  1. Guys, I've been trying to repress this bit of nerd scorn for a long time now but I just can't take it anymore: if you got into Game of Thrones because of the TV show you are and forever shall be a second class nerd citizen.

Meh. Even nerds have to fit into cliques now? What do they call people who do their own thing?

    3DS

Yeah, I'll agree with that. The 3D tech in the 3DS is completely useless. It has failed to significantly enhance my experiences with 3DS software and it has failed to create significant commercial appeal for the 3DS hardware. It also brings with it the downsides of increased productions costs for Nintendo and the technology only works in controlled environments for the end users. And it drains batteries like nobody's business. This was perhaps not Nintendo's best gamble.

Depends where it's bad. You could breathe some fog on the plug and plug it back in, or just twist it back and forth a few times. If the wire's broken, it's probably best to replace them - though if they're really expensive you CAN resplice it.

  4. Elder Scrolls Online huh? I think it makes sense. Things that MMOs do well are the same things Elder Scrolls does well. Their flaws are about the same too.

I imagine it won't play exactly the same. I can't see the clunky combat transferring to an MMO very well... LOL

The most interesting part of this might be that it'll be the entire country.

The least interesting... no sub-par console version! CURSES! Well, at least there'll be a Mac version, maybe I'll try that..... maybe.

  7. Ouch. What's interesting is that reviews have warned me that doing too many side quests can remove all challenge from the game. And now UA reports that if you don't keep pace with your sidequests you can end up in a tight spot with too few levels too. I guess that's going to be a problem in any game with a lot of side quests. If you design the challenge for completing none, then it's too easy for those who spend the extra time. If you design the challenge for side quest completers then you end up in UA's position and you get mad at the game because "If I need to do this content to progress, then why did you set it up as OPTIONAL content? Doesn't seem very optional to me!". I'm kinda putting words in UA's mouth here. Those are actually my words when I've run into similar issues in other RPGs. Can't speak to this game in particular. I guess a solution would be to make side quest rewards not level you up significantly, but that seems like a problem in itself. Not giving players a good reward for doing sidequests seems like a bad move too. I think that the best solution is to tie side quests to the story and give narrative rewards for side questing rather than experience/combat performance rewards. The World Ends With You did this pretty well. The people investing in the story are also probably the people who want to spend more time with the game so (in theory) I think this is a good solution. Any other ideas? And while we're on the topic, how did the endgame to Xenoblade pan out for others who have played the game? Did you show up too weak, too strong, or just about right?
  8. I just realized something... the gamecube controller isn't gonna be compatible with Smash Bros. Wii U. I'm not sure I can deal with this.

Honestly I even struggle with the Classic controller for smash bros. I guess I just need to put in the time and effort to learn a new control layout.

    4. Johnny

      Johnny

All the controller layouts apart from the gamecube controller are terrible for Smash Bros.

Then again, if Smash Bros. continues in this direction I see no reason to pay any attention to the next game anyway.

  9. Animal Crossing is the only video game I'm going to play for the next two weeks... maybe the next month. And I'm okay with that.

