  1. So I bought Silent HIll 2. I've been curious about this classic for a long time and LOVED Shattered Memories. So I boot it up and... what the hell is this? Is this seriously how I'm expected to control this game?

It seems like a game that provides a better experience if you go in without expectations.

How are the controls set up?

You press forward on the analog stick to move in the direction your character is facing. Left and right rotate the character in those directions relative to his current orientation. Camera angles are all fixed, right analog does nothing.

    Wii U

I've got the $350 edition pre-ordered and paid off... I did that right away on the morning when pre-orders opened. Since that time, I have had an awful lot of second thoughts. I've never been an early adopter, why would I start now? Especially with the software price being $60, owning the console right away to play the games as they come out seems an extraordinarily expensive endeavor. So rather than follow through with a costly mistake, I think I'm gonna pick mine up and flip it online. I'll turn this money losing decision into a quick $100, or even more maybe!
  3. Bayonetta 2, Wii U exclusive, developed by Platinum games, published by Nintendo. WHAT?

How is it not a 'real' console. if something isn't real, it doesn't exist.

@Maritan. That's what the all said for Wii and 3DS. All Gimmicks and won't sell. Next thing you know, those consoles are dominating their generations.

Nintendo securing Monster Hunter already guaranteed that WiiU will sell well in Japan.

No, Excel and Yuki, it's a gimmicky system FOR KIDS!!

Nah, it was a smart move from Nintendo and showed they are at least a little serious about going after serious gamers. A few more titles like this, plus a trophy system, and Nintendo could be looking good, from a serious gaming perspective. As for hardware sales, I would be shocked if this thing didn't sell well.

  4. I am shocked. I did not think ANY N64 games were able to look good despite the hardware. It was just an ugly phase of technology. But no, I am proven wrong. Paper Mario is quite the looker, even now.

I want to say Kirby 64 Crystal Shards also holds up JUST OK, but I have a feeling I'm wrong.

5th Gen games with style have aged "better," but from our current perspective, they're very dated.

I was playing Banjo-Kazooie over the summer, and while I think it looks good for what it is, the size limitations themselves are a reminder of what use to amaze us.

A lot of them look decent I think, the cartoon style on them disguised how ugly they looked. Donkey Kong 64 still has a nice look to it.

      Yoshi's story is gorgeous still.

  5. In retrospect, I think that Square Enix deserves praise and accolades for resisting the temptation to turn Mr. Mew into a cute, helpful mascot character with a super annoying voice. You just know someone on the development team suggested it.
  6. I should never EVER go window shopping in Gamestop. There's always something that'll get me. Today it was Elite Beat Agents for $3.50

      Best $3.50 ever hey?

  7. New Super Mario Bros is a good game. Probably still at full price though. Super Mario 64 DS is not so good, be careful and avoid that one. The World Ends With You is a good game with some issues, but it's worth tracking down because of it's personality and uniqueness within the JRPG space that's so often stagnant. Advance Wars is a totally excellent game. Days of Ruin is more balanced and has online features (multiplayer and downloading community made maps (which are almost always excellent)). Dual Strike has more non-online content and is unbalanced in a way that can also be fun as long as you aren't taking it to seriously. Chrono Trigger DS is a good game if you've never played Chrono Trigger. I played it for the first time on the DS, so I can say that it's still a good game even without nostalgia. I'll second Excel's recommendation of the SMT games on the system. Be careful of Devil Survivor 2 though - it's harder than the already hard original and I didn't like the story nearly so much.
  8. It's interesting to me that Ace Attorney 5 is announced for release outside Japan while Ace Attorney vs. Layton still has not. The versus project has been in development for longer, is closer to release, and is for the same platform as AA 5. But no word on localization? It's a bad sign. Not a definite sign of doom, but not good. Not good at all.
  9. All right! News! Ace Attorney news! Ace Attorney vs. Professor Layton is still happening, and looks like it might release this year in Japan. After going dark for so long, I was kinda worried about the project. Also announced, Ace Attorney 5 is gonna be on the 3DS! Phoenix Wright is the main character again and it takes place 1 year after Apollo Justice. So to update my earlier post... "Ace Attorney 5 is a real thing that's happening. Hooray! What platform(s) is it for? Dunno! Will it be localized outside Japan? Dunno! BUT: This is a good first step." has now become "Ace Attorney 5 is a real thing that's happening. Hooray! It's for 3DS, but we don't know about localization outside of Japan. BUT: so far, so good. 10. Well once I figured out that the game isn't actually 3D, and is just a series of 2D rail lines through 3D environments, things clicked a lot better for me. It's just a 2D platformer, but without that constant struggle against gravity that defines the genre. What controller did you use? I played the whole game through with the Gamecube controller, and had zero issues with them. Wouldn't want to do the point and click interface at all, analog sticks are surely the way to go with this game.
  11. I bought NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams for $3. It's an interesting game. I think that the gameplay and music and art are all wonderful. The narrative does it's absolute best to ruin everything with long, excruciatingly bad and entirely unskippable cutscenes but if you can do something else while those are running (I used Advance Wars) and let the game speak for itself then it's quite the experience. It actually does capture a dreamy aesthetic which is pretty rare in video games. It's just about the right amount of hard, but the checkpoints are very few and far inbetween. Failure at any point usually means you need to redo the whole mission. But terrible narrative and inconsiderate checkpoints are worth putting up with to play the game. It's really not like anything else I've played. And for $3!
  12. You know what game was really fun but nobody seems to be talking about? Kid Icarus 3DS. That was a really good game. Great music :)

