Batman Arkham Blank

I'm going through slowly, mainly cause I'm always doing sidequests, always stopping to do all the riddler trophies, it says 17% so far of my total game progress :P

I've got to say, its such a great game! its so unashamedly 'gamey' yet it totally uses Batman properly. It doesn't stoop to other games this generation that try to make it like your watching a movie, taking most of your control away from you, it lets you do all the cool things while in control. Arkham City is such a detailed overworld and a joy to explore, just a triumph of solid design, not focused on cinematic set pieces in place of shoddy gameplay, just really solid.

So I finished the game earlier. Overall it's pretty damn amazing and definitely an improvement over Arkham Asylum.

That being said, I do have a few minor complaints.

- Arkham City itself turned out to not be that big once you really start exploring. There's a lot of hidden nooks and crannies, but in terms of territory it's not much bigger than Arkham Asylum.

- The story is, in my opinion, inferior to the original's. It doesn't feel as tight and well-crafted as the story of the first game That's still a minor complaint, though, because the gameplay is just so much fun. I always had more fun when I was just flying around and doing side-missions. In fact, sometimes I found that the pressure to continue the main story actually detracted from the overall experience.

- The Catwoman chapters feel like nothing more than glorified challenge rooms. Playing as Catwoman is actually fun. She controls well and there's actually some stuff to do if you just start exploring. But her main "missions" are really not that memorable.

So, yeah, one of the best games I've played this year so far but the side-stuff was actually more fun to me than the main story. Once I finished the game and got into free roam mode, I just started doing Riddler stuff and ended up playing for two more hours without even realizing it.

I am so getting the Nightwing pack!

I haven't really touched the challenge rooms yet, though. Only gave Robin a quick try to see how different he was.

edit: oh and I was working on the riddler stuff earlier and some of the radio chatter made me realize something. The game never answered the big question I had from the very start, which just cements me in my position that the story was fairly weak :(

They never explained how Hugo Strange managed to grab Bruce Wayne and throw him in Arkham City without any repercussions. If they did address it, I completely missed it :s Even with the final reveal that Strange was actually Ra's Al Ghul's puppet all along (which, for the record, I thought was a very cool twist and actually made sense as far as the concept of Arkham City goes), there is absolutely no logical way Strange could've gotten away with that unless it was done stealthily. And the Tyger operatives grabbed Bruce in the middle of a press conference...

I mean, it made for an amazing opening sequence. No argument there. But it does create a fairly large plot hole...

Then there's the part when he throws the fucking Mayor in there as well...

I'm def getting the Nightwing and Robin pack. The challenge mode seems great now. Much, much better than the original's. There are so many more layers to the combat, it's unreal; even more addictive trying to get the best scores.

I noticed that plot point too.

Really daft, but tbh the game doesn't explain anything that happens outside of Arkham City. I.e. it doesn't tell you how Strange got any of his political prisoners, so it's relatively fair that it's left unsaid.

New Game Plus seems brilliant. I actually feel more like the B-Man playing that than the regular story mode. The lack of attack warnings means it feels like you're actually standing on your own two feet in a fight. And the stealth bits are harder. Lord, are they harder.

It wasn't fully explained, but from conversations and radio signals, not to mention talking with Quincy Sharp it was pretty much revealed.in a simplistic yet satisfactory manner.

1. Quincy Sharp wanted to run for mayor

2.Hugo told him he had friends in high places who could back him financially, if he gave him the ability to do what he wanted in Arkham Asylum, and later gave him the power to run Arkham City.

3.When Quincy was made mayor, he gave Arkham City to Hugo Strange. Hugo at some point either bribed him or threatened him to give him enough power to capture anybody he saw as a threat to Arkham City and Gotham in general, no questions asked. Remember, Quincy didn't know he was evil but underhandedly gave him the power.

4. Hugo gets the power to arrest anybody he sees as a threat to the safety of Gotham. Bruce Wayne, not only a millionaire with enterprises in who knows what, but also running to take down Arkham City is giving a speech.

5. Threat recognized, Hugo brings him in as an excuse as he already knew Wayne was Batman and was working with Rhas Al Ghul. All he needed was a bullshit made up excuse to bring him in, he had the power hence all the freaking political prisoners who weren't supposed to be there. In a way, he was running a Nazi camp.

That's how he brought him in. And as for repercussions, did both of you miss

the dialogue or radio message or conversation that mentioned how Bruce's lawyers were going apeshit over such a travesty. And the police couldn't really do anything without causing some kind of bloodshed, and they were clearly underpowered compared to the guards of AC. This all took the course in one night remember? Bureaucratic shit takes days if not weeks, all the cops could do was sit outside the gates and hope for the best. which they did..

I got all the first spoiler tag there- most of the actual details are left unsaid and that's where the plot hole lay. But yeah, Hugo basically had way too much power, and that's it.

But on your second spoiler tag: good catch, I never heard that. But I'm far from done with the side missions, so will probably hear it soon.

Yeah, okay, I don't remember ever hearing that. Thanks.

Though the whole

Hugo Strange being given too much power doesn't work for me as an explanation. He's still nothing more than a prison warden. A warden is in charge of the prison and inmates in it. He doesn't have the authority to go around arresting people and throwing them in his jail. It just seems like Strange started doing shit that would've raised alarm flags in anyone with half a brain.

Ugh, seriously, I wish there were more Catwoman chapters or that the current chapters were extended. I frickin' love playing as her, but I literally spent 10 hours after the second (Poison Ivy) as Batman until I came back to her, which unless I spend more time backtracking to most of her Riddler trophies, will probably only last 20 minutes.

EDIT: Oh, and after saving Vicki Vale, the...

Mad Hatter Side Mission... I LOVED IT! Yeah, it's the shortest side mission, but the scene with the Mad Hatter and his tea party was really good. I don't know how to say this, but it really got to me on a "creepiness" level.

So, earlier I was collecting more Riddler stuff and I decided I was sick of aimlessly wandering around in hopes of stumbling on the next part of the Identity theft side-mission. It was the only side-mission I had left to complete and I wanted it over with so I looked it up online and went on with it. And it turned out to be quite the awesome coincidence because

the identity thief killer turns out to be Hush, and I just happened to read the entirety of Hush last night :o This is kind of awesome since had I finished the side-mission earlier, the impact of the reveal would've been greatly diminished. Also, even though while reading the comics I guessed the identity of Hush pretty early on, it still would've ruined the ending of the story arc.

The Mad Hatter bit was definitely great. (Don't think this is a spoiler as it's completely separate and unpredictable from the main storyline).

However,

the Mad Hatter Batman was definitely the creepiest thing about it. When you black out and the camera goes mental as Batman screams with effort to break the conditioning. Really intense and cinematically very clever. Awesome outfit, too.

Finished it this morning while I finished most of the side missions tonight. I was really kicking myself in the butt for not realizing I had to manually track Zsasz's phone calls the first two times because purposefully finding ringing phones was maddening! Not to mention the first non-story comment was ridiculously short.

Only need to do the Riddler stuff now, but I tell ya, having to destroy obstacles as Batman so then Catwoman can get her trophy is a bit lame.

This. Also, I was picking up riddler trophies last night and actually found a Batman one that, as far as I could tell, can only be reached by Catwoman.

I'm not against the whole online pass thing, but seriously, if you're going to use it for single-player content, then at the very fucking least don't use it for content necessary to get 100% completion on the base game.

The Catwoman chapters really don't add a whole lot to the story and can be skipped. Her trophies and content have their own progress section in the stats menu and don't affect Batman's completion %.

But Batman has trophies he can't fucking reach himself? That's bullshit.
