  1. I don't think so... I have a 3GS as well. The first one runs great most of the time, with a bit of (maybe intentional?) lag when you stun a guy. They say the second one also runs on a 3GS, but they strongly recommend iOS 5.
  2. Haven't played with the new update that much, but so far I haven't even been able to find a video ad in banner form... good, because I can't stand those... I'm not outraged, or thrilled by it yet. I'd like to be able to view my games not as huge chunky icons, but as a list - especially if I'm viewing them alphabetically anyway. Also, a few games don't have cover art, so I just get a tiny icon in a big frame. That said, it's about equivalent to how we do it on PS3, and likewise, it's about as fast if you hold down the direction and let it scroll. It's kind of dumb that you can view all your demos, but you can no longer filter to only see non-demos. I guess they want people to forget something is a demo, be disappointed, and buy it? I came into 360 around the 2nd last dashboard, so for me when I look at the functionality, it's always been pretty similar to the XMB, just "louder." (More big images and distractions.) I like the new placement of top-level headings - it makes it feel even more XMB to me, since I can now very quickly navigate anywhere with just directions. I haven't delved deep, but it seems there's less multi-level menu-diving now, which is good, because after some Marketplace sessions, I'd back out 3-4 or more times to get back home. The friends list inexplicably went the other way, so now I can kinda see it, but have to open friends, IN friends to really see them. Haven't read up on beacons, but if it is what I think, it actually seems like a pretty good idea. About the button swap - In the old menu, from your games list, Y meant "play" and A meant "select" (show details) ...but then on the home screen, Y meant "game details" and A was labelled "select" but actually starts the game instead of showing its details like it did in the other menu. I haven't scrutinized the new dashboard closely, but hopefully this change brings a little much-needed consistency to it.
  3. So, has anyone picked up IB 2 yet? I'm wondering if there's a grinding loop in this one too, like the spiral staircase they added to the first game? That was a handy way to gain XP and cash without levelling up the God King.
  4. I guess hypothetically it makes sense - if you like the game, you'll talk about it and promote it, as opposed to simply not being in the loop about it. I think calculating how much you help them would be as hard as calculating how much you may have lost to piracy though. Still, I'd accept that it's marginally better for them if you pirate it than ignore it... as they say, "no publicity is bad publicity." It's better to be liked and unsupported than to be totally irrelevant.
  5. If you've taken an arrow in the knee too many, then skip this track...
  6. Just take it as purely a statement of personal taste! When I listen to a lot of punk bands, it just feels to me like the singers try to deliberately bend their notes off key. It's probably just a clash of style vs taste since millions of others like it. (Still, I always check it out because there's some great stuff too!)
  7. I don't usually go for punk or ska but that was pretty catchy. More melodic than I usually hear in that range of styles. I hope this hasn't been posted - I'm getting really uncertain at this point and it's hard to search back if I don't select the exact same copy that was posted before... (you can forum search Youtube IDs like "1-J2p_cc2ow" even when they're embedded, but you can't search for the name of the band in the embedded video... and I can't see more than one page of search results! I looked myself up in this thread and got 4 results!)
