Oooh this is rare, I think I've made like 3 threads here. Anywho Miyamoto is stepping down from his current position. Seems he wants to move from a less managerial type role to get back into the nitty-gritty game design. Could be interesting, he hasn't been a small time guy in Nintendo since..well almost forever. He's nearly 60 mind, I wouldn't be surprised if this is him winding down towards completely retiring from Nintendo. Maybe it's a developers mid-life crisis? Working on Marios and Zeldas n such for so long he's just gotten burnt out. Probably something a lot of devs could do with doing now n then.

Takes a lot of guts to willingly step down from that sort of position. It'll be interesting to see him actually developing once more.

The article doesn't say he's retiring either. Miyamoto said he is telling the developers working under him that he's retiring to face the stark reality that one day he won't be there to hand hold them along. What he is doing is stepping down, so he'll still be working for Nintendo, just not heading huge departments and running big games. It's something that happens in tech companies now n then. For example Wozniak was one of the founders of Apple, he went back to an engineering post within the company. Considering Miyamoto has stated many times he never wanted to be a game developer in the first place anyway (he wanted to be an artist), so it's little surprise he wants a break after working on big games for several decades.

One thing I will note is that this news seems to have sparked twitter into discussing what'll happen after his death. Mostly tongue in cheek, but with jobs recent death I guess it is the topic of debate since Miyamoto holds a similar role within Nintendo.
