but there isn't and lots of paths open up randomly due to the explosions as you drive (they close as well causing you to crash). I also felt the superbike was probably better in the AI and the game felt more like carmageddon than before.

I enjoyed the demo, but it is entirely a Motorstorm game. Feels a bit easier than PR. I mean with MS you either love it or hate it but it's always been a bit mental racing. I'll get it like I always do, some point down the line. Demo's universally available for EU PSN users and the file is about 1.2 GB.

Yakuza of the End:

Will post impressions tonight if anyone's interested.

Well since Excel asked I thought I'd post my Yakuza of the end impressions :)

You can get it off of the Japanese store. It weighs in roughly at 1.7GB (I think, downloaded it a few days ago).

The game starts off in Kamurocho and you get to play as Shun Akiyama. Typical Yakuza/Ryu beginning where you can go around and check out the stores. Buy ramen, gelato, sushi etc. Stuff happens. Zombie outbreak. Tutorial 1. Then a few more interesting sequences of tutorials after which you finally play for a while.

You have two levels for the game and two difficulties. It's not too difficult and it plays like Shaun of the Dead meets Yakuza. There are elements of RE3 and you'll see some of the enemy variants of L4D but it plays more like if someone made Shaun of the Dead into a game. It is funny and has some silly Zombie tropes such as a DVD store that sells all kinds of Guns. You do get an AI partner occasionally and they're good for crowd control. Some of the enemies that I came across besides the regular zombies were the boomer-lite, the witch and the tank. Though tank feels more like the nemesis clones from RE3 rather than tanks from L4D. There are quick-time events and the game is enjoyable. I did not like the camera but that's because I guess I didn't set the options and I had to keep fixing it as it kept going out of view.

There's a lot more humour in this game than the previous Yakuza installments (I've yet to try 4 fully so can't say about that. just tried the Japanese and English demos for that). Combat feels a lot more fluid, you do have guns but can also pick up weapons like always and attack. Your basic pistol has infinite ammo too.

The demo is quite meaty and the two levels can take you anything between 30mins to 1 hour. After you finish the demo you get a QR code which I didn't really check.

The story was entertaining however and it does seem as if only certain areas are infected and the infection progresses as the story progresses allowing you to see a before and after. There were loads of silly posters in the DVD shop including a Jeff Fahey (Lapidus from Lost, the villain from Machete or if you're old enough to remember - the lawnmower man) one called burning tower. The story seems to be far more humourous than a usual Yakuza game but it's only a demo and I can't vouch for the whole game. However I do realise that I want this game to come here as well :)

Cheers WTF! Traditional Yakuza controls I presume? Damn I love the sound of that game!

Yup traditional Yakuza controls. And you should try the demo if you can. It is fun :) My time assumption of 30 mins was if you skipped most of the cut-scenes. Otherwise it should take about an hour.
