Secret of Mana.

You know considering RPG's tend to be dozens of hours long, and FPS games considerably less than that, is it just the make-up of forum members or is there something weird going on for us mostly having RPG's in our "played multiple times"

FPS's have no real replayability in my book. I haven't ever played one that was neat enough to be worth playing more than maybe twice. And then I usually just replay the cool bits because most don't feature much persistence from level to level.

Yeah, name five FPS games in the last like... 10 years worth playing more than once (MP ofc not included). The ones that come to mind are those that are FPS + different elements of other genres.

I've replayed numerous FPSs multiple times. Granted, after the third or fourth time I really burned out on them. Medal of Honor was my favorite to replay because contrary to what most people think, it had a good story with a very authentic presentation.

Ultimately, I don't see much difference between replaying the campaign of a FPS and replaying your standard JRPG: Hackneyed story segments separated by stretches of repetitive gameplay. In one, you're just aiming and shooting over and over again. In the other, you're selecting "attack" from a menu over and over again.

Granted, that's a general description, but it's just a matter of taste.

Orange Box?

Why would you play HL2 more than once, it's the same every time. And portal is... well, not a "real" FPS anyways.

@HotChops

Oh, i agree with the fact that most fps are replayable as the average JRPG. Or many rpg's for that matter.

Maybe it's just me, but i really really dislike replaying games that will end up the same no matter how many times i play them.

I'm not the biggest fan of HL2, but I played it more than once for the experience. The beginning is by far my favorite part. Yes, every time I play it I get flagged by the alien police. Yes, every time I get harassed by the cops and freed by Barney. Every time I replay the part against the striders there's a scripted part where they shoot out a chunk of building.

But those parts are really badass, so I've wanted to experience them more than once. I've seen Star Wars enough times to reproduce it if I had to, so why do I keep watching it? Because it's awesome.

I also prefer games that allow you to craft the narrative or ones that feature more random action (like GTA,) but I still enjoy the hell out of the games that don't.

Video games are heavily repetitive by their nature. I think if you're not prepared to deal with repetition, you're not getting the most out of your games.

Half Life 2 is one of the most replayable FPSs I can think of. The level design is so good that going from A to B feels like exploring, even after several playthroughs.

Uh... actually, I don't think that's true at all. HL2's design is pretty narrow. Did you ever play the original PC version of Far Cry? Now that's an example of a FPS with open level design.

Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST (not Reach yet, but I'm sure it will join once it's been out longer), Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Fallout 3, Star Wars: KotOR, Star Wars: KotOR II, Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mirror's Edge, Portal, Fable. I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of.

As for the "why so many RPGs" question, I think it's like what GOH! said: RPGs have replayability, most FPSs really don't.

I really feel like FPSs are getting unfair treatment here. For starters, why are we only considering the story mode in our evaluation of replayability?

A game is what it is. Some games are simple puzzles. RPGs offer a strong story-based experience. Modern FPSs are primarily designed for multiplayer. If we take into account their primary purpose, then FPSs like Battlefield, Call of Duty and Halo trump all other games' replayability because a lot of players have pumped hundreds of hours into those games.

But hey, I'm like most of you. I prefer strong stories and single-player experiences to competitive multiplayer games. I just think we're being a little unfair.

I know it's narrow, it just feels open. Normally when you play a shooter you head down a corridor, through a room, leave by the only exit, repeat. A corridor here could be a literal corridor or it could be a valley, a street with all its exits magically blocked by debris or whatever. You head down it because that is the only way to go. In HL2 you don't go the way you have to go, you go the way that looks/feels like the right way to go. In practice it amounts to the same thing, the other routes are almost always dead ends, but it is the illusion of choice that is crucial.

Cos if we used Multiplayer matches into counting for "games you've played more than 5 times" then the list for many of us will probably get considerably longer.

Well, had 20mins to kill before heading to class, so I figured I'd catch up on this thread.

I go through all the pages looking for all the days I missed and realize I'm a whole week behind!

So, yeah, gonna have to wait until after I get back. There's a few I'll have to think about.

Way behind & I'm not sure which day was which but -

Gameplay - As far as racers, Diddy Kong Racing of course.

Couple - Kyle Katarn & Jan Ors

Sad - End of Fallout 3, end of HL2 Episode 2, the lack of Episode 3

Soundtrack - Chrono Trigger

Replayability - The Half-Life series, I have played through the whole thing many times.

It's not "replayability" just games you've played 5 times or more.

Well yeh, but what is a game you've played 5 times if not replayable?

That's the point I'm trying to get at. Let's face it, this "30 Days of _____" has been adapted from a song/film model. Clearly, games don't exactly fit into the same mold.

If we define "played" as simply completing a single player or story mode from beginning to end, we neglect many valid exceptions and limit the entire range of responses to primarily one type of game.

I'm just getting at the fact it's not a "pick one game only" for this one. Unless that's the only game you've ever played multiple times of course.

@Hotchops: It just makes it shitloads easier to define it to campaign/story mode only than including multi-player, cos you can play through 5 MP matches in an hour.

I think multiplayer is qualitatively different from singleplayer campaigns. Singleplayer campaigns have a (more or less) defined progression with an "end", whereas with multiplayer it's always completely different all the time. With singleplayer games you're playing through the story again ("replaying"), but with multiplayer you're not playing again you're playing more. That's just in general, it's not all-encompassing (a notable exception being The Sims).

I think in terms of multiplayer the question would be which games have the most longevity, not which ones have you played more than 5 times.
