Nothin wrong with jailbait as long as it's imaginary jailbait. ;-)

Also, AFAIK (not researched it) the most common age of consent is 16, so as long as they're 16 they're not jailbait anymore.

    3. WTF

      WTF

If memory serves me right, 13 is the age of consent in Japan while 16 in most nations across the world and in a fair few it's 18/21.

Guys... I just couldn't pass up the opportunity for a "jailbait" joke for this game!

I think Japan might have some kind of prefectural variation in addition to the absolute national minimum, but I really don't know since it's never been part of my plans! (haha... erm... *cough*)

  2. Another undocumented feature - you can set a transparent .PNG file as the background image for any screen of icons. I just carved one out quickly to try it and it worked right away at 960x544. Not sure how it handles non-native resolution pics, but it seems there's no real trick to it. You just change the background to one of the available animated colour sets, then change it to a picture and you'll have both.
  3. So apparently there's a menu you can access by holding the PS button. That's handy since I've been running back to display settings every time.
  4. Hey, at least it wasn't another story about someone who got killed over a game console. In that regard, it may be an improvement for Kotaku since it's not painting gamers as killers...
  5. The physical manual covers: Inserting cards Turning it on Touching the screen (yes: how to drag, tap and flick...) Initial setup that you can't skip anyway Interface elements Starting, pausing and quitting software Power, standby and charging It says nothing about USB charging (how fast it goes, charge indicators, USB port amperage needed to charge, why you'd ever turn off the feature, etc) Loading media files onto the device Backing up data What media formats are supported Using the camera or AR cards Tech specs OLED screen burn-in precautions Best practices for recharging Everything else

  7. lol... That reminds me of a song I found around a decade ago. Not sure where it's from. No nudity, but the video is moderately NSFW - I wouldn't show it to coworkers for instance.
  8. The first time, it took about 45 minutes to an hour. Connected, installed new firmware, got prompted for PSN, tried about 20 passwords trying to get in (my PS3 remembers it, so I don't...) Then once I got signed in, I tried dragging files onto the Vita listed in "My Computer" but got a cryptic error message when I tried, so I looked up the error, re-read the getting started guide that came with it, looked for a manual, then looked for a manual on the device, wasted time in "Welcome Park" looking for a help system, then looked on the web for documentation, then finally found the instructions in the online help for Content Manager. Now that I know they do it backwards from any other portable device though, it's inconvenient, but easy.
  9. The pixels are a square grid of vertical sets of three bars in a square aspect ratio. It may be SAMOLED+ - it seems as if the touch sensor is one with the display: the protective screen over top isn't very thick or far from the display surface, so I'm pretty certain there's no separate digitizer layer on top. I also forget when I saw it, but it seems there are little square groups around 1cm or less visible on the screen under certain conditions, though I'm not sure what that's indicative of. I'm a little paranoid now because I'm reading today that lots of OLED devices have severe problems with screen burn-in. Lots of Nexus and Galaxy users complaining about it now that I look... This thing does have bright, fixed display elements that can't be moved, but it does also explain why the status bar at the top is slightly dim. Hopefully it doesn't become an issue later on. Still, I'm being critical because it's a new thing - overall it's great. Entertainment on day one, as opposed to my 3DS which had some novelty factor but IMO is only starting to get ok as a game system.
  10. MasterDex, it comes with Remoteplay installed, so whatever PS3 games can support it should work fine. I was never much fan of it myself, but I have dabbled a bit with the PSP. IMO it's best for streaming videos. Thanks, WTF. I got some demos loaded on, and the NicoNico app even works in my main account. Minna to Issho failed though, being a more PSN-centric app... it even wiped the icon and info screen blank when I tried to update it! I'd heard both that the memory cards would only work with one account and that the account was tied to the card and the system, but with this it really seems it's only to the system and maybe each app. I've noticed something interesting on my screen... When the system is displaying black, or almost-black, I see a faint blob of darker pixels always in the same place and shape, with smaller spots across the screen. It's completely unnoticeable when displaying other graphics - at first I thought it was like the HDMI ghosting I've seen with the PS3, but it actually seems to be inherent to the screen itself. Has anyone else seen something like this? I'd say it's far from defective, it's just... odd.
  11. WTF - This is true. Actually, I've trivially transferred a demo from PS3 to Vita now without even doing any real "setup." I've tried time after time after time to get demos from PS3 to PSP, but they never started for me, even after reauthorizing the PSP. Also, any sharing between English and Japanese accounts had to be done separately per memory card. Sadly, for a "region free" system, I still cannot load apps from my Japanese account, even from my English account. I'm not even allowed to log into my Japanese account from it, so it's actually region-semi-restricted and the 6 demos/apps I have on JPSN are locked out while there's only one on the English service I plan to fire up, try, and throw away... but I've read conflicting reports that the system is locked to the account or the card is locked to it. Hopefully it's just the card - that'd be fine. Yantelope - Definitely. I can understand a lot of their reasoning - for instance, I have no problem with the memory card issue. Not being able to copy MP3s, pictures and movies without PSN seems overboard though, much less not being able to transfer any content at all without updating the firmware. I guess it does have the intended effect though - I don't really plan to jailbreak it because it'd be a massive pain hiding from them, risking my PSN account, and getting stuck at too old a firmware to play newer games...
  12. Well... I have to say it's a load of BS that you have to sign into PSN in order to connect the Vita to your PC via a cable. It's an unrelated arbitrary requirement that stinks of Big Brother... I'm not loading PSN content - I'm loading MP4s I encoded myself! But it absolutely refuses to progress until installing the desktop app, updating the firmware and validating a sign-in with them. Dammit, Sony... putting your customers in shackles is not how to make a good first impression.
  13. For running and gunning, I had a lot of run in GTA4 - normally I'm bored to death of 3D shooting combat, but I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out to me that most GTA4 missions were combat-based - I was having so much fun regardless. LA Noire's running and gunning... I'd call it serviceable. Then, I didn't play very far into it yet because to me the facial expressions still look really unnatural so it always seems like people are lying because they look like they're acting. I can't quite reverse-engineer the game enough to figure out when it's trying to tell me they're lying and when it's trying to tell me they're telling the truth.
  14. It's funny Bioware should mention that. Normally I'd think that removing combat would... take the game out of the game. I'd make one exception though. If I could, I'd skip it in Mass Effect or mod it to be some kind of turn-based JRPG like system. I really wanted to try out Bioware's famous dialog trees and roleplay elements and the series sounded fascinating from all the people raving about it. Once I started into it, I did a bit of combat, realized there would be a lot more where that came from and stopped playing. That half of the game just isn't a game I want to play. It's a shame I'll also miss out on the rest of it, but to me it's not worth slogging through one to get to the other.