  8. These aren't civil suits though - they're requests for settlements from one private party to another. If they actually sued the pirates, I'd imagine they'd go after a LOT more. This is possibly the most restraint I've ever seen in a piracy case, not counting companies like Mojang who just go *shrug* "It happens. I'd rather you paid us though..." Besides, I already made the case for recovering losses. So ignore the punitive element if you wish - but asking the game's price in settlement fees is about as useful as leaving your home's front door open with a note that says "please don't take anything. I'll be back in a couple hours." A red-hot poker... yes... because people who can buy current enough computers to run Witcher 2 and broadband to download it will surely be scarred for life paying about a grand for software they haven't paid anything for yet. I'd be upset if a suit like this caught me - but I can't make a case that I couldn't pay it, and I couldn't say I was just exercising my rights as a consumer, because I don't live in a place that assumes you have the right to take paid IP for free. It would probably cost me more to hire a lawyer, fight them in court, and probably lose. It may cost more even if I won. And when you consider what it cost to hire guys to track the downloads, draft notices and serve the ISP with them, and prepare for the odd legal battle, this may be as little as they could charge while still being profitable.
  9. I don't see how asking for €911 ($1219) for a single game is reasonable at all. Just because they won't get everyone doesn't suddenly make the remaining people responsible for extra damages. It's infinitely simple to avoid the fee though. Simply don't take their stuff without payment. While pirates are free to download what they wish, companies are free - or even obligated - to defend their product with what means they can. Also, what's the point in asking for retail price from pirates? So they can pirate all they like and if they happen to lose the enforcement lottery, they have to pay what they would have paid honestly? That doesn't make sense - then everyone may as well pirate first and just pay if they get caught. This amount is a punishment, but it's far more reasonable than recording or movie industry groups asking for $100,000+ from people and basically bankrupting them. This is like "HEY. You want to pirate our game? There are consequences - just like we said at the start." But again, their scattershot approach is the real problem. You never want to drag innocent bystanders into this. Not classy. Not cool. Even possibly a scam in itself. I don't think I'd be up in arms over it if it actually went exactly as planned.
  10. I'm not sure I'm really against it in concept... except the tactic as P4 said. They are probably coming at it from the goal of recouping piracy losses, and they can't catch every pirate, so they'd pull more than just the game cost from the ones they catch to try to get at least some of their projected losses back. I would imagine a loss like that could be afforded by almost any income bracket if they could pay it over time, but even someone who's pretty well off would hate to lose that amount. I've argued it is hard to prove the harm in piracy and that if it's not done as an alternative to purchasing, it is morally grey. I even considered downloading this one to see what it was like. Nonetheless, they seem to be playing by the rules, and a reasonable case can be made for what they're asking. Now, they're taking matters into their own hands to avoid a ton of legal fees, but I think the way they're approaching this could make them look like anything from thugs to scammers when they accuse the wrong people. I wonder if anyone will cave to the letter and pay to avoid trouble, not specifically knowing them, but having used BitTorrent before. No one's going to like your brand if you're those guys who go around trying to randomly intimidate people into paying them huge settlements. So they really need to be careful with who they go after, even if it means losing a few pirates.
  11. Pirates be on notice... Good Old Games is also CD Projekt.
  12. I'm trying not to say it, but it's almost unavoidable now... "I used to listen to music like you... then I took an arrow in the knee!"
  13. Now we know how he took that arrow to the knee...

