TheMightyEthan
The speculation I read is that Conroy will be voicing Batman, but as like a voiceover; older Batman looking back on his past. The new guy will voice the younger Batman that you actually play.

The new guy will voice the younger Batman that you actually play. I'd be okay with that. It's still stupid because, honestly, how much can a man's voice really change? Certainly not to the point where he'd sound like a completely different person. But having Conroy involved in such a manner would at least bring some level of consistency. Unlike some other recent voice actor change...

toxicitizen
Confident it'll be a quality game but a few things still nag at me. The new voices, while not necessarily bad voices per se, sound wrong. At least after having heard them so briefly. Also, I've been thinking about it lately and is there any reason other than brand awareness to call it an Arkham game? I mean, Arkham Asylum, yes. That's an important element of Batman lore. Arkham City is simply expanding on that same concept. But Arkham Origins? What the fuck does that even mean? We know very little of the plot so far but it doesn't sound like it will have anything to do with Arkham. edit: youtube embed was broken, copyright claim. updated it. edit2: Jesus fucking christ, another copyright claim? What the fuck is wrong with these companies? "Oh, no, more people will see our marketing. We cannot possibly allow this!" For fuck's sake... Updated it again, this time from what looks to be the official Arkham City channel. Yet I still fucking expect it to somehow go down again. Because, hey, why the fuck not. Hot Heart
I see he's learned a grapple trick off of Just Cause 2's Rico. Looks good. Seems very action-packed even during supposedly stealthy-sections, but I'm cool with that. If they can successfully ramp up the stealth sections so they feel a little more fluid and Batman-like, that'd be great. Especially if they improve the walk/run animations... TheMightyEthan
Yeah, the Arkham thing is like how Activision insisted on calling Modern Warfare 2 "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2".
Hot Heart
Some gameplay from Arkham Origins http://youtu.be/u8_qXtlExIs - Grapnel boost was a new experimental thing in Arkham City...and it's here in a prequel. Obviously, that's fine though. The game needs it. - The city looks really good with taller buildings and with wider gaps between some of them. - New enemy type means counters don't actually counter, they just block and require a follow-up. Seemed to ruin the flow of combat, but that could've just been the player trying to make it obvious...or just being rubbish. - New crime scene detective thing seems alright - New gadget looks fun. Glad to hear that version's a little overpowered though. - And I have to say, the voices sound fine to me.
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I don't really care about the timeline of gadgets and stuff. I view it like a comic book, where pretty much every one is going to be set in the near future regardless of where they fall in the timeline. Hot Heart
Combat with the martial artists looked better in this little snippet, plus a titan-type enemy wearing armour. Edited June 15, 2013 by Hot Heart
TheMightyEthan
You know that guy's been playing too many video games when he calls a helicopter a "ship".
toxicitizen
Yeah, this is the main problem with going prequel. They can't really remove all the gameplay improvements AC brought to the table, so there's going to be some consistency issues. Also, I was kind of disappointed to find out that a big chunk of the game world is the same area as Arkham City, just before it went to shit (like, that flooded section won't be flooded and so on). The counters no longer being an attack is the weirdest thing I've heard so far, though. I thought the combat flow seemed weird in footage I was watching the other day, I guess that was the reason. I don't mind the combat requiring a higher skill-level (at least I assume the extra action needed will make it a bit harder) as long as it doesn't break the flow of it. Things just work so well as it is now, it's always dangerous to try and fix what isn't broken.
TheMightyEthan
The counter changes only apply to the one enemy type though right, not all enemies?
toxicitizen
Oh, that's possible. I haven't seen enough footage to notice if there's any difference between the different enemy types.
TheMightyEthan
I think it's just the ninjas; they counter you so you have to counter, and then counter their counter.
Hot Heart
Yeah, if you watch the video, the guy says that they're showing off a new enemy type 'the martial artist'. You can see how the counters don't attack but simply deflect, plus they can counter your attacks as well. Other combat works the same as before. toxicitizen
Uh, was looking for the Arkham Origins thread only to realize this had all happened in the Arkham City thread. I'm surprised Dean hasn't taken the mod axe to it yet. Anyway, been playing a bit and wrote first impressions in currently playing but I wanted to add a few things and didn't want to start spamming that thread. Looks like this game finally does boss fights right! I'm not spoilering since he was all over the marketing so this really isn't a spoiler. I fought Deathstroke last night and it was kind of awesome. It actually feels like a fight true to the combat mechanics rather than the usual gimmicky find-the-pattern nonsense. Color me impressed. It was actually damn fun. The new detective stuff is pretty sweet, too. It plays essentially the same as before (look around for clues and hold button to scan) but the crime reconstitutions look pretty awesome. Oh and, if anyone else runs into the same issue I did, I managed to fix the sluggish performance in cutscenes. Just gotta go in the BmEngine.ini file to disable DX11 and activate DX10. Locks you out of some advanced geometry and shadow settings but I'd rather that than the performance hit. Also, in the Steam game properties, set launch option "-nostartupmovies" without the quotes. I usually don't bother but holy shit there's a lot of splash screens when you fire up this game. Even worse than AC. TheMightyEthan
It's been the general Arkham thread for a while. I changed the name.
TheMightyEthan
Protip: for Shadow Vigilante Rank 5 it's not enough to get the multiplier above 12 and finish the fight without losing it, it has to be the red glowy multiplier (ie you haven't used any special takedowns). I was getting really frustrated because I kept doing what the description of the rank said, but it wasn't unlocking.
toxicitizen
Haven't paid much attention to those yet. I probably should. I did the same thing with Arkham City the first time around. I ignored all the combat-related Riddler challenges and only did them once I was done with the campaign, so I ended up missing out on some pretty useful moves. Like the batclaw slam :/ Also, I love how each encounter is ranked like in DmC or Bayonetta. Kinda motivates you to try and perform better. Hot Heart
Managed to play the first bit last night and things were running OK except for massive framerate drop during the QTE in the boss fight. which meant I failed it every time even though all I had to do was hammer one button. Today, it starts running like shit (cutscenes are fine though) and the 'DX11 Enchanced' graphics options that were there are now gone. I'm hoping I don't have to reinstall the graphics drivers every single time like I did with AC3, because now that takes 15 minutes for some reason, but that could be the case...
TheMightyEthan
Yeah, I was pissed, when I was installing the new drivers it took 20 fucking minutes. The first time I did the first boss fight it glitched out and he clipped out of the level. He came back but then he was flickering in and out of being visible, which made it really hard to dodge his attacks.
