Gordon Freeman is a non-character...

My initial response to Day 2's question was Link.

Ultimately, I decided against it because I feel like Link is more of a foil to the setting and other characters around him. Really, what do we honestly know about Link's personality? The truth is that he doesn't really have one.

One of the few times he had a voice and a personality, he was an obnoxious douche.

Bad_Girl__NMH__portrait_01.jpg

Bad Girl. :flirty:

Her character design is flawless; over the course of a 2 minute cutscene she quickly embodies everything you could have possibly hated about high school through hyperbole and parody. Her actual boss fight is extremely tough too and full of cheap shots and one hit kills; and then at some points she's swatting guys in gimp suits at you. It's frustrating and hilarious and fun all at the same time. I've got an SD card with a No More Heroes save on it from right before you fight her. I keep it close to my heart.

Well excuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!

I would say Vagrant Story is more "unknown" than "underrated". People who do know about it usually speak of it highly.

As for underrated games...

Crysis was actually a remarkably open-ended shooter that let you tackle encounters in a great many different ways.

It got a lot of shit for being way too pretty though.

Nier was definitely underrated from a review point but was actually highly rated by those who played the game.

I think Battle-realms was possibly overlooked and underrated simply because it came out at the same time as Warcraft 3. it was a pretty good game though.

Sonic Colours was possibly overlooked, though reviewed better than average.

Deadly Premonition maybe? Folksoul/Folklore perhaps. I do feel that to an extent Saboteur was underrated or rather overlooked because of the flaws it had. It was good though.

I dunno there's so many but it depends on whether you mean underrated by reviewers or overlooked because of a glaring feature of the game?

That's a question you'll never get an answer to. On the old forum we had like a 40-page thread that was largely just arguing over what over-/underrated meant.

*Edit* - I'm gonna go with Halo 3: ODST, although really that's more polarizing than actually "underrated".

Gordon Freeman is a non-character...

You can often best see the character of a person by how he affects the world around him, and there is plenty evidence that Gordon measures up. I love playing through the Half-Life series and watching the legend around him grow bigger and bigger, hearing the rebels whisper to each other, "Hey, that's Gordon Freeman!" and the Vortigaunts singing his praises. Freeman has more character than many generic protagonists do, despite his never saying a word. Also, there's this:

I'd say FFXII, but that's changing. It was largely hated on upon launch (personally I really liked it) but I think it's only when the child of their hatred was spawned; FFXIII, that folks realised how nice FFXII actually was.

Though Crysis is pretty good choice too. It is true that pretty much all of the game is overlooked in favour of continually going on about it's looks. Which has meant that the sequel has no standards to live up to other than to maintain decent graphics. If folks harped on more about the multiplayer we might of still had vehicles this time around, and maps in MP might be a tad more open ended.

Day 3

Transformers: War for Cybertron

Far too many people overlooked this title on account of it being a licensed game, released mid-year, and another Transformers game amidst two unrelated and crappy Transformers games.

The game didn't just have a good single player and coop campaign, but I really feel like the competitive multiplayer was fun. I think a lot of people looked at it and figured it's just another competitive shooter, but the vehicle transformations, perks and special abilities really made it unique.

I would like to say Valkyria Chronicles, but at the same time that game has been receiving its fair share of sequels and an anime.

Viewtiful Joe is my choice! Sure, the series got a TV show as well, but I feel like Joe is headed towards the obscure spectrum of the gaming world. Two amazing games, a few spin-offs (...alright), and Clover Studios is dissolved by Capcom. The trilogy never was completed, and now Joe himself is reduced to a special guest in two fighting games.

At least Okami got a decent sequel after Clover Studios faded away...