but I was reading that it possibly won't have it's original soundtrack (none of segas other rereleases have) but it was supposed to be one of the highlights. fingers crossed!

      fuchikoma

Well, on a 360 you should at least be able to add the soundtrack back to it... I can imagine this game would be a nightmare to relicense all the tracks for it.

    4. TheFlyingGerbil

      TheFlyingGerbil

yeah - apparently song licensing is why I'm never going to be able to buy a Daria DVD boxset.

  15. Cool... How'd you manage to take a screenshot of the message that says you can't take a screenshot? Don't tell me it layers on top of the window and you can snap one as long as the error is showing?
  16. That's more about the game cartridges, but I'm sure the memory cards are likewise - it sounds like you have to manage them through the machine and not just any memory card reader. I'm guessing there may be some kind of signing going on when you load games onto it that can't be found in the regular files the user could access or something like that. Cartridges also let them employ much more sophisticated tech, not that I've ever seen it in a home system. With a PSP (or Dreamcast or Gamecube) once you get homebrew on it, it's a small step to make a disc reader that streams the disc to memory or over a communications port. A smart cartridge hypothetically, even if the Vita is totally cracked, might watch its I/O and go "hey! I'm being read sequentially from start to finish!" and send garbage data or reset itself, or even blow an internal fuse/resistor, bricking the cart. All speculation whether or not they will though since I've only seen madness like that in arcade boards.
  17. In North America they're usually maybe a centimeter? There are certainly thicker though.
  18. Hm... I didn't see such a problem with people downvoting and not replying, but of course I don't have a log of every action on here. It seemed way better than say, Reddit, where if you can't bring a convincing counterpoint you just hit and run. Personally, I feel that if your rep can only go up, it's not really meaningful anymore - before, your average could move up and down and overall you'd see how well received a person was on here. Now it's more like Gamerscore where it's a mix of how popular you are, how much you post and how long you've been here - you could be way ahead just because your account is older. You could also just spam all sorts of stuff all day and over time, your score would climb even if you really irritated people other times. I also kind of admired posters like FDS who had a significant negative score, but since it's just a number, they kept speaking their minds and aren't auto-hidden or anything. Also, I kind of liked voting for the sake of the post's content, not to stamp my name on it for everyone to see that I approved. It looks like I'm in the minority... but you can't downvote me now! hah!
  19. Preordered a Vita... should receive a memory card, game and screen protector any day now. Too bad none of those work without the system.

Wipeout 2048. I've been a Wipeout fan since the demo disc that came with the PSX (though not 3 through Pure...) I've heard the load times are savage, but I've gotta try it anyway. Also looking forward to Gravity Rush, but I'll take it on a cartridge when it comes out...

I'm also pumped that 5 artists from the Wipeout 2097/XL soundtrack will be on it. That series always had great tunes.

  20. That would be great. Even in Canada, a lot of my college books were on American-like price schedules (but marked up because our currency was lower than USD and it takes forever for book prices to normalize) I even had books I couldn't sell back the next term because a new edition had come out... of a book about writing business memos, letters and other basic communication! Other times, the books would be required for a few assignments early on and then completely go by the wayside. Basically, books are second tuition, which looking back a few decades I guess means that in 2030 a term's worth of textbooks will cost the equivalent of $5000...

I've missed a few - probably this one too. Still, it's an interesting idea. Kind of like some of the 24 hour coding contests. I'm only peeking in once in a while though because I've written software and know that 90% of it is soul-crushing boredom or soul-crushing confusion, haha

Yeah as far as the product of stuff like LD 48hr goes this one isn't worth paying for. Notchs products of those aren't exactly compelling games. Maybe with a full team it might improve, but I'm doubting.