I got it last week! Absolutely love it, the dialogue never fails to bring a smile to my face, and the music is superb. The action is awesome too!

  13. The downside to Square Enix slowly layering the music on their teaser site is that now that I've heard the track without vocals I like it a lot better that way!

I've been saving the countdown songs from Day 5 and 4, but I can't seem to either find or remember how I did it. I need the 3 days left track! Also, "CALLING" in my "TWISTER"? what is this!?

I think the real question here is: what is the smell so awful that it broke even Batman's cool? He looks like he just got sprayed by a skunk
  16. Zelda Minish Cap is unique in my experience in that it's the only GBA game that designed it's soundtrack specifically for the GBA sound chip. It neither devolves to chiptunes, nor fails to emulate higher quality sounds (I love you fire emblem, but GBA orchestral is never a good call).

@Gerbil - as far as I could tell, it's identical to the original. Except that the 3DS D-pad isn't in a great place for extended playing, and I never liked the analog slider in used in place of a D pad.

I like the analog slider for Minish cap. It doesn't work great for some games but I've found that movement good for that 'un.

It is summer, and summer is the time for Gin and Tonic. I actually prefer it without lime (heresy, I know). I like them to be cold, be light on the gin, and not to have ice. If all those conditions are met and I can sip it during a warm/hot evening, it is a transcendent experience.
  18. Whoah, lots of video game news today! Sleeping Dogs looks cool, Papo and Yo looks cool, Darksiders 2 looks okay, and Remember Me looks way cool.

With me knowing Cantonese, Sleeping Dogs gets even better. Though got to admit that sometimes they sound weird.

  19. Finishing Mirror's Edge bums me out. It's not like the game was too short or anything, but the art and fiction is so compelling that I find myself desperately wanting more of the universe. :(

I feel the same way. The game's gameplay is great but I also found the world DICE created to be very compelling. If they ever make a sequel, I hope they don't move away from that tone and feel.

Also, I've been aching to replay the game for a while but last time I tried installing it (a few months ago) it just wouldn't work. The main menu was just incredibly choppy and I couldn't even load up a new game. Reinstalled it on Steam tonight and I've no idea why b...

  20. I didn't I'm afraid. And now that Rhythm Thief is out and getting pretty swell reviews, if I decide I need a rhythm fix I may go that direction instead. I would love to support the new IP over the Final Fantasy spinoff after all.
  21. I've actually had some crazy Lime flavored coffee from Thailand. It was surprisingly good. I think Citrus and Coffee can work. You've gotta combine the bitter of the coffee with the sour of the citrus. Kinda like a gin and tonic actually, except savory instead of sweet. So no, I don't see citrus honey working all that well. But citrus something else could work.
  22. Poll updated. Gotcha covered.
  23. If Excel_Excel (the fellow with the prosecutor Godot avatar picture) picks anything but black then I'm gonna be upset. This poll is public for a reason. We will judge you for incorrect thinking. And no, accusing people of incorrect thinking for their java preference has absolutely no Orwellian connotation. They're just wrong.
  24. I think it would be a great help to productive discussion if we began to recognize that a JRPG is not necessarily an anime RPG. Anime RPGs are kinda in a rut, but I feel like the wider genre of JRPG is much healthier.

    1. fuchikoma

      fuchikoma

I don't really play JRPGs (maybe technically if you count dungeon crawls like ClaDun x2) but compared to other genres they really seem willing to experiment with new rules and systems. In fact one reason I stay away is probably to avoid having to learn new, in-depth systems from scratch every time I get a game...

  25. I think the closest to what you're thinking of is the original Crackdown. In that game as your driving leveled up whatever car you stepped into would just transform into increasingly awesome cars to suit you. The cars didn't get too out there, but it was better than just jacking whatever minivan happened by like you do in most open world games. Jak 2 and 3 were open world games that let you tool around on various sorts of speeder and dune buggy that were sort of out there, but they weren't customizable like you said you wanted.