  10. Well, how about this to increase your faith in humanity today? http://www.capcom-unity.com/ask_capcom/go/thread/view/7371/29059615/I_just_spoke_to_Sven_on_the_phone_about_Ace_Attorney Some super-fan super-douche got to a Capcom higher up to badger him about Ace Attorney Investigations 2... by claiming to be from the Make a Wish Foundation. Truly, is nothing sacred to these people? I kinda hope this Capcom guy votes against localizing AAI 2 whenever it comes up from now on just out of spite. I sure would. God, being a marketing director for a company like Capcom and having to interact with video game fans from the internet would be the worst.
  11. If Link to the Past really is what they choose to build on/be inspired by, I hope they add some more direction to the game. Link to the Past just kind of dropped you in and left you to find the stuff you needed. Some old school gamers tend to like that, but I actively dislike it. I prefer to face a series of challenges in sequence set up such that they will teach me game mechanics and test me along a reasonable difficulty curve. Time spent just wandering around wondering "what on earth does the game want me to do to progress now?" is just empty game time I think. WHAT to do should not be in question, I far prefer Zelda now that the focus has shifted over to HOW to achieve a clear objective.
  12. I think it's interesting the idea the price of a product should be related to cost of creation. Movie ticket prices don't reflect the budget behind a film, nor do book prices reflect how long it took to write it. CowboyPoet, do you feel like these are things that should be changed? Do you feel like cost of creation really ought to be reflected in consumer price on the other end? If not, why do you feel like video games using less money on graphics should be sold at lower price? My bias here is probably pretty clear (I don't see what one cost has to do with the other) but I'm honestly curious about your answer. Don't read this as being overly hostile.
  13. I reckon that the 3DS will see an isometric Zelda game. There have been suggested rumblings that Nintendo wants to do something with multiple height tiers from an overhead perspective (like the Sand Temple in Spirit Tracks or Hyrule Castle in Link to the Past) with the 3D technology. I think that's a pretty logical, if not innovative, way to apply the 3D tech to the old Zelda franchise. The question though is if they'll do it with 2D graphics work, or 3D polygons. Zelda hasn't gone 2D for a new release in a long long time.
  14. Resident Evil 6 is getting a $1300 premium edition that comes with Leon Kennedy's new leather jacket... It's obscene, I love it. Anyone who buys this edition (I think it's Japan only) should be cast out from normal society. But for that same action, the purchaser should be elevated to the status of nerd god.
  15. This looks amazing! Pretty? Check! Interesting character/monster design? Check! Leon Kennedy? Check! Hammy as all hell? Double Check! This game is aiming to offer old school horror, new school action, single player, co-op, multiplayer (it's going to be a horde mode. It's too obvious for them to pass up). Co-op is local and online... Really I have trouble imagining anyone being unhappy with this game as of now. The only way I can see being dissatisfied with it is if A. You're a stick in the mud who wants RE to be just like pre-RE 4 (clunky and slow) B. You actually take the Resident Evil story seriously and are only now realizing how incredibly (wonderfully) hokey it all is.
  16. Okay, I just bought this game and am having difficulties with it. The game seems to default to a wide screen aspect ratio with no entry in the options menu to change that. I do not own a wide screen, I play on a screen that is 16 inches wide and 13 inches tall. The little black bars on top and bottom of the display wouldn't be a problem, but I'm finding the text in the game to be nigh impossible to read. There's quite a bit of text to read in this game. Is there a way to order a game to revert to a normal aspect ratio? I couldn't find anything in the instruction booklet.

    Wii U

Yep. The new rumors about Wii U graphics prowess are about what everyone should have expected. Low tech and cheap to produce. Why? Because Nintendo used that strategy with the Wii and DS and those consoles made them billions upon billions of dollars. There is clearly a large market that isn't bothered terribly if their machine is producing the most cutting edge visuals available on the market. Those people likely don't hang around on X-talk too much. I expect the reaction from individuals here to be overwhelmingly negative. What will be much more interesting is seeing how the overall market (read: everybody) reacts to the device and which parts of the market do/do not purchase it. Honestly if these rumors turn out to be unfounded and the Wii U is actually any kind of powerhouse or even competitive in the graphics game I would be shocked.
  18. There is no secret to it. What you do is you select the two personae in the fusion chamber over and over again, backing out each time the end product doesn't pick up the skills you want it to. What's tragic is when you've been selecting and going back for long enough that you go to autopilot and then suddenly the perfect persona build comes along but you cancel it away before your brain tells your fingers to stop

  23. Yes, absolutely. Blue shells are unfair. 100%. But that isn't a bad thing. There is a place in the world for video games that require very little investment and/or skill. Mario Kart is one such game. It really isn't that hard to get a handle on all the mechanics, and skill is not the ultimate determinant of victory. Mario Kart is very popular with people who are not video game enthusiasts. If Blue Shells and AI rubber banding and unfair item distribution were removed from Mario Kart it would be better only for certain audiences. For many Mario Kart players it would be less fun and less accessible. Mario Kart isn't unbalanced by accident. The games are actually very carefully balanced... or rather, the balances are very carefully measured and put out of alignment just so.
  24. I just finished Half Life 2 for the first time...suddenly I understand why people are SO DESPERATE to see more from the franchise. What the HELL is up with Gman? I'm so excited!

    Wii U

What console features do I need? I dunno... I guess I'm not too choosy. If it turns out multiple tablets can't be connected at once or extra tablets are prohibitively expensive then that could be a problem for me. I love me my local multiplayer. If Nintendo doesn't get that right then that's probably a deal breaker. What software do I need? I need something more than Mario. Mario is good. No, Mario is great. Mario platformers are consistently the best in class, Mario Sports manage to straddle the accessible/deep line brilliantly, Mario RPGs manage to keep thinking up awesome battle mechanics and are wonderfully tongue in cheek... but I want a game with some narrative on it. I want the Hero Journey across Hyrule, or perhaps an entry in the slowly expanding Metroid universe. I want an RPG from Mistwalker or from Monolith. Until the Wii U has a story to tell me then it probably doesn't need to be purchased.