  14. There's a petition to pardon Alan Turing for being gay after saving us in WWII. Little difference now, but I can see no reason not to grant it. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-16061279

The article said Gordon Brown issued an apology, but now they're seeking a pardon.

Yes, he issued an apology, which as far as I can tell is as good as it'll get this far down the road. A pardon wouldn't really do anything, but then if people are asking for it, I'd give it to them. Who would really slam him for that, after what Turing did for the whole Allied side?

Also, I could totally see a prog-rock group or something called "The Manchester Small-Scale Experimental Machine."

  15. Posting in the English thread, listening to music from England...
  16. Ah, cool. I know we have a lot of loanwords over here that may not have come back over, so I wasn't sure. I thought "corn chips" would sound a bit weird given the crisps/chips/fries shift. This is a great series of videos on English origins and mutations. I'm just hoping I haven't forgotten that it was already on here(?) This thread is getting massive!
  17. Updating PS3 AND 360 firmware tonight! Cross ALL the fingers!

Woo! 3DS update is here now.

Ok, 360 update has hit Canada... Wow! I have NEVER had three console updates in one day. Never even two, I think...

  18. Also if it hasn't been covered yet, crisps become potato chips and chips become "French fries." I'm betting that's common knowledge, at least on the British side. ...but what do you call nachos/corn chips?
  19. So over here, biscuits are crackers and cookies, and scones are biscuits... This is starting to remind me of the whole Street Fighter 2 Balrog/Vega/Bison thing!
  20. In my experience, a sweetened/candied biscuit is a cookie. A thin flour wafer flavoured with salt, cheese or spices is a cracker. A "biscuit" in Canada is often a kind of roll (I guess?), sort of like what you'd get if you made a dumpling recipe and then baked them instead of stewing. Typically leavened with baking powder.
  21. I've been playing Skyrim on PC without activation, but only thanks to the tireless efforts of a philanthropist group whose moniker includes a blade and a certain handgun... *cough*
  22. Alright! Rebuilt a broken gamepad and it's back in action! The cable broke and fried a port on my hub before... had to desolder it from the board and redo it because of how close it was though. Sony uses connectors - Logitech solders it right in!

Uh. I changed a hard drive once. And I didn't even shock myself doing it!

      Okay, yes I did.

Which Gamepad did you repair? I hate repairing corded controllers but sometimes it has to be done. I have a GCN controller with a frayed cord I repaired with electrical tape but I should replace the cord. Unfortunately the joysticks are a little loose now. :-/

Ah, the first one. I have a friend who got way into it, but the music on the PC-98 emulator makes my ears bleed. My crazy brain DB of characters, songs, levels and in-jokes pretty much starts at game 6, the first Windows one.

I love 10 and 11 because bombs consume firepower which is easily replaced, and if you lose all your lives, you continue as much as you want, from the start of the level.

I'm partial to the Voitex remixes, but I also don't mind the PC-98 games' music. I think the first one is the only game I've beaten, though. I'm horrible at bullethells.

I'm actually in the same boat... I really like them now, but until I tried Imperishable Night a couple years ago, I wasn't at all into 2D shoot 'em ups. I figured they'd be impossible, but they're easier for me because the bullets are highly visible. I'm still not great at them. Genetos is free, great for lower-skill players and still really fun.

  24. No surprise: they're going to look into it and do what they think is right, but will not discuss what happens. This is bizarre... I mean, the email wasn't for phishing, but that account name I was asked to reset should only be known to companies that run MMORPGs. Gravity, NCSoft, Blizzard, maybe Winch Gate, Turbine, or Perfect World Entertainment... I basically made it up for an account name that would not be a nickname, email address or anything else. But I can't imagine how any of these guys would benefit from sowing confusion among Steam users, especially not knowing whether I had an account with Steam... Whoever sent me the password reset request knew my real name though, and I always keep that private unless it's required.
  25. The second rep actually solved it in a day where the first one took a week to tell me I was out of luck. (Glad I didn't go to Reddit now!) It turns out the account name was wrong - but that leaves the mystery of how I received a password reset mail from them with my real name on it, for an account name that I made to play MMOs with... Of course I thought it could be a phishing attack, but all links pointed to the real Steam servers (https://support.steampowered.com/) and as far as I can tell, my account does not use this name as a nickname. I usually only use steam every several months, so it seemed totally plausible that an account name I've used for other gaming accounts was the one I'd used on Steam if Valve says it is. Now I'm waiting to see if they have any suggestions how it happened. But anyway, the exchange (one response from them per day) basically went: (Ticket: Password recovery) Me: I was sent a password reset email for this account, and now I can't get any more to come in. Can you help me get back in? Support Tech S: Sure, send me your CD key or billing info. M: Here it is. S: Also send some more info I didn't ask about. M: Ok... here it is... S: Something mismatched. M: Ok, well I bought it a while ago. Here's the expiry date of my older credit card, even though you shouldn't count on people having that... S: Mismatch. M: Here is all of my billing info. It would never have changed and is the only info I've ever had on file here. S: Name, email, and billing info mismatched. M: Wow. I just got everything on my account jacked. You just lost a customer. S: Yep. Tough luck. Have a nice day. (New ticket: Account hijack) M: I just got my account hijacked. Here is all of my billing and contact info. Support tech W: That doesn't look like your account - you'll want to try this one, or this other one. M: Thank you! So, any idea why I got that first email for an account I don't own then?
